i don't know if anyone read it, but there was a big story in the Sunday Tele just before origin 1 about Tahu and his upbringing in a boys home full of aboriginal kids when his parents had basically left him .... he seemed to have some bad feelings towards the way such things were run (tbh I'm surprised his bad feelings weren't towards his parents for pissing off, but hey) .... so I'm thinking he has some emotions going on about his heritage and childhood of late

If Joey said what he did and you find the whole team having a laugh, it's kinda hard to really want to play for that team when your principles differ from the rest of the team. Pure speculation at best on my part though.

mmmm - and they said he had a chat with Bellamy before leaving - so maybe if Bellamy, who knows Inglis, is also telling him to not worry about it, then maybe that didn't help the situation

tbh I am surprised it has happened as it has - as DeanPay98 and others have said, its weird that he didn't front Johns about it and have it out with him, but instead chose to up and leave .... seems like he's using the opportunity to make the issue very public and make his point

Johns has walked now too.
The question is why did johns have to walk if what being reported is true? he should have been sacked well before Tahu needed to walk.
NSWRL= Soft.

Absolutely.

I think we'll find that there'll be a lot of sympathy, support and understanding of Tahu's stance.
John's has trodden the fine line far too often for my liking.
If John's has gone, Tahu should be immediately recalled back into camp.

Tahu did what he did - can't get him back now - he made the choice

But I don't think that Johns meant it that way or understood all the implications.

I'm sure Johns intended no malice, nor even expected his comments would be taken that way. I'd go as far as to say I don't think Johns is a racist - I'm sure he wouldn't discriminate against a person of another race and I'm sure he only sees racist comments as good-natured ribbing; like calling a fat person a 'fat merkin' or a bald man a 'bald merkin'.

Johns is only guilty of ignorance but it's ignorance that is clearly hurtful to some people. I guess that ignorance will only be overcome by men like Tahu taking a stand.

I still agree with what others have said that there's more to this matter. Maybe the racism that Tahu encountered in rugby union was a lot more subtle and insidious.

This has been my thinking. I think Tahu was scarred by his experience in rugby union which is an environment where he was probably never subject to racist language but instead shown a world where social class pervades everything, and race is a major part of that.

Why not? He did what he did because no one else had the balls to take action.
Now that the offender is no longer in camp (apparantly) there's no reason for him not to return.
Not that I'll think it'll happen though.
Just saying what I think should happen.

1) cos its a footy team and they have just got to the point of coming to grips with the change and now we'll go and swap it back again?

2) tahu is obviously not entirely with it atm ... he chose now to make his stance and expose it - his choice .... I'm assuming he made that choice cos he felt like he wasn't dealing with the problem well atm ... and I don't think andrew johnssimply not hanging around daily will make it disappear

3) there's gonna be a massive media blow up now and tahu's gonna be hounded for his side of it .... not a good time to be getting ready for a SOO game

Being Indian (so also kind of black) I'm not sure if the allaged insult is enough to warrant walking away from SOO. My thoughts are that if anybody is racist to me at work that I won't be harrassed or bullied out of a job or any other lucrative opportunity. I'd just find another way to deal with the problem. So I would react, but not in a way that diminished my own welfare or opportunities.

But despite the odd flare up here and there actual face-to-face racism is pretty rare in Australia. Its more the stuff you don't see. At any rate, Johns and Tahu have known each other for about a decade. If Tahu has heard this stuff before then why not just tell Johns to shut it and as Fathead said, why haven't they had a major blowout earlier.

And though there's been a few incidents I don't think league has a racist culture. This is a sport that has had long ties to the Indigenous and Pacific Islander communities. That said, I wouldn't underestimate the stupidity, as opposed to malice, of the Johns brothers.

But Tahu is probably now in the position to react.

In the past, he probably turned a blind eye to it and stayed quiet about it letting it hammer him smaller and smaller, especially Johns was the man at Newey.

Now I assume TT is in financially stronger position, more mature, and have already done it all, he can stand up to it.

I actually applaud him.

I think Bellamy should talk to the team and ask to have him back.

I asked Bellamy after the Parra game to do NSW a favour and go and coach QLD. I wish he would even more now after his poor handling of this. How could he let Tahu walk while Johns was out surfing with his mates instead of packing his bags? Like I said before they have both had enough chances and both need to go IMO.

I played soccer with a team & i was the only ethnic out of a squad of 28. During a game one of my team mates called the player on the other team a Mediterranean Descendant.

What i did is confront my teammate when the next ball went out of play. I got into a push & shove with him. The thought of walking off the field to protest not only lets the person offending win but it shows lack of character on my part. The player who yelled that remark approached me after the game & apologised for what he said. I did not quit & playing for my state there is no way i would ever think of quiting on my team mates. COnfront him or just knock his block off but never quit

Everyone can sugarcoat this all they like. He quit end of story. Sports has plenty of story's where players fought through racism & if we all had that attitude of walking then we wouldnt be where we are today.

I am dissapointed in tahu because in my eyes he has quit

He didn't quit he chose to make a stand against racism. That is far far from being a quiter. I have the utmost respect for him.

Absolutely. It was an enormous decision to make.
Anyone considered the fact that it has been claimed that this sort of sh*te talk has been coming from Johns for years, and finally Tahu had had enough?

You cannot know what Tahu was experiencing.
You cannot judge him for his actions.
If he hadn't done what he had done, Johns would still be doing the same thing and no one would be any the wiser.
This will be a turning point in how league coaches talk to their players.

And Tahu didn't leave the game and leave his mate and let 'them win', the game starts on Wednesday night.

He quit no butts about it. There are otherways to take a stand. He walked out because of 1 person. The fact he did that means that he let it get the better of him. I have said all thru this thread. If this was another teams player he would have been hammered by parra supporters.

Rubbish.
Racism goes beyond team boundaries.

How in the hell would you know that?
And, btw, that's one hell of an assumption.

well I never said I "know" anything - hence it being an assumption .... and I made it cos he chose not to play instead of hoping he can put it aside and it not affect him

But it has mate.
Neither you nor I know what has happened in the past, but I'd suggest for Tahu to take this extreme reaction suggests that it's far more than we know about.
It's not up to us to be making assumptions.
