I'm talking about the 2000 deal. When Moffet was CEO. Why have the NRL allowed our deals to expire a year after the AFL's so that we are always selling in a market that has had a huge amount of cash swallowed up by the AFL deal just a year earlier?

9 had the rights for 10 years after the SL war, they renewed it in 2006, there was no deal in 2000.

there was hardly any complaining

can't find the thread atm
I'm not surprised you can't find the thread where there was hardly any complaining.

My memory is of general outrage that the NRL had rolled over again for Nein without even going to market. I remember Kerry Stokes was quoted as pretty surprised because he wanted a red hot go at them.

Is 10 years the cut-off point where history goes from relevant to irrelevant? I didn't get that memo. I guess we can forget about Super League then. Or even 1895.

Not much in there about the money. I read the first two pages of shortsighted punters excited about double headers on Friday night, MNF and so on and just a couple of smarter ones asking about the money, something (unsurprisingly) omitted in the press release. RL got screwed by Nein and Fox again. And Ummm towed the corporate line by talking up the deal.

SHOW ME THE MONEY!

All I ever did was ask a question and all I got was, don't know, don't care, who cares, it was ages ago, and "there was no TV deal". And still no one answered the question why there was a six-year deal. When each deal brings an increase, as can be seen in both codes over the years, why did the NRL make a longer deal that essentially means we have to wait longer for a better deal?

Because news limited ran the f**king code and has since 1997.

Was that so hard?

The next question is, is five years the right time frame for the next deal? If we sign a five-year deal we might miss out for the same reason, and/or we will be negotiating just after the AFL again.

I think tv networks prefer the five year deals (3 avg years, one bad year and one really good year).

I don't have a problem with going one year behind the AFL if it means we know exactly what to go after and how to improve our deal instead of going first and getting totally blindsided like last time.

they didn't get blindsided. news ltd got the exact deal they wanted.

they have made back their money from their rugby league takeover and much, much more in the last 15 years.

unfortunately now they'll have to pay market value.

I remember hearing Gallop saying that the NRL wanted a lengthy deal at the end of 2000 so that clubs could stabilize after the SL war and the mergers/culling of the late 90's. I even think the clubs requested it.

Looking back I think it was a wise move.
