Let's say Nine offered $350 - $400m for 4 games, what are games 5,6,7, and 8 (or even 9) worth?

I still think $750m-$850m for 8/9 games on free to air TV would be massive. RL would swamp the sponsors market and destroy pay TV. No more 250k ratings for Fox games, we would be 600k-1.2m for every one.... Surely they (ARLC) are looking at this scenario... Contra across two FTA channels too promoting games and promoting backyard league etc....

Just another thing, what were fox thinking paying $600m for AFL? How do you grow subscriptions in Perth and Adelaide when the local teams are always on FTA?? Makes no sense.... geniuss!

Does anyone know what the AFL numbers have been like on Fox. Has the Fox Footy channel been a success to date. The fact that the games are shown FTA in there main AFl market place, effected there up take of Fox subscriptions. You would have to think given how much fox and 7 have paid for the rights. The fact that the non mining part of the economy is struggling.I doubt the ARLC will get a Billion dollar deal. Even if figures etc support the fact that it should. The other issue's are demographics of the audience. Afl is supported by blue collar and white collar. Whilst in the Rugby market place League is blue collar game and Union is white collar game. Of course that is a generalisation. The reality that is pretty much what the advertiser are probably saying to the networks and that will effect the value of the game.

I have no idea what the next contract will be. If we get a Billion dollar deal happy days. But I would not count on it.

That what is suspected. Personally could not understand why they would spend so much money on AFL. That could go either way with what they bid for League. They'll be thinking shit the gamble on AFL has not been a good one. They i,m sure have longer view and perhaps things will turn around on that. They would be also thinking we can't afford to lose our NSW and QLD base. Which represents more than 50% of the population of Australia. This may put the ARLC in a good bargaining position as well. Fox might/would lose a significant number of subscribers if they lose the league rights. They might also be thinking that there are so many long term subscribers, knowing that a significant portion of them will just maintain there subscription just out of laziness any ways.

There is a lot a stake for all parties. the main thing is the ARLC come out on top.

I like our chances better with Grant than Gallop. Ones a yes man that other is a go getter

$750m/$850m is hardly going to get the clubs excited. If the deal for 5 years does not hit $1bn or thereabouts, the deal will be considered a big FAIL.

Kim Willliams toes the traditional line "AFL is more family friendly" and is Demtriou's mate which is why they forked out so much cash for a product that could have gone both ways. Sadly for fox and the AFL its not done as well as they would like.....

the key is foxtel
will they pay something similar to their AFL money (650 mill) for all 8/9 NRL games covered ?
they only pay 250 million now ... this would have to be doubled at a minimum , but when we talk about 1 billion we talk about all aspects our game has to offer in this next deal , including SOO .. tests.. four nations.. all stars etc

I don't think we can get much more then 850 to 900 mill for our club product by itself

but combined with our rep program (150 to 200 million) we can bust 1 billion .. & some loose change
add the Sky NZ deal & we're right on the AFL's hammer for overall dollar value;-)

I think they'll undersell the online rights because no one on either side properly understand how to monetize them. And there's a huge opportunity for spinoff programming they haven't even thought about. They think The Footy Show is being creative on that front.

So i guess the billion dollar question is... did these first offers exceed CH9's bid by 20% rendering the last bid rights for 9 void??

The networks were all quite anxious for the NRL to get on with the process so it appears that they're all still keen and nobody has dropped out yet.

I think they'll undersell the online rights.

They're not locked into selling them for a specific number of years so it's probably the hardest to estimate.

They'll have to offer some term greater than a year and likely the acquirer will want to peg them to the same term as the TV rights because that profile feeds into online and is important for cross promotion of online product offerings. It's a developing channel too so you'd want a decent run at getting the dollars flowing because there's a bit of consumer education involve to get maximum utilization. You wouldn't want to spend a bucket seeding and developing the online side and then have to either pay a fortune to hang onto it just as the returns are cranking or lose it to someone who hasn't taken the risk and committed the resources you have. You could end up paying to develop a product and revenue stream for the NRL and then get turfed just as your ROI is kicking in. So you'd want 5 years I reckon.

Why do you think being an ex-rugby playing engineer who heads an ICT company that specialises in business software makes him a new media and online broadcast expert?

And he did not "start" Data#3 although he joined them very early on.
