So, I really like the ad, the music is great, the player stuff is great, and I certainly ain’t wound up by any of the more ‘controversial’ bits.

What I would say is that I find it very cynical when any organisation purposely includes ‘diversity and inclusiveness’ in their advertising - if they’re truly diverse and inclusive, they shouldn’t need to advertise it, it should just be apparent from the way they are. So, with that in mind, I think the advert would have been much more powerful to simply include footage of the women’s game, indigenous players (which it does), probably some of the all stars pre game war cry footage, or where the Maori/indigenous players touched heads before the game - or just some of the general footage that shows how much respect the players have for each other (they’re be plenty of natural game/post game handshake/hug type footage that shows this).
It could be deemed as trying too hard for me. Didn’t need the flag stuff really, or if they really wanted the flag in, it could certainly have been done better without it being just 1 bloke on his own. The kiss photo does rank of ‘look, we’re ok with the gays too’.... those kind of messages don’t need to be said.

But, all that being said, I really don’t take issue with it like some have, and if I’m honest, I wouldn’t have even thought of the detail above if I wasn’t forced to consider why some people are so outraged by it. It’s certainly not that bad that people should be getting so angry about it.

The reason people are pissed with it is because it is supposed to be a wonderful, but very expensive promo for OUR game that excites and celebrates footy. Instead it is dripping in "woke" politics. It's like squeezing lemon on you cornflakes. Not good.

Go woke, go broke.

You're missing the point, It wasn't exciting. It was just heavy on the politicking. No one gives a sh*t about that in a footy commercial. The NRL should know their market and excite the people that feed them, not preach to them.

There’s more vision of onfield action of rugby league in the NRL ad than there is in the Fox one.

Boomers gonna boom.....

The purpose of advertising is to win new customers, not to preach to the converted. If you're pining for the days of 1990 then you're probably so far locked in that an ad won't change your viewership of the game.

"Dripping"

FMD it's a 2 minute film. The Latrell scene takes up, what 5 seconds? The kiss and Macklemore a further 1.5 seconds?

"Dripping" jesus christ

I agree to a point in that, but it should also cater to the people that love and support the game too. Either way, does anyone really think that that ad will convert any major numbers of new fans. If they do, they are kidding themselves.

Go woke, go broke.

With the original ad, what new fans do you think the NRL was hoping to attract?

If anything they did a poor job of promoting women’s game, they only showed one clip of a try being scored.

Every 19 year old is like "whose Tina Turner and Jimmy Barnes"?
If either ad are trying to attract new fans they both fail, although Id suggest most younger people will be more in tune with the NRL one because of the social statements it is making. Not many white right boomers but that probably isnt their target tbf.

Who are they trying to target though and what part of the ad actually does that?

Souths not happy with the NRL putting their new golden boy in the firing line... and the NRL has minimised his part.
Are you a News Ltd journo? The NRL has done no such thing. They always produce an abridged ad that can be used as a commercial, of course it wasn't going to feature the full cutaway to Latrell & the girl singing :face_palm:♂️

The hand wringing of these News merkins on 360 is nauseating.
Buzz reckoned he liked the ad until Kenty kicked up a storm.

If you're concerned by the number of tries, hit ups or tackles in the ad, you're probably going to watch the game regardless. I can't imagine anyone seriously not watching the game anymore because they don't like the ad.

No, it will not.

It was a waste of money. Let's hope the $$$ spent on it reflect the quality of the ad.

Get a modern song if you want to attract a younger demographic. Strange mix how it is now

Probably targeting people outside the game who think League fans belong to a bigoted, white boys club.

I think the Trell, women’s game and kissy scenes help dispel that myth.

Like AJB said. Let the networks do the hype ads for current fans and let the NRL do big picture stuff.

The kiss isn't a fabricated moment, it was an event that created a lot of headlines at the time and showed the passion of the sport.
