Exactly as I read it too, if the IC is not in place to negotiate then these bastards will need to be watched very closely.
Seems like a woeful attempt by Gallop for some sort of 'leadership' in the wake of the AFL expansion.
Does Gallop want to negotiate this well before the IC is up and running to please his News Ltd mates? Interesting times.... :-k
So David 'Conflict of Interest' Gallop wants to get negotiations started before an independent commission is in place eh.
Stay away from the TV negotiations please Mr Gallop.
We simply cannot do this very important deal with the NRL still being part-owned by News LTD.

THE creation of an independent commission to control rugby league will not alter the NRL's plans to use a sub-committee containing club representatives to advise it on the upcoming television broadcast rights negotiations.
The committee -- which includes Wests Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys, Bulldogs chief Todd Greenberg, St George Illawarra chief Peter Doust, North Queensland boss Peter Parr and consultancy LEK -- was established to ensure club involvement in critical broadcast negotiations before the present deal expires in 2012.
"It's a really good indicator that the NRL wants to involve the clubs," Mr Greenberg said.
"The change of ownership won't change things too dramatically . . . but it may mean negotiations are less convoluted."
some of you Gallop haters need to get your head's out of the sand.
Part of the reason we got dudded last time was because both 7 and 10 had spent all of their money on the AFL a year earlier and there was no competiontion for Nine and Fox.
We need to be doing this at the same time as the AFL in order to maximise our share of the pie.
He can't win... you'll all berate him for not negotiating or talking it up, and now he wants to, you're telling him not to
Our club committee and consultants have been working with the various scenarios and we are ready to maximise the opportunities.
the AFL rights were negotiated after the NRL's
He can't win... you'll all berate him for not negotiating or talking it up, and now he wants to, you're telling him not to
It's too late. He's had his chance and failed. Plus the conflicts of interest are more than ever exposed for all to see.
We need to move on and get the right people doing these important deals for the game.
That is him "talking it up" - how about - We're by far the most popular product on Pay-TV, we have a club comp that outrates all competitors in Australias largest market and we're the number one game for more than half of the population, we have internationals and SOO that put us head and shoulders above all comers and we will, come hell or high water, get what the game deserves this time around. We're welll aware of the various revenue streams available and we will be looking to the future with our revolutionary on-line offerings.
If he said ANYTHING that gets those messages across then I'll give him a thumbs up, but he can't or he won't, not sure which.
what do you think they got this Smith guy for?
He can't win... you'll all berate him for not negotiating or talking it up, and now he wants to, you're telling him not to
We will never forget him justifying why the AFL deserved more money in the last contract.
This cannot be forgiven.
