Time to scrap Golden Point?

What should the NRL do to Golden Point?

It happened once in the NSW Cup Grand Final a couple of years ago - the Newtown Jets and some other team - I can't remember. I think the final score was 8-4 after 104 minutes.

Tigers vs Roosters in 2010 cracked 100 minutes as well

Why not go 10 minutes normal extra time? That would give both sides a chance to win the match.

THEN - if it is still tied - golden point.

If it was 10 minutes extra time, you would be unlikely to kick a FG in the first minute. You would have to go for the try to negate the opposition kicking a FG. I think it would be fair.

Golden point (or even golden try) is such a shit concept, particularly in regular season.

What I hate about golden try is that you're taking out two legitimate scoring options - field goal and penalty conversions. Essentially, you're f**king with the rules and the way the game should ordinarily be played.

Regular season matches - 80' and that's it. If scores are tied, it's a drawn match and 2 competition points to each team.

Finals - 80'. If tied, then it's 10' each way. If tied at end of extra time, then golden points.

The NFL have revised their overtime procedures in recent seasons. It was similar to the NRLs golden point with teams winning it on field goals.

Now, the first team to receive the overtime kick off can't win by merely a field goal on the first possession. They have to defend it as well, I.e., the opposition have possession as well.

Personally, I think the NRL should just play a mandatory extra time in finals if scores are tied. Most times, it'll be sorted out in that 20' period.

It was 20 minutes, 2 10 minute halves in the past.

i think it was 12-8, 5 tries scored all conversions missed and something like 10 field goals missed

I like the idea of extra time in some way, not a fan or golden point as it stands. We make fun of Union over all the kicks at goal and the countless drop goals, and yet to decide our games we have a system that promotes a drop goal a thon. Golden try for finals and origin, but other than that let the draw stand. If Sunday night was golden try, one simple mistake from a simple kick doesn't decide the match, sure he makes the mistake, but the Cowboys have to cross the line and not just set up for a field goal every single play.

My opinion is that after 80 mins in the regular season, we have a draw.

In the finals, we have 20 mins EXTRA TIME (not golden point), with 2 halves of 10 mins each, and however has the lead after that time is declared the winner. If scores are still tied after that, sudden death extra time begins until we find a winner. Whoever wants it most, whoever has the energy, whoever has the willingness to win it more will manage to do so.
Happy with that - don't care either way about regular season - but finals should be 10 minutes each way extra time first

Let me add my voice to those calling for the removal of GP in regular season and the return of traditional extra time for finals

So basically just make the game 10 minutes longer? Both sides already have 80 minutes to try to win the match. How does your idea differ in any way to what we already have except for being 10 more minutes?

When scores are level at the 70th minute we dont see field goals galore, teams usually wait until after the 75th, under your system they'd just wait until the 85th.

I'm a fan of extra time for finals only. I would structure it like this:

Regular Season: Draw at full time
Finals/SOO: Extra Time 10mins each way then Golden Point - No Time Limit.

I would imagine it would be pretty rare to actually get to the Golden Point after 20mins of extra time.

They had a chance to respond, Hunt dropped a spiral from Feldt.

I see no problem with golden point, it's entertaining and the Broncos had plenty of chances to put it away, they didn't.

We won't see this happen again for quite some time, it's a hard loss to take definitely but the great teams find a way to win and the Cows did.

Not sure if serious..

How did they have a chance to Respond before Thurston even kicked it? or alternately hunt catches it broncos roll down the field and kick on without the cowboys getting a touch a la Lockyer against the Dragons a few years back.

Need a option to scrap it for the regular season and keep it for the finals

Ahh, now I remember... Wenty Magpies was one of the teams.... I recall Justin Horo taking a shot at field goal.... I think it hit the corner post!

There has to be a winner in Grand Finals, you can't replay it like the farce that fumbleball produced.

Why is that funny - it used to be 20 minutes extra time so what is the difference.

And it nearly always resulted in a winner - eg 1989 Grand Final.

They had a chance to win it because they received the ball first?
So Broncos had a chance to win it, they stuffed it up and Thurston gets the chance for a field goal.

That's footy.

A simple knock-on from the Broncos, their entire season, everything they've worked for came down to one error that will haunt Ben Hunt until he wins a Grand Final with the Broncos... IF he wins one for them!

you can win a game in the last minute of normal time with a drop goal, so i have no problem with a team winning the game in extra-time with a drop goal. for finals games, i am ok with golden point.

for non-finals games, if the scores are equal after 80 mins, then it should just be a draw, and each team gets 1 point.

because its sudden death, a GP loss would be devastating in any minute whether it be the 81st or 89th as there is no right of reply outside of a buzzer beater.

In extra time even in the 99th minute you would have stopped clock and a chance to respond if you can execute a short kick off.

if in the 79th minute you drop the ball and the other team kicks a field goal to win the game, and there is no time for the kickoff, you have no right to reply. so in extra time (after 80 mins) you should have no right to reply, if a team kicks a drop goal in extra time

Maybe extra time restarts should not be from a kickoff but from a tap where the play ended or whatever restart was about to occur.
