I thought he'd done a good job so far. Much better than what we've had for the last 10 years. The upcoming decision about who will be the next CEO will have an enormous impact on our game for the next decade.

He f**ked up the rights negotiations. All the predictions were that the NRL deal would be further behind the AFL deal than when he started. And other markers were stalled, he made a big song and dance about getting us to 20k average crowd figures, and the crowds declined EVERY year since.

From all accounts he seemed like a nice man, he just was not the right fit for the game. Hopefully they do a better job of considering all factors when picking the next CEO.

Please no no no.
Heaven forbid we went down the aFL road of 3 srtike rules. Sweeping things under the rug and ripping off taxpayers.
No no no

How is the NRL 2 strike system so different? Neither code should be testing for non performance enhancing drugs. Catching recreational drug use should not be the business of the NRL or any sport.

Wonder if this changes the stadiums deals Smith wanted built.
The 1st tv deal he did was amazing getting fox,9 to surrender 1st and last rights how could he botch his 2nd tv deal so much.

Smith did not negotiate the previous billion dollar deal. He just came on board and spent the money on getting a 20k crowd average! Did they hit any of their growth targets in their much vaunted 'strategic plan'?

This. The game got more reactionary to the media under Smith, not less.

I didn't mind Smith as a CEO he was honest and tried his best for our game, especially the grassroots, however as you mentioned, this was his downfall.

Some News Hack giving Smith a bagging on Fox sports News, this is just the start.

Look for News to get another cheap deal into the future. Sadly most people have fallen for their spin.

Same reporter was championing Greenturds causde for the new CEO lol, he IMO has done a far worse job then Smith. Smith hired Greenberg to get the football side of things right and that is where the game has fallen down in decent times. Smith job was to turn the game into a busniess and set us up for the future and he seems to have done that.

Look for the next CEO to sign an incredibly small tv deal with FOX, but be lauded as a hero by the likes of buzz and Kent for getting the game back on track after Smith did his best to destroy the game
