Surprised that Turdy Greenberg didn't use the Chewbacca defence or argue it was "the vibe" or Mabo. Is there case law supporting what some kids from touch footy said as a defence for restraint of trade?

TBF JDB lawyer was trying to say having the video ref was also damaging the game, to draw a comparison to a player charged with rape and the VR is equally embarrassing. It sounds like a comedy skit in the courthouse!

TV ratings are up. NRL club memberships are up. Women playing are up...So where are these people leaving the game?

It needs to be sorted but zero tolerance on all convicted players has more of an affect then this will. IF JDB is found not guilty it puts more bad press on NRL anyway. Better to deal with it after the courts do

If your looking at this year after the off season from hell, TV is down, memberships are static and we dont know the impact on playing numbers yet.

What gets me is Todd is the one stating that girls are turning away from participating in touch league. And he’s using that as part of the justification for the sanction on JDB.

He may even be right... I don’t know.... but his comments reek of someone who doesn’t have the first clue if it’s true or not. I expect more than a one team canvas of his daughters f**king touch team that’s for sure.

I heard there will be a release of the court documents(Brett Read) and sponsors input without stating the amount of money an individual sponsor puts in.
I suggest Greenberg's daughter commentary would be just a snippet of the examples he would cite.If it was the major one ,then he's dreaming.
The interesting point, would be the Storm's Campbell's testimony, who always secured sponsorship with his team with no hitches. He stated it was terrible after all the off season issues to get people interested. You can't ignore areas of income that are vital to the game's growth and sustenance.

This, they went behind closed doors to show the judge the commercial risk the game has been put at. They dont want that dirty laundry airing in public. Forget the daughter comment, that was just a throw away for the public, the real evidence of the damage to the game has been provided by the NRL COO and Campbell behind closed doors.

Does anyone believe many are turned off the game because of alcohol and betting sponsorship? Whilst not a big fan (especially the betting which does my head in being rammed down our throats) I cant say it is a big issue for me and certainly not enough to walk away from the game.

From this forum in the Membership thread:

Last year as of 12/4: 293,484
This year: 302,798... Dragons and Panthers 2 of the teams that were involved in this bad off season are up by plenty

Panthers junior numbers are up: https://www.penrithpanthers.com.au/news/2019/04/10/panthers-primed-to-break-junior-league-record/

NSWRL womens comp:

Last year 7 teams. This year has 11

https://www.nswrl.com.au/draw/?competition=162&season=2018&round=8

So again..Where is the drop off? Most RL fans now see through the media spin and the good that the Players and clubs do

You speak to the mothers. Junior RL in my town is thriving.

I’ll speak to the grassroots, long term supporters that have had a gutful of the way this sport is run and have simply walked away.

That's good to read.
However, my wife and daughters speak and socialise with the mothers, and they live in this city, where all this alleged rubbish happened. When my daughters ask, what is wrong with these guys? What do you say? I'm sick of making excuses, boys will be boys stuff.

I also know long term supporters who left the game via Super League, the removal of Norths and even Joint ventures.Like sh*t ,it happens. And people had a gutful when Arthurson seemed to play favourites with Manly.
And if any team is relocated some long term supporters or even newer ones will toss it in.
I have a fair idea about the grassroots in my area, and the challenges it faces.

Great news about Penrith. Their senior age teams are up as well this year.

Negative anecdotal evidence is always amusing when the numbers actually stack up in the positive.

So far to date its been in the crowds down, though Easter figures not yet taken into account.Parra stadium will help crowds.

I have stated the memberships are up 3%,but if crowds are down ,it's Peter paying Paul.
One thing that is the unknown,Dragon's memberships are up, whilst JBD stood down. The question is does that have a bearing ,because of the stand down decision?.And if play had continued would it have gone down?

Most rl fans know indeed ,players (98%) do good off the field. It's the potential or non rl fans who are the ones who need convincing ,because they cannot ignore what the media reports good or bad.
Especially when you are trying to grow the game in AFL states, and their media have a field day, of any NRL incidents.EG the ABC Offsiders Melbourne based.

I thought crowds were stable. And Easter was earlier last year so there’s ground to be made up there.

That's what I'm suggesting in my posts.I last read the crowds were down a little and Easter yet to be included.
My point is /was if crowds are down ,and memberships are up later, why the drop in crowds. It it the off season debacles ?
I also pointed out yes the Dragon's memberships are up, but was that a result of the JBD stand down?

My view is, what if hypothetically there had been no off season incidents.Where would our memberships, crowds and juniors numbers be ?Same as now? Better?
And who knows the Sharks may have had a sponsor earlier, although our management in the past carried on like delinquents.

It's almost impossible to reach a position on crowds until the ANZAC Round is complete (and then we only have two weeks of real comparisons before Magic Round screws crowd comparisons completely for the remainder of the year lol).

There's no point comparing this year to last year as Round 4 was easter, this year it's Round 6.

I think it would be the same. There is always stuff going on in the background in RL

Yeah that is right compare after Next weekend for the 2. Late Easter this year makes it harder

Yeah that lawyer's argument about booze and betting is left field paper thin stuff, which has been around since 2 up on Anzac Day, and money spent on Winx bets are both legal ,and used by the major codes here and overseas. In fact a public holiday is declared in Vic with the Melbourne Cup.

It's a legal activity, I wouldn't know one end of a nag from another, so to secure sponsorship from this activity is a fair commercial activity. Some may not like it, but it is ingrained in most sport these days.

Yes I get out, alcohol can make people and players do dumb things ,but that's the individual's choice.

Crowds are down but given the bad weather do you think even a clean off season changes that? Broncs are struggling too.

You could have not a single incident and media would find something to bag RL out about. Like that Michael Morgan guy yesterday. Deals coke and they mentioned he trained with the Bulldogs

Mate seriously? We have never had to my knowledge an off season like last.It was getting to the stage ,if it kept going, whether to just watch on TV or be as in the past a member.
And I;ve been following this great game for yonks.

I'm not a magician, but I do know having the major Sydney crowd gatherers ,Eels/Souths/Dragons/Tigers doing well the crowds should or would follow accordingly. You lose Broncos crowds, these guys should more than make up for it.
Yes people drop off if their team plays like drones, but there is only one other major Sydney crowd drawing club, the Dogs who are struggling ATM.

Weather plays it's part, and we have a fine weekend coming up.And when the next fortnight is over if we have had good weather, then that'll be the real test re crowds.

But we have had crap weather in the past also.A Cat 2 cyclone when Cronulla played a few years ago against Souths, which would have down 16,000, got about 4k nut cases .

I don't agree with the media, mentioning the past of a person being charged as having a rl background.
Trouble is we have had so many incidents ,some repeat offenders, that creates this opportunity for the media to sink the boot in.If we didln't have the history, the media couldn't use it.
The editor of the DT ,don't know if he's still there was an AFL boot licker ,and he always had something to say in his editor;'s comments about bagging rl.
