Well lets say Ch10/Fox put in a joint bid for all games for $1bill. Ch9 can't match and can't offer $800mill to ensure their 20% clause remains in place. Then you have the Internet rights and the competition naming rights to add onto that. Presuming telstra cough up we should be looking at a min $100mill internet rights and then another $50-75mill naming rights. Throw in NZ, UK and any other country that buys NRL coverage and you would be close to the $1.2bill most are predicting.

You're forgetting Channel's 7 potential role in all of this.

All games on 10 and fox = 1.1 billion. That will do.

Well said. When all is finished if we get something in this vicinity us leaguies should be happy as it satisfies a number of objectives.

* New network - 10 will undoubtedly do a better job of promotion and delivery of content)
* More money - 1.1B covers everything we need + a little more
* Future - Gives the game the money it needs to be more strategic in its planning (expansion etc)

Also achieves a number of non-key objectives
* Shafts 9, who after years of under resourcing and under promoting the nrl should lose the rights to televise RL - Also weakens 9's position as the number two TV network in AU, which in turns weakens their ability to sell advertising space.
* Shut up the AFL supporters - Doesn't matter if we actually beat their figure but coming close will definitely change the marketplace.

They have the AFL Footy Show. What else?

They put AFL personalites on their Reality shows - Excess Baggage and Celebrity Apprentice...

One of the segments on Excess Baggage featured GWS Giants..

They used to show some old fogies AFL kick and Giggle match on the same night as State Of Origin into Melbourne..

Eddy McChins obviously talks up AFL every chance he can get on the 100 different shows he has had on Channel 9...

Countless other things...

They have the AFL Footy Show. What else?

Thursday AFL show
Footy Classified http://wwos.ninemsn.com.au/afl/classified/
a 2 hour Sunday footy show
TAC Cup Future Stars http://www.tvtonight.com.au/2009/05/airdate-tac-cup-future-stars.html

all those combined add to more hours of AFL promotion than they have for NRL promotion

they also refused to do an NRL version of Footy Classified

In another sign that cost cutting is taking a toll at embattled Channel 9, sports bosses have shelved plans for their new Monday night rugby league show. The Melbourne equivalent will proceed but the Sydney version has been axed due to lack of resources. Sports boss Steve Crawley confirmed the decision saying: " We have had a year of excellent coverage and we didn't want to compromise by going to air with anything less than great."

Found this on page 50 of the Sunday Telegraph.

Agreed adamkungl if nine lose the rights I'm dead set holding a party. You can’t treat the game and its fans like rubbish for that long and get away with it surely. I get fired up over those quotes attributed to Gyngell too saying he'll fight to the death to retain league. What the f**k for I ask? To treat us all like dirt for years more to come. Nine must perish and suffer.

They also start a lot of their sports news with afl or have the afl news before the rugby league news in Sydney!

this is the one that irks me the most. obviously these are on the nationally broadcast shows like today in the morning but, f**k me, you'd think they would favour the sport they hold exclusive rights to during these shows.

it's like they think melbourne, adelaide and perth are more important than sydney and brisbane. they're catering to a smaller percantage of viewers. they think the afl is better than the nrl. none of that makes sense.

ARLC media release - New Zealand television rights
by Rugby League Week on Friday, February 17, 2012 at 12:21pm ·

New Zealand viewers have been given their ticket to the 2012 Telstra Premiership action with Sky Television today confirming a one-year extension of its existing broadcast contract.

The agreement is the final key that brings all broadcasting and new media contracts into alignment for the upcoming broadcast negotiations while guaranteeing New Zealand Rugby League fans access to the Telstra Premiership, Harvey Norman State of Origin and VB Test.

“With the Warriors kicking off the season with a Grand Final replay at Eden Park on March 4 this is a real boost for New Zealand fans,” Australian Rugby League Commission Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop, said today.

“Over 700,000 New Zealanders tuned in to watch Kiwi teams in all three Grand Final day matches last year and we were always confident that we would be able to reach an interim agreement for 2012.

“We certainly acknowledge the cooperation of Sky Television Chief Executive, Mr John Fellett, in finalising the one-year agreement in advance of the more long-term negotiations taking place.

Sky Television today expressed its commitment to bringing the skill and excitement of the Telstra Premiership to New Zealand fans.

“There is enormous support for Rugby League and the Warriors in New Zealand and we see that audience growing even further in 2012,” Mr Fellett said.

“It has been a sign of good faith on both sides that we have ensured matches such as the All Stars and Charity Shield have been guaranteed while these negotiations are completed.

“I think all New Zealand sports fans will be happy to know that we now have a firm deal for 2012 and the opportunity to negotiate longer term contracts in the months ahead.”

Fox do the same as Nine - Last year I was watching Fox Sports News and they had an 8 minute wrap-up of the AFL, followed by 2 minutes of NRL.

With 9, when I lived in Melbourne there was no mention of NRL on the news, not even the morning after State of Origin. Yet in Sydney they post the score summary of the day's AFL, and at least cover the swans...

It will be interesting to see how much Nine pump up the GWS Swans game on the news....

They need to look at getting more games on FTA in NZ when they look at the new deal for next year and beyond.

Pretty much every Kiwi sports fan has Sky TV, and they give excellent coverage of every NRL and Origin game plus repeats during the week, without advertisements. I've watched a few delayed FTA games on Prime TV in dire times, and it's bloody irritating.

If Ten got the rights and showed every game live on FTA, would that be end of Foxtel as we know it??

I wouldn't pay for it without footy and so would tens of thousands more I assume.

It must surely still be better to try and get some games live on FTA. One of the things holding back ratings in NZ when the Warriors were in finals was the fact that it wasn't on FTA live. Casual fans who don't have Sky would then have a chance to watch.

I think the reading between lines says that even if Ten got all eight games, it would not be exclusive and not all matches, if any, would actually be live. Remember Ten is a commercial network and if they're going to pay big money then they'll need to fund that with lots of ads. If we're not willing to make the space in the game for ads through guaranteed stoppages then expect most games to be delayed on Ten while being shown live and uninterrupted on Fox. If the FTA delay is only half an hour or so, that's probably an acceptable compromise IMHO. If it's two hours then we have a massive problem...

Leigh.
