Fox Sports do it better.

Not that I'm saying I want them to have all the games, that would be terrible. But the coverage on Fox Sports is miles ahead of Channel 9's paltry offering.

More and more im starting to notice how woeful SD looks

So 7 only want SOO??

No

the ARLC better not except the first bid from nine even if its a 1billion. they must take it to the mark.. make nine shit themself

They won't. It's going to auction.

Browne sounds like BunniesMan - "We got this"

4 months later...

"Channel 10 Secure NRL TV Rights"

Yep.

What sort of effect would a comment like Browne's have on the negotiations? To me it says Nine are desperate and will pay whatever it takes to retain the rights. This would lead to Seven and Ten increasing their bids to push Nine further and further. Nine might keep the rights but at a significantly higher cost.

i agree

only recently he said he didn't do his talking in the paper. that was after Ten said tey want it all

Both correct.

This guy is born and bred AFL, he was the lawyer for 20 odd years. First he set the gears of their last broadcast deal in motion then conveniently was hired at 9. Hmm... any guesses who put his name as the top contender...

This is all a good sign that the pressure is getting to 9. This is going to be a drag em out bare knuckle fight to the death and the loser will be relegated to 3rd place for the next five years.

If they know that they have to grow the game, why haven't they done for the past 20 years?

Here's how they've built the brand of rugby league thus far -

* Have more AFL related shows on their network
* Bare minimum network advertising of NRL
* Last minute/unpublicised programming changes
* Lack of promised HD & 3D coverage
* Breaking the law and broadcasting games after midnight in Melbourne
* Blacking out the game in Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia
* Delaying games and cutting off pre-game and post-game coverage
* Denying certain clubs FTA coverage and favouring others undeservedly...
* Shifting Super League to post-midnight
* Lying about being unable to get exemptions to show games on digital channels

Channel 9 does rugby league best..........

quick question: if Fox has been showing replays of not just their games, but also Ch9's FN and Sunday games in HD, does that mean that Ch9 have been filming those games in HD but are just broadcasting it in SD?

"We've got to help the clubs and invest in the league. We're not trying to buy these cheaply, we're trying to invest in the sport. And that's our biggest asset. It's not only about the money, it's about the relationship and building the brand of rugby league."

Um...no it's not. I would suggest the way they have "built the brand" of rugby league over the last 20 years will be their biggest liability in this negotiation process. Or at least it should be.

So, the next question is that IF they have been filming the games in HD, why are they only broadcasting the games in SD? Why did Ch9 all of a sudden stop showing games in HD (like they were 2-3 yrs ago)?

At least the Storm fans, when they get to see their team on FTA, will get to see it on GEM (the HD channel)

because they figure they get more ratings not simulcasting on GEM

all FTA channels do it now

Thanks for the link El Diablo, so an ex AFL lawyer brought to Nein under dubious circumstances by Eddie thinks he can’t lose. f**k I hope he's wrong.

I wonder what concessions they are making?

National coverage of games live or near live on alternate channels outside NSW/Qld? Will the ARLC hold them to that if they get it?

The NRL needs a bit more control on the way 9 promote the game too. Gould and Rabs can fk their petty crap right off. In fact, a completely new commentry team would be good.

I agree with all that but imo the Ten network could do a better job than nine.

:lol:Gyngell looks like an absolute gimp in that photo. How he got someone like Leila McKinnon I'll never know. At least his brother Kim had talent...

The biggest load of crap in that article is this part by Browne:

"We've got to help the clubs and invest in the league. We're not trying to buy these cheaply, we're trying to invest in the sport. And that's our biggest asset. It's not only about the money, it's about the relationship and building the brand of rugby league."

....ummmm...yeah, you expect to do the best for rugby league when your vested interest is clearly in a rival product (AFL), not to mention your affiliation with the AFL over the years. I'm pretty sure Eddie McGuire also said a similar thing during his time as CEO of Ch9 (regarding making a commitment to grow rugby league), and then after showing two non-finals Storm matches live on Friday night that rated very well, they were quick to shaft to Storm after midnight in order to save face. Browne's words are akin to asking Ian Chappell to give an objective viewpoint on Ian Botham or Steve Waugh - it ain't going to happen when everyone knows where your heart truly lies.

The good news from all this publicity is that regardless of whether Ch9 get the full rights or get partial rights, they are going to have to PAY to get them this time. As docbrown has said, they won't be able to fall back on Fox and they won't be able to get away and underpay for it like they did last time when they extended the rights in 2005.

I've got this funny feeling, should 9 lose the rugby league rights, you can bet your bippi they will go for union or soccer ,just for revenue's sake.

I can handle a petulant child short term ,but a bastard act for the past years,is a different proposition.
Notice CVC are trying to flog off Tickettek.to reduce debt situation.Things must be grim.Should they lose rugby league ,a deep financial chasm will open.

Well, that is one of the reasons why they bought the Rugby Union rights (also underpaid for compared to what Ch7 paid)

What a stupid article.
Telegraph said:
There is a growing belief that a serious push from Ten - headed by league-mad chairman Lachlan Murdoch - is unlikely. Late last month, Ten warned of a 40 per cent profit loss.
And yet no mention of the massive debt 9/CVC are in.

Looks like Nine will prioritise the Olympics over the NRL, hopefully the Independent Commission have a spine and make sure it doesn't happen. Because Nine want the Olympics in HD, NRL will probably be on GO!

Yes they're HD cameras.

Arrogance.

What a stupid article.

And yet no mention of the massive debt 9/CVC are in.

Both 9 and 10 need Rugby League to fix their debt problems.

It's all about who wants it more.

And then you have this other party who knows this, has a fat bottom line and can afford to buy it all and onsell to 3 desperate bidders.
