It must surely still be better to try and get some games live on FTA. One of the things holding back ratings in NZ when the Warriors were in finals was the fact that it wasn't on FTA live. Casual fans who don't have Sky would then have a chance to watch.

While it would be great for the profile of the game here to have a better FTA presence (less of a delay, and maybe more games on free-to-air), the chances are that this won't happen anytime soon.

New Zealand has no anti-syphoning laws for a start - so even a sporting even as huge as an All Black test is only live on Sky. With a free-market friendly National Government until at least 2014 that's unlikely to change.

A huge difference to Australia, where there would probably be riots if major sports events were only live on pay TV - so used to FTA sports is the general public.

Does anyone know if Channel 9 paid extra for the All Stars or will pay extra for the NZ Origin etc? These concepts were all introduced after the last agreement. I'd hate to think they got it for free.

I would sacrifice a little coin in order to get better coverage. I would take 1bn with good coverage over 1.2 with average coverage.

NRL will pay for itself that there is no doubt, I hope 10 takes games off fox. If anything Fox treats the NRL as bad as 9.

be interesting to see if Fox don't show games in HD

they are using so many HD cameras for the AFL they will have needed more than they had last year

if they don't show games in HD then complain to your subscriber as they're the ones we pay the extra money for HD too

Would love to see a NRL network as instead of something like the Fox Footy Channel. There is no reason the NRL couldn't produce thedir own stuff and on sell it.

This means even more free-to-air coverage for which the AFL cannot charge an internet fee. But the AFL is a far-sighted business.
It has been preparing for the day it produces its own match-day broadcasts, hiring staff for a rapidly expanding media unit that is approaching 150 employees. It has already aggressively challenged mainstream media via a more edgy website and will have its own AFL Films network. By the end of the AFL's current broadcasting deal, the National Broadband Network will be in most Australian homes and the AFL will be in a position to sell its own games direct to online subscribers via AFL.com.au.
It must abide by the federal government's anti-siphoning laws, quarantining some games for free-to-air TV, but it will be potentially in a position to cut Foxtel and Telstra out.

the NRL would be well served to follow suit.

Are you kidding - 200 million dollars mate. Stop for a minute & think what that could be spent on.

Whilst i agree country wide coverage is important, we need to get as much as we can, giv or take 5%.

I think National live FTA is essential for the game to grow and clubs in Melbourne and Perth (hopefully) to succeed. What $ value you would put on that I have no idea. i would suggest National FTA and fixed scheduling would be worth losing $50-100mill over the 5 years, if the deal is over $1.1bill

So channel 9 could lose the NRL all together? After seeing how they performed last year and the tripe they are offering up this year (excess baggage lol) they are in big trouble.

exciting times with Ch 10 entering the game in a big way. i was one who was a bit cynical of Murdoch Jr being in charge of 10 due to daddy's involvement in foxtel.

in hindsight, of course this was more likely to lead to a partnership. i've always thought that rights are worth more sold off individually, but it doesn't look to be the case here. the rights sold as a package to 10 and Fox Sports looks to be the way to suck the most bucks out of the channel.

i don't think 10 are likely to get exclusivity - as others have said, Fox Sports can't afford to have no NRL, it's sparked their growth over the last 5 years, especially with Monday night footy.

i think a winner for all parties would involve 4 games live on Ten/One, 4 games delayed on Ten/One, with those 4 games shown live on Fox Sports.

While their HD is a bit rubbish, hopefully Ten commit to simulcasting Friday and Monday nights as a minimum on their "HD" channel.
