So I'll summarise what you're saying here.

Tahu - destabalised a rep rugby league team

Andrew Johns - Racially vilified a player in front of his team, which included Aboriginal people, something that Tahu felt very strongly about. It's not that he called him black, he called him a black merkin, which is digraceful. Every time someone says derogatory terms like that it reinforces the 200 years of mistreatment and shocking social policies by our Government and by people saying it's not a big deal its show that we have come NOWHERE.

Tahu has shown courage, you on the other hand are a complete ignorant pigheaded wanker

f**k you pal - I work as a volunteer for Sydney City Mission and deal with underprivelliged Aboriginees every week.

Where the hell do you get off calling me an ignorant wanker?

I suppose if you called me a black ignorant wanker that might make all the difference.

You wanna talk about social injustice, fine. Go out, buy a flag and get your ass in the grass with the committed. Write a few letters to the Sydney Morning Herald whilst sipping on your latte.

Meantime don't comment on things you know nothing about.

This is Rugby League princess. sh*t happens.

Sorry I called you that I was just angry, I can't see how people can't realise this is for more than just rugby league.

Tahu wouldn't walk out if Johns called Alex Chan a yellow merkin.

Johns was joking for f**ks sake, Tahu has a short fuse and is a primmadonna. Racism is obviously wrong, but it's not even about racism. It's Tahu trying to get attention and be one of the great men of league, trying to be one of the idols of the game in an attempt to fix his wrongs of going to union. Piss poor act from Tahu.

Just a side bit - does anyone remember Brendan Cannon giving to Tahu in his article a while back. I am aware his text did not contain any racist remarks (or any I'm aware of that would be deemed racist) but he didn't miss him either. Called him a pelican. I mean ... a pelican! No rsponse from Timana????

What Tahu has done here is deliberately and radically destabilised a state rep team on the eve of possibly the most important Origin match in a decade.

And that's unacceptable.

If he had an issue with Johns he could have sorted it out privately and man to man.

What Johns said about Inglis could have been said by any coach about any player at any time.

NC, you tell me to wake up to myself? What the hell man - this is first grade NRL, not the Anglican Under 11s netball league.

Get over it.
I am over it Jase. Racism is sh*t and there is no place for it anywhere - be it the NRL or the Anglican Under 11s netball league. State of Origin deserves no immunity simply because it is ultra-masculine. To suggest otherwise just makes you look like a sexist arsehole on top of everything else.

Am pretty much over it too NC. If I have offended you then I apologise unreservedly. Racism is sh*t agreed - one of my personal heroes is Martin Luther King and I am a firm believer in affermative action.

Calling me a sexist asshole is way out of context and makes you no better than Johns. I understand though that the comment was made in the heat of passion, which brings us back to the original issue (you might want to take note that at no stage have I directed any foul mouthed ephitets at you or anyone else on this board on this or any other thread).

For better or for worse I played a bit of League at professional level and unfortuntely these are the kind of things that get said during macth prep before crucial games. Doesn't make it right but that's the way it is.

If anything, Inglis will probably play a blinder tomorrow so the point is probably moot.

Am not racist (nor sexist for that matter). Each to their own abilty and plaudits to their achievements.

I reiterate though that Tahu coulde have handled this a whole lot better.

Peace,

Jase

ANDREW Johns emerged from hiding last night to honour a long-term promise to coach La Perouse United rugby league team - complete with its 15 Aboriginal and two white players.
The man at the centre of the State of Origin racism storm coached the team to keep his word following the death of one of the club's players.
The timing of the session reeks of a publicity stunt to counter public condemnation of Johns' disgraceful remarks in the Blues camp last week, which led to an offended Timana Tahu walking out.
But it can be revealed Johns' links to the club long pre-dated last week's scandal. Christopher Lyons, an indigenous rugby league player, died in a trial game earlier this year.
Johns was so moved when he heard of the player's death that he rang the team's coach, Troy Rugless, back in April to offer support.
Video: Joey at La Perouse.

"Put me down for a fundraiser or I'll help out with some coaching," Johns told the coach at the time.
When the furore erupted over the Tahu affair, Rugless contacted Johns and asked, since he would not be in Brisbane, whether he would come to La Perouse.
So instead of being at Ballymore to put the Blues through their final session for tonight's Origin blockbuster, Johns turned up at Yarra Oval, near the shores of Botany Bay last night.
No television cameras, no radio stations, no sign of his agent John Fordham. No quotes, no set-up photos. We took our pictures from a distance.
The Daily Telegraph discovered Johns' secret engagement via a tip-off from a Souths junior rugby league source.
When approached, all Johns would say is: "Look, I've only got myself to blame for being here and not in Brisbane but I'm glad to be helping the boys out."
He trained the A-grade side for about an hour, taking them through passing and running skills.
He signed autographs for the young Aboriginals from the under-15's who had trained beforehand.
Rugless, who is part Aboriginal himself, said the players were honoured to have the dumped Blues assistant coach at training, despite his comments at a team bonding session that led to his standing down from the Blues.

Jason, while you make some valid points, it cannot be argued that what Johns said was racist.

By calling Inglis a black merkin, he is hardly complimenting him. He could just call him a merkin and no-one would care. But he chose to use the word black as well. This emphasis is intentional and derogatory.

Some people have thicker skin than others. Inglis probably doesn't give a sh*t what people call him. That doesn't mean he has no pride in his heritage etc, moreso than he is not as easily affected by derogatory terms as others.

Tahu has opted to take a stand for what he believes in and to stand up for his heritage which should also be applauded.

Johns has played alongside Tahu, as well as many other Aboriginal and Islander players etc, he has been a high profile personality and sportsman for 15 years. He really should know better.

What purpose does he serve in calling any player a merkin anyway when discussing team tactics? It's pointless and does nothing but demean his own credibility. It certainly doesn't enhance his teams performances either. Teaching players to be disrespectful isn't going to make your team any better. In fact you'll most likely find it will be the contrary.

We can all bang on with semantics about other races and other social issues etc, but at the end of the day Johns was intentionally racist, Timana took offence and understandably so and he made a decision to show how serious is about what was said.

On a lighter note, I can't see why anyone is so bent out of shape about Tahu leaving camp. He's been playing like crap all year. The fact that his replacement is the even crappier Monaghan shows that selectors have no idea what they are doing. Tahu/racists comments/saga or not, the Blues will most likely lose tonight anyway. Their backline is average compared to Queensland and their forwards are almost equal to Queenslands.

And then there's the halves. Pretty clear to see who's got the better mob there.

I just hope that apart from dumping some of the non -performers in SOO for the Blues the NSWRL also dump the selectors. The selectors have consistently picked players on reputation, not form, played them out of position and just plain got it wrong too often to excuse anymore.

Daley?- woeful, absolute idiot wiht his reasoning and excuses
Fulton? - respected but too long out of the game on the sidelines
McCarthy?- same as Fulton
Gerard? - same as McCarthy and Fulton but a lot less respect. Wasnt that great.

So - only 1 selector with recent football experience (and SOO at that too). We desperately need new blood.

It'd be good to get a former origin player and/or coach on the panel

Do you think that tourism to the Black Sea will be boosted with all this coverage?

All week it has been Black Sea this and Black Sea that.

I know I want to go.

Calling someone sexist is nothing like calling someone a black cu*t. That's just ridiculous. For the record, I not only drew the line at branding you a misogynist, I also went to pains to say you sounded like a sexist arsehole - not that I think you are one. At worst, your views are simply conservative.

You haven't offended me. Your points and your insights are well taken. I haven't played professionally but I have played at a junior and senior level and I don't doubt that the same attitudes as I encountered at that level are on display in the professional arena too. But I'm not so quick to dismiss it.

Anyway, I think the point for Tahu though has not been to try to brand Johns a racists - that's just how the press have tried to handle it (predictably). Rather, Tahu has used the profile of his situation to make a broader point about racism and where the line should be. I applaud him for it.

There is a fundamental difference in our opinions - for you the game is bigger than the scourge of racism. For me it is the other way around.

Keep 'em coming Eddie. Your extremely well balanced approach to the issue has almost got me convinced...

What you advocate is discrimination against the vast majority to promote a particular race above levels that their abilities dictate they deserve. Imagine your stance if whites or asians needed less marks than Aboriginals and TSI to get into prestigious courses, such as Arts at Sydney Uni.

you can't argue with that.

Well said Eddie.

Some sectors of our community demand equality only when it suits them, but will happily enjoy the benefits of being a pampered minority when it suits them also.

As Eddie said, what is the problem with equality???

I called a bloke a "black" whatever the other night. I also said "big", "Parra" and "Uate" whatevers in the same convo. I was talking up blokes of dark skin, just as Joey has done on many occasions. It wasn't racist by any stretch of the imagination, just as Joey's wasn't. It's a figure of speech, especially when you consider he was highlighting the dangers of the two players.

You lefties need to f**k off and make up more lies about the climate while we get on with watching footy.
