Actions speak louder than words Jeff. Start promoting NRL more heavily (including showing the game at decent times) and stop promoting your direct competitor and maybe what you're saying could be taken more seriously.

Bring it on.

But this bit:

"We do rugby league best,"

is only true until someone (anyone) else gets a chance. Hopefully that will be soon.

Fox Sports do it better.

Not that I'm saying I want them to have all the games, that would be terrible. But the coverage on Fox Sports is miles ahead of Channel 9's paltry offering.

If you took all the media covg of AFL in Sydney then it is a damn lot more exposure than not having any at all. I am always surprised how much media covg afl gets in Sydney in the papers and on the news compared to NRl in AFL states.

Not all media exposure helps a brand and it most certainly doesn't in Sydney if you're seen as desperate for attention, which the AFL are. The attendance and ratings figures are diving, the TV figures are probably their lowest since the Swans came to Sydney. If that helps a well-known brand grow in Sydney then I'm Yuri Gagarin.

AFL is advertising poison in Sydney.

I have no doubt it will go to nine. We will get extra money but the same crap coverage & we will complain about the same issues next year.

Am I the only one who sees right through this? This is just bluster from a very nervous man.

I wonder what concessions they are making?

National coverage of games live or near live on alternate channels outside NSW/Qld? Will the ARLC hold them to that if they get it?

The NRL needs a bit more control on the way 9 promote the game too. Gould and Rabs can fk their petty crap right off. In fact, a completely new commentry team would be good.

Okay, for $2b over 5 years, live coverage nationwide, fixed draw... you can lock it in now. Up to you, Mr Browne

"we want what we've got now"!

Surely this quote is the most concerning! Other networks want all of the games, nationwide coverage or hd channel coverage, nine just want what they have got now!

And a fixed schedule with fair distribution of games.

We all want this but that would actually decrease a potential offer.

I also have no doubt 9 will get them with Fox obviously at a significant increase. 10 looked like a viable alternative but apparently that is less likely now.

What sort of effect would a comment like Browne's have on the negotiations? To me it says Nine are desperate and will pay whatever it takes to retain the rights. This would lead to Seven and Ten increasing their bids to push Nine further and further. Nine might keep the rights but at a significantly higher cost.

Ratings rise augurs well for $1bn TV deal

THE Australian Rugby League Commission's bargaining position with pay-television has been strengthened after a record-breaking opening weekend reinforced the game's value to Foxtel.

With the code in the throes of nutting out a new deal with incumbent broadcasters Foxtel and Network Nine, The Australian obtained figures showing audiences are on the rise.

Foxtel's rugby league flagship, Super Saturday, had an average audience of 303,000 viewers, the highest ratings for an opening round in history.

Furthermore, the Monday night game between Sydney Roosters and South Sydney was the highest-rating show on pay-TV that day, with an average audience of 322,000.

Overall audience was up 9 per cent on the opening round last season. The most dramatic increase came in the 5.30pm slot, with 337,000 viewers tuning into the Canberra-Melbourne game. That represented an increase of 29 per cent on the corresponding game last year.

The rating figures shape as a significant fillip for the ARLC as it attempts to break the $1 billion mark with its broadcasting deal. They come only a matter of days after Friday night football helped Nine topple ratings giant My Kitchen Rules in Sydney.

"The week's ratings results were another reminder of the compelling nature of our competition," ARLC chief executive David Gallop said.

"Close games mean all fans know their team is a realistic hope of winning. The standard of play was a credit to our players and coaches - it's shaping as a great season and our value to the television industry was rammed home again this week."

Formal talks have commenced with both Nine and Foxtel, with the parties involved in the three-month exclusive period of negotiations that began on February 1.

While Nine and Foxtel are expected to come back with solid offers, the ARLC has foreshadowed taking the rights to the marketplace. Network Ten has an interest in obtaining rights to NRL games, while Network Seven has targeted State of Origin.
