There was a game on before Origin tonight best of the NSW Cup v QLD Cup.

How come this wasn't shown on TV, namely Pay TV??? These are the type of game the league should be adding to the overall TV package. Every little bit helps.

After promoting a rival code during Origin no less, Nein shouldn't be anywhere near the TV rights.

If they paid the big money to advertise on TV at that time then they deserved to be shown.

Maybe Rugby League should advertise during other sports major events. Not sure if Union have any, but if its works for onion it could work for league.

Advertisers would be lining up to get exposure on state of origin night. The ARL should make sure low codes like union can’t advertise during and after the telecast and Channel 9 can’t cross promote their rights to union as well. All too late now, but should be written into the next TV contract,

Fair enough idea & question, but Ch9 don't allow it. As you rightly say, part of the tv deal that needs addressing. The curtain raisers in the other 2 games should be covered as well. ( under 17's, under 19's or whatever they are ? ). It would be a tough one logistically as Ch9 ( or whoever the rights holder for Origin is at the time ) would be setting up for their coverage & from what people who have worked in the industry tell me, this is a nightmare.

There would be a battle between Freeto Air and Foxtel to have the prime rights to show rugby league and even associated shows - as it should be in an open market. These media channels WANT and NEED rugby league. Rugby league is in the box seat here.

Imagine if Murdoch realised that rugby league including SOO would be Free To Air only. He'd shit himself - it would be incredibly damaging to his PayTV interests. If he tried another SuperLeague, it would go nowhere.

Further - if league controlled its own IP and distribution, then this could encourage other media groups to create a PayTV network to take on rugby league and put foxtel in its place.

So, why not wait News Limited out. Their interest is controlling the rights for another 20+ years. Why are we just bending over to Murdoch again?

Spot on mate. I have been saying this for years. I would love to see the juniors play. There are plenty of great future stars that I would like to watch. Especially when you think of the fact that many U20's games out rate the Super Rugby. Surely it would be better entertainment and a great build up to watch than anything else on offer. Not to mention the added value to the NRL rights. Can you imagine if it was on free to air on one of the alternative channels and it got around a million or so watching.

It's been an ordinary association with the game of RL over the years, in fact you've raped the product for a song. Arko giving the rights to Kerry for lunch money wasn't the greatest move and they've used us ever since.

Having that SBW merkin on during the Origin coverage was the final straw and it's just nice to finally have some closure.

We give Ch 9 so much power for such little return in comparison.

It wasn't that long ago calls of FNF games were barred on the radio because on the Ch 9 contract.

So many things need to be looked at for the next deal.

Neins only use should be for leverage for the best price for the tv rights from someone (anyone) else.
