so wtf was Gallop on about

and how can he be made CEO when he seems to have nfi what is going on :fist:

I remember reading that the NRL could get out of first and last rights IF they split the game into packages, Finals, SOO, Internationals etc. Not sure if it means only the NRL comp has first and last rights then or it voids the whole thing.

That is probably what he is talking about. He might not want to reveal his hand just yet, but why would he help out the NRL anyway...

The AFL is going to be able to guarantee 9 games a week for the life of most of the deal.

Until we lock in expansion (Searle is a fool for suggesting 2017), it's a fact we have to deal with.

It's why expansion needs to be given equal priority when the new commission is in place. Maximizing our tv deal and paying for expansion are entwined.

If we expand with two more teams we should then get at least 1.3 Billion dollars.

30% more than the AFL? lol

In an ideal world both games at the moment should be attracting similar money, RL overall maybe a little more thanks to SOO but 30% is entirely unrealistic

Yep, and they have a commitment to quality HD broadcasting. And they are liable to play the games at good times all over the country too.

The only problem is Channel 9 having the first and last bid rights. To put Channel 9 out of the running 10s bid is going to have to be huge, and they are not an organisation with the deep pockets of 7 and 9.

This could be especially troublesome with regard to contractually obligating the game onto screens at good times all around the country. That sort of thing is not covered by the "first and last bid" agreement, which probably only covers the monetary and advertising-contra value.

Meaning, if 10 bids "we will give you 150 million a year and show it all around the country", channel 9 can win the bid with "we will give you 150.01 million and not show it outside the heartland". At that point we have no choice, 9 win it and are therefore our broadcaster.

Sure is interesting though

dont forget who just bought some of ten. Their pockets are quite deep and understand the value of rl to thier network

It would cover the structure of the F2A providers existing package only - so 3 NRL games a week, representative matches + finals.

If another tenderer or combination of tenderers come in and offer more for more games and more coverage, then they've exceeded the original agreement and 9 will be forced to match it. 7 & 10 need only do this for bid for 3 games & the rep matches remember - not 4. Plus as soon as another network says "we'll give you national coverage" the parameters of the original deal would also have been exceeded.

i remember reading 9 saying they couldn't split things up as they had first and last rights options

I think that was more of a threat than a real legal standpoint. If 7 & 10 want to show 3 or 4 games and split rep matches, 9 can't just block them as it exceeds their existing agreement. 9 would have to match it and whatever extends of coverage the other networks are offering - which is where national coverage can get forced onto the table.

At that point 9 will have to break its deal into several individual deals in order to go head to head and to at least keep part of the action, which is what we want as it puts all 3 networks at loggerheads with 9 wanting to keep all the rights and 7/10 wanting to carve out their own niche.

what i wouldnt give to be a fly on the wall in the Ch10 board room regards Packer possibly digging deep for the rights.. surely if he puts some of his own cash in he gets a few more shares in 10 to compensate.

Then again Packer paid below last time for the rights with 9. Who says he wont push it again with 10...

Furious Gallop slams commission 'nonsense'

David Beniuk AAP Mon, 31 Jan 2011 19:06:43

Furious NRL boss David Gallop has slammed as "nonsense" speculation News Ltd is now responsible for delays in the move towards an independent commission to run rugby league.

A report on Monday suggested News was holding out in an attempt to secure one last favourable television deal for the network it partly owns, Fox Sports, before it exited its 50 per cent of the NRL.

Such a move would threaten the $1 billion figure which it has been speculated rugby league, a proven ratings winner, could earn from a new deal beginning in 2013.

The flow-on from that would be less than anticipated increases in the NRL's salary cap and, potentially, the continuing loss of stars such as Karmichael Hunt and Israel Folau to big-spending rival codes.

The report suggested club chairmen were unnerved by suggestions of another delay and were planning an urgent meeting to discuss their next move.

"Everyone, including News Ltd, want to see the television rights negotiated after News Ltd exit their 50 per cent ownership in the game," Gallop told AAP.

"It is only those that chose not to call me for clarification who have suggested otherwise.

"There's not going to be a television negotiation until (the commission) happens so that's a nonsense."

League insiders have suggested an NRL club disgruntled at a recent salary cap decision are behind the report.

Formal negotiations on the new TV deal are on hold until a commission begins operations.

Delays on its set-up have prompted fears the AFL will profit at the NRL's expense, the report said.

The AFL's rights expire a year before rugby league's, but Gallop said that was not a factor.

"The fact is the networks recognise the ratings that rugby league secures and they've all expressed interests in our rights," he said.

News Ltd dismissed any suggestion it was now responsible for a delay in the switchover, after previous slow progress had been blamed on the Queensland Rugby League.

"It will happen as soon as it can happen," News spokesman Greg Baxter told AAP.

"We've got no interest in it being delayed but equally we've got no interest in it being rushed to the point where it's not done properly.

"Setting up an organisation like this takes a lot of time.

"We're comfortable with the track that it's on and we're not interested in holding the thing up but I couldn't speculate on when it might all come together."

Baxter said News would play no part in broadcast negotiations.

Meanwhile South Sydney chairman Nick Pappas, a member of the committee examining a 128-name "shortlist" of potential commissioners, said that task would not hold up the commission.

"From News, from the ARL, from the clubs, the aim is to work speedily on finalising those names," he told AAP.

I think if the cost-cutting rumours were true, the George Negus show would never have gotten aired.

If they're dropping Saturday arvo AFL and freeing up their cash reserves, it makes me suspect they're trying to spend to grow their audience base.

Monday Night Football, an Origin, some finals and some internationals is a good simple base for them to build on.
