I am aware this is only spreading a rumour that cannot be substantiated yet, but was any Melbourne-based forummer listening to this when SEN alledgedly broadcast?

Seems awfully premature to me:

Off topic but just sharing on a RL thread…
From the MV football forum … SEN radio in Melbourne yesterday afternoon has industry speculation saying Ch 10 has won the rights to the NRL…. with backing apparently from rinehart and murdoch

Read the same thing. Why would they have decided at this early stage, when they were talking a couple of months at least.

can only assume the following ,if 10 has nabbed the rights:
1) ch9 and the combined Fox/9 bid were so p*sss poor initially ,that there was little chance they would jump dramatically to up the ante.

2) ch10 came in with a mafia style:too good to refuse offer $1bn,fixed scheduling, national coverage. Then they onsell some to Foxsports.

3)Both 7 & 10 combined their "military"might, and 7 secured SOO and 10 the rest to be partially offloaded to Foxsports.

if that is the case,
Gus will need to flog more Oak Milk cartons to supplement his reduced income.

Somehow I think their are smokies being thrown around re negotiations to stir the pot.

I think I'll throw a party at my house if Ten get the rights. I'll also stick a picture of Rayyyyyyyyyy's face up on the dartboard I own.

If somehow 10 gets the rights in this phase (which I seriously doubt), then they are putting up a bunchload of cash for the NRL. How much, I don't know, but it would be well over a billion.

FTA component wouldn't be a billion, from memory AFL got 450m from 7...

not necessarily

they are only bidding for the FTA component and i think most of the money will end up coming from Pay just like it did with AFL

But if 10 came in with a massive bid,& got all games ,they can then onsell to Fox ,who will have to pay up big or lose their highest rating product & lose a shitload of subscriptions.

i think Fox Sports retain last rights options no matter what

Last rights doesn't mean we have to go with them.

The NRL could of said still yes to Ten after Fox came back with their "last" offer, now Fox have to pony up to Ten; leaving Ten with the burden of selling games and making or braking Fox rather than the NRL.

Fox have first and last rights to only pay tv don't they? That's how the NRL threatened to not sell to pay tv before... If the NRL decide to sell only to FTA they don't have to answer when Fox call... Am I mistaken?

I'm pretty sure pay tv can't bid directly for the rights. They have to buy them from a fta network but form partnerships to do this.
