We currently have 4 players in Toyota cup from the WA reds sg ball set up. Will be interesting to see if any of them become stars if they change the eligibility criteria.

1997 it outdrew nrl origin, the series was last played in 99.prior to 97 it was easily getting 40,000 crowds with standouts of 91,000 and 65,000.

did you even look at the wikipedia link posted ?
crowds as low as 10. 12... & 13K
half of all crowds for AR SOO from 1977 would be of been below 30K

there hasn't been an origin game not sold out in Brisbane since 2000
there would have been games .. deciders & the like up there ... that would have sold 80 or 90K ... hell maybe more ...if they had a venue that held that many
and the average crowd in Sydney for SOO since 1999 .. is 74,000
nuh
your claim that the crowds are on par.... has also been exposed as a bit off the mark too;-)

1997 was the Super League year.

There were two "parallel" Origin series run that year the SL Tri-Series and the ARL's Origin series, the latter was initially considered to be dud due to QLD lacking any quality players.

I guarantee you that the combined crowd for both series was WAY bigger than 40,000.

You have no grasp of the history for anything that isn't AFL related.

What sites are you getting your crowds figures from. Just going on the link that Elbusto provided, in 1997 the NRL SOO average 28,856 for 3 games while the AFL version averaged 28,695 for 2 games.
Apart from the very early series in the 80's AFL SOO didnt pull crowds of more tham 16,00 outside of Melb.

My question I wanna ask you is: what would wanna compel 360k+ Melbournians to tune into our great spectacle?

Promotion, cultural influence and the simple fact that year in year out it is the biggest, strongest and hardest sporting series in Australia. I’d even go further and suggest that it feeds into the archetypes of the collective unconscious, just look at their jerseys…

However to suggest that enjoyment of State of Origin is somehow extrinsic to enjoyment of rugby league is pure idiocy. When you cheer the try, you are cheering a RUGBY LEAGUE try. When you cheer the team, you are cheering a RUGBY LEAGUE team. To suggest otherwise is just pissing in the wind.

The AFL fans advocating for a return of rep football are right to feel jealous. It's something their sport will never know again in any meaningful way.

Is it any wonder when you have commentators suggesting winning a meaningless club game against a winless expansion side is better than playing for your country.

The AFL Grand Final might well mean nothing in the whole scheme of things. The only time the AFL gets more than one of these types of contests is when they have a replayed GF!

If it had nothing to do with RL then AFL could do it with NSW and QLD and get the same success. And with all the revenue and awareness origin generates they would be foolish not to...if it had nothing to do with RL.

i'm surprised Cricket Australia hasn't sold the rights to NSW V QLD to FTA TV in sheffield shield

would get 4 million viewers each day using bigpoofy logic

Geez Ch9 are plugging that they are the home of rugby league. That advert is on frequently.

The advert is the biggest suck up to the NRL. I really hope 1 game goes to CH10 preferably a Saturday evening or a Sunday evening game.
