I've heard the same. Ten & News will put in a simulcasting bid. It's to their mutual benefit.

But News will also leave the option open to go it alone or simulcast with other networks.

Yeah I think the rumoured News Ltd takeover of TEN was mentioned in Monday's Financial Review that also included the progress of Foxtel's proposed takeover of Austar. ( but I reckon Doc's "network" was all over it before then )

7 & 10 don't have to partner to break the rights up, it just needs to exceed 9's offer by the margin when combined.

There's too many scenarios where this can go to say 100% who will end up with what but yes 7 would like a piece of NRL. They are interested in either Friday nights (preferably) or Sunday afternoons to do a north/south split of NRL & AFL - if the price is right.

I do not believe that Saturdays will come to free to air. Monday night is a remote possibility. But both will be on the table.

I believe it will be a case of 4 games and 2 double headers on a Friday & Sunday and if a QLD team is selected for expansion you will see 1 team from there on both days to boost the Brisbane market. There will be at least 2 NSW teams on both days, if not more, particularly a local derby match. If 10 gets the rights, expect to see regular Storm & Reds games selected.

I believe there will be only 2 FTA broadcasters for home and away matches. Sundays in my estimation will be a toss up between 7 & 9 with 9 the favourite. Fridays will be a toss up between all three with 10 the favourite - in my opinion. Finals will be split between the two with grand finals alternating. You may see the loser from the Home & Away package pick up the entire rep slate or part of it but more likely the other 2 will lock that away too. Games will most likely be simulcast on Foxtel. The other alternative is that 9 will keep its existing slate plus get an extra Sunday game.

That's 100% speculation.

I hope the 10 network get something. I'd love to see league on ONE HD - surely they will guarantee to show it in HD.

Ten stopped simulcasting AFL in HD quite some time ago. Don't know why they'd treat NRL any different.

I don't like any bid that doesn't show the game nationally unless they're showing it live on a digital channel. To me it seems that 10 may be the only one who would show everything nationally, possibly Seven and I wouldn't expect Nine to even think about it.

The F/A and foxtel simulcast really does sound the perfect solution.

Everyone around the country gets the opportunity to watch the 8 games live;
The F/A network still gets their advertising exposure whether people watch it live on F/A or Fox;
& Fox can claim they show all NRL games live.

nrl needs to force networks to show matches in HD.

Absolutely. This point must be non-nogetiable for both payTV and FTA networks. The news coming out of CES right now is 4KTVs will be on the shelves by christmas. If you think SD content looks bad on a 1080p HDTV, it will look atrocious on a 4KTV (2160p).

Forcing networks to show on HD isn't a great thing, since none of the major networks have their primary channel in HD and wouldn't deliver the ratings they'd want.

Simulcast HD on Foxtel for all games would be something that would finally get me to pay for it.

This shouldn't be the case for the next TV Deal. Once the analog is switched off there's no reason why all channels can't be HD. In Sydney channel 1 & 11 are both HD now so it can be done.

Yeah prob only 10 will do it. In Syd/Bris 10 & 1. The rest just 1. They are rating 2% and need new programs for 1. Given they pay for the rights and that's it. They can save on royalities & improve the ratings.
