Im not 100% sure of the F & L clause ,but i think there is no requirment for the NRL/IC to accept that offer.
I believe it just gives them the option of matching/bettering the best offer .

Probably Doc or someone with a legal background could enlighten us.

They'll have to offer some term greater than a year and likely the acquirer will want to peg them to the same term as the TV rights because that profile feeds into online and is important for cross promotion of online product offerings. It's a developing channel too so you'd want a decent run at getting the dollars flowing because there's a bit of consumer education involve to get maximum utilization. You wouldn't want to spend a bucket seeding and developing the online side and then have to either pay a fortune to hang onto it just as the returns are cranking or lose it to someone who hasn't taken the risk and committed the resources you have. You could end up paying to develop a product and revenue stream for the NRL and then get turfed just as your ROI is kicking in. So you'd want 5 years I reckon.

I'd say 3 years would be the shortest, especially for Telstra, as all the points you're bringing up should have already been incorporated into Telstra's strategy from when they won the rights last time (i.e. they can't blame the NRL for their own failures).

Now keeping that in mind, if the NRL can flex that pressure against Telstra and Telstra tries to lowball, there are others who are interested - especially if it means breaking Telstra's stranglehold for cheaper (because it's 3 years) because cheap now is better than trying to get it 3-5 years from now after Telstra's finally learned from their mistakes.

So when you say

I think they'll undersell the online rights.

Like I said, it's the hardest bit to estimate. Ask 5 people what they're worth and you'll get 5 different answers.

These are all valid points. Be interesting to see how it all pans out.

I hope it's true, Nine gooooornnee, over $1billion for just the tv rights, Ten bringing some much needed professionalism rather than senile commentators and braindead hicks like Freddy. Sounds fantastic.

There may not be any leaks, but I expect a massive change in tone of presentation if (when) Nine learn they are done.

i think they'd offer some money to 7 to take a couple of AFL games as 7 did try to sell some off when they got the rights

i'd expect 10 would do the same if they missed out on the NRL

It is evident now a lot of rumours, whether true or not, are doing the rounds. What we're seeing now is the filtering of those rumours onto public forums.

It would be difficult to deny that there is some element of truth to them, Channel Ten have obviously made their bid.

But I still await with intrigue the role Seven will play. Not sure the saga is quite over yet.

It's interesting that these rumours didn't originate from here. They seem like they've come from a media source. Whether or not it holds any more weight is another story.
