Both, as did the original with Tina Tuner. Much better ad. Don't over complicate it and over think it. It's a footy commercial. Not rocket science. Jimmy brings the passion and the player/footy highlights bring the product.

No SJW messages. Just pure footy stuff. You know, for a footy promo commercial?

SJW messages :joy: jesus christ you lot are easily offended.

Came here for the salty tears of people triggered by Latrell.

Wasn't disappointed.

I don't even see any SJW messages. It's not as if the NRL have included protesters for climate change, or images of Thurnberg (so everyone could happily declare how much they want to do violence on a teenage girl (which is not OK in a public forum, even in "jest", in case anyone is not clear on my views there...)), or people marching on parliament (well, actually, it does show steel workers marching, though that is referencing the iconic background of Newcastle, and it shows protesting for Souths. Is this what people are upset at?), or bushfires, or anything not at all to do with the NRL.

They've shown people playing league, supporting, league, iconic moments from league games and history, and players.

And some of the players are doing things they love. Holding a flag that means something to them, kissing someone they love. Celebrating after a win. Training. Some of the fans are doing things they love, marching, dressing up, watching their rugby league idols on TV, having a drink at the pub.

I'm not a big fan of Johns, and his partying ways, and his drunken antics after Newcastle premierships, but I don't think it is appalling to show bits of this. I am a big fan of Gallen, and ET, though I don't approve of all things they have done. But again, showing them hugging and crying after a premiership seems fine to me.

Are people so triggered by the thought that society now acknowledges to a greater degree that people can do what they like in terms of their private lives that they are upset at two football players kissing, but two hugging and crying, and others getting mobbed by fans in celebration is still OK?

Are people so upset that we are working towards a world where we don't judge people for their cultural groups, that they don't want someone to show that as important to them, but they are fine if someone wants to show how important drinking in a pub is to them?

I thought it was a great ad. And the only message I picked up is that league is great, played by all sorts of people, and enjoyed by all sorts of people. I have no idea why anyone would be upset by that message.

So, I really like the ad, the music is great, the player stuff is great, and I certainly ain’t wound up by any of the more ‘controversial’ bits.

What I would say is that I find it very cynical when any organisation purposely includes ‘diversity and inclusiveness’ in their advertising - if they’re truly diverse and inclusive, they shouldn’t need to advertise it, it should just be apparent from the way they are. So, with that in mind, I think the advert would have been much more powerful to simply include footage of the women’s game, indigenous players (which it does), probably some of the all stars pre game war cry footage, or where the Maori/indigenous players touched heads before the game - or just some of the general footage that shows how much respect the players have for each other (they’re be plenty of natural game/post game handshake/hug type footage that shows this).
It could be deemed as trying too hard for me. Didn’t need the flag stuff really, or if they really wanted the flag in, it could certainly have been done better without it being just 1 bloke on his own. The kiss photo does rank of ‘look, we’re ok with the gays too’.... those kind of messages don’t need to be said.

But, all that being said, I really don’t take issue with it like some have, and if I’m honest, I wouldn’t have even thought of the detail above if I wasn’t forced to consider why some people are so outraged by it. It’s certainly not that bad that people should be getting so angry about it.

the bolder part is 100% correct and perfectly said.

by highlighting it, they give the impression that they were wronging those groups to start with.

Souths not happy with the NRL putting their new golden boy in the firing line... and the NRL has minimised his part.

South Sydney Rabbitohs angry at NRL for Latrell Mitchell role in ad: Danny Weidler
The South Sydney Rabbitohs are angry at the NRL over Latrell Mitchell's appearance in its new Simply The Best ad, after the Indigenous superstar copped the brunt of a fresh wave of controversy.

According to Danny Weidler's Sun Herald column, Souths feel that Mitchell was put "in the firing line" to receive another round of racial abuse.

Mitchell appears in the new NRL ad draped in the Aboriginal fan; not the original plan for his shoot. The NRL said that he was happy with the flag idea, produced during the shoot due to low light, but Souths claim otherwise. His new club is fuming that his role has been branded "divisive" by media commentators.

However, Mitchell's manager Matt Rose told Weidler that his client was happy with his part in the ad.

Mitchell has copped ugly torrents of online racial abuse since rising to fame as an NRL player.

Before the ad controversy, he attracted foul criticism for choosing not to sing the national anthem; one of numerous players to boycott the national song.

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg told Weidler that he was "disappointed by the backlash" to the ad and that Mitchell would not feature as prominently during a 30-second version that will air during the season.

Tabloid reporting with the usual contradictions.

Me Weidler presents a compelling case with all of those quotes.

Just watched the Fox ad. Pretty good but kinda weird that theyre at the old SFS location, are they saying to Government, hey this is where a great stadium used to be, whens the thing gonna be built lol?

Also not a fan of Barnesy, as great as he was back in the day, his voice aint what it used to be.

Still its a good ad with plenty of on field action past and present which a lot of people thought the NRL lacked. I can understand that. I probably would've preferred more of that.

SJW messages :joy: jesus christ you lot are easily offended.

Not offended mate, just not interested to see it in a footy add. I just want to get excited when I watch a footy promo add, not think of inequality, tolerance or injustice.

I want excitement and hype. I want to get revved up and chomp at the bit to tune in. Not sit back and think of how the world could be a better place and some people have had it bad. I think most of us already know that and watch footy to escape those sorts of things and other negative things that maybe going on in our own lives.

Footy to me is inclusive and I don't want to be beaten over the head about it. When league is played well by to good teams, for me it's the most exciting game on the planet bar none, so highlight that, not progressive social/political messages. The kiss between the two girls, was fine in the context of raw emotion and jubilation, if it was inserted between before and after shots of scintillating footy action. But that add is just way to politically contrived and dull to ignite any fans imagination and get enthused towards the new season ahead. To many messages.

Yeah sure, a lot of talk and media attention, but did it achieve what it set out to do? Well if they wanted a politically controversial add sure, it was spot on. But if they wanted to excite existing fans and maybe tweak the interest of young new fans, I think it's very doubtful. Just like that KISS, they should have "kept it simple stupid".

Besides ending it by honouring Cam Smiths 400 plus games in the game would have surely left a sour taste in mouth of most NRL fans.

Fox spot is a clear broadcasters promo so relies on iconic broadcast vision as they should.
NRL is trying to be a purpose promo promoting their larger purpose. Harder thing to achieve but people asking for more game vision are missing the point or, purpose.

A rising tied lifts all ships. This lifts none. This keeps us all sitting in our chairs and thinking "what the F was that?"

See for starters I don't think that all cultures are equal and that is partly why putting political messages in a footy ad is silly. It's divisive. Footy promos should be about footy and any "messages" should be subtle. Look at what "taking a knee" did to the NFL in America. Much annoyance for fans and split the game into for and against, and ultimately viewership went down.

Boomers: the NRL should bring back Tina Turner and simply best

NRL: here's a modern take on the classic ad campaign to promote inclusivity

Boomers: NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

You're missing the point, It wasn't exciting. It was just heavy on the politicking. No one gives a sh*t about that in a footy commercial. The NRL should know their market and excite the people that feed them, not preach to them.
