Time to scrap Golden Point?

What should the NRL do to Golden Point?

Firstly, let me just say that I wanted the Cowboys to win, and I'm glad they won, however, NOT in the circumstances that it came to. A simple knock-on from the Broncos, their entire season, everything they've worked for came down to one error that will haunt Ben Hunt until he wins a Grand Final with the Broncos... IF he wins one for them!

Now that a Grand Final has been decided by Golden Point, it's time to re-ignite the debate - does it stay or does it go?

Now, my team have a pretty good record in GP (something like 75%), but it DOES NOT CHANGE MY OPINION that it should go. GP has never had a place in our game prior to 2003 and still does not have a place in our game.

My opinion is that after 80 mins in the regular season, we have a draw.

In the finals, we have 20 mins EXTRA TIME (not golden point), with 2 halves of 10 mins each, and however has the lead after that time is declared the winner. If scores are still tied after that, sudden death extra time begins until we find a winner. Whoever wants it most, whoever has the energy, whoever has the willingness to win it more will manage to do so.

So, what should happen to golden point?

Exactly this. I was on the cowboys this weekend as I think pretty much all non broncos supporters were.

draw in the regular season is sufficient. finals obviously need a result so sudden death after 10 mins each way is necessary.

If they insist on keeping GP in the regular season make a regulation win 3 points and a golden point win two points with one point going to the losing side.

my preference is still for the OP. devastating way to lose a GF or any elimination game for that matter.

how is it more devastating than losing to a field goal in the 89th minute? don't understand the thinking

because its sudden death, a GP loss would be devastating in any minute whether it be the 81st or 89th as there is no right of reply outside of a buzzer beater.

In extra time even in the 99th minute you would have stopped clock and a chance to respond if you can execute a short kick off.

Allowing draws in the real season would enhance the competition, GP was originally introduced to satisfy media . . . I don't give a tinker's cuss what they do in the finals

So you're saying have golden point after extra time?

That's how they done it in the past - if scores are still tied after 20 minutes of extra time, we enter sudden death. It's not feasible to replay the game the following week - especially given we had 2 sets of QLD fans flying to Sydney - accommodation, flights etc...

As fun as it was them lose like that, it should be extra time.

Golden point during the season is bearable but it has no place in finals games.

I am fine with golden point, but would prefer 5 minutes of extra time each way first (I think 10 each way is too much personally), with the hooter or ref whistle at 10 minute mark signalling golden point period if scores are still tied.
So no kickoff restart for golden point, whoever has the possession at that point is the lucky one.

I also had no issues with the GF finishing the way it did, FYI. It wasn't decided "by a field goal", it was decided by everything that did or didn't happen in the preceding 80 minutes.

I'm a fan of extra time for finals only. I would structure it like this:

Regular Season: Draw at full time
Finals/SOO: Extra Time 10mins each way then Golden Point - No Time Limit.

I would imagine it would be pretty rare to actually get to the Golden Point after 20mins of extra time.

I always say I want to see golden point scrapped. But then it's always so exciting every time it happens. Heart braking sometimes. But exciting.

I do think they should lose golden point for finals matches and just have extra time. 15 minutes a half or something. I even felt bad for Manly seeing them lose last year in the finals due to golden point. It's not how a finals match should finish. 15 minutes a half - and then golden point if they still somehow end up in a draw.

We haven't seen a golden point grand final yet....and I really don't want to.

Quoting myself from earlier in the year, golden point during the regular season is a bit whatever.

Finals matches should not be golden point.

I remember always feeling a bit flat after drawn games, it was always kind of awkward, even for the players being interviewed at full time. I remember one commentator describing them as kissing your sister ( our Queensland friends will have to tell us what that's like) another compared it to seeing your mother in law drive your brand new porsche of a cliff. It might of been because i was young, but i always felt that if only we had a few extra minutes to try win it. Many people under 25 have watched all their football in the golden point era, and it's become normal and they enjoy it whether their team won or lost. To change it back to draws may be a bigger culture shock to that generation as the change to golden point was for the older generation.
The other argument is that teams try to much for drop goals, but i find it no different to the last ten minutes of any match where the scores are tied

It happened once in the NSW Cup Grand Final a couple of years ago - the Newtown Jets and some other team - I can't remember. I think the final score was 8-4 after 104 minutes.

They had a chance to respond, Hunt dropped a spiral from Feldt.

I see no problem with golden point, it's entertaining and the Broncos had plenty of chances to put it away, they didn't.

We won't see this happen again for quite some time, it's a hard loss to take definitely but the great teams find a way to win and the Cows did.

A point each for a competition draw, the finals series, keep as is.

Everyone is aware of the rules, therefore nobody has reason to whine about them.

The Broncos have only themselves to blame for that last minute try.Hunt has only himself to blame for the knock on.

The Broncos and Bennett should stop using the extra time to whinge about their loss.

They (Queenslanders) always have this trait of blaming someone/something else besides their inefficiencies.

what about Extra time w/ Golden try

5 minutes each way (kick-off rules apply each 5 min half), field goals/pen goals counted but they don't end the match immediately (as Golden point does now). A try scored & awarded by the referee ends the game (Golden try). (Both teams allowed an extra sub at 80th Minute)

If no try scored in the 10 minutes of ET, the team with higher points after the 10 minutes extra time wins the match. if scores are still level, unlimited time starts (no kick-off, just play on from 90th minute) with Golden try the only scoring method to win the game.

Field Goals & Penalty Goals are not counted in unlimited time, another sub for each team is allowed at 90th minute to both teams, every 10 minutes that elapses during unlimited time (100 minutes, 110 etc) another sub is allowed. but surely it should not get to that stage lol.

the only downside is that it may look stupid that a team may have scored more points in extra time via penalty/field goals but lose as the other team scored the try to win the game, so as an example - the final score is 18-18 at FT but in ET/GT score ends up being 23-22 with the team with 23 points losing as they did not score the try)
