One preliminary final I'll mention after is 1993, Brisbane Vs Bulldogs. The Broncos got away to a good start, tries to Hancock and Renouf who made a surprise comeback but the Dogs came back to lead at half time. It was fairly close until Langer's magic got the Broncos home and it was Alan Cann's busting through about 6 defenders that put the icing on the game, I think they won 23-16.

Yep, classic game.

The Roosters V Knights 2000 preliminary final is one of the best finals games ever. Newcastle 16-2 ahead and charging but Freddy inspires the Roosters with a remarkable comeback. If you want to see a game that demonstrates the greatness of Brad Fittler look no further then this.

Unfortunately you don't to see Andrew Johns throw his mouth guard.

Was the real GF that year. That one stings more than 89. Todd Payten was ruled out during the week, he fell over a ball at training or something. What a Tigers thing to do. We didn't lose many with him in the side. Drags though were rewarded for a couple of consistent seasons. They should have been playing Raiders really, after Croker missed a goal from in front the week before. We should not have been playing on that side of the finals draw, as we choked against Roosters despite being a 20 point better team. Good finals series.

Croker's kick wasn't from in front. But it wasn't that difficult either. You only won thanks to a dodgy Jared Maxwell penalty. Tom Learoyd-Lahrs was penalised for holding down right in front of the sticks when he didn't have a hand on the Tigers fibber, he literally threw himself to the ground and milked one out of one of the most inept referees ever. The ensuing penalty goal was the difference at the end.

Totally undeserved.

I can't really remember much about the quality of the game, but the 1994 final between Canberra and Norths certainly had plenty of drama, with two send-offs, a field goal at half time and a second half comeback to send the mighty green machine into the grand final.

man that’s great viewing, not a second man play in sight, just awesome footy from natural footy players
Yeah I think the NRL was much more exciting to watch at the start of the century. The attack was more free flowing and instinctive.

And watching Freddy & Joey dissect defences with their pin point long range passes to their centres/wingers who were hitting the ball at speed, time and time again, was just a sight to behold.

Well deserved as the Tigers were able to overcome the magical skills of Glenn Buttriss at hooker. Still, he was better than that myth Steve Walters.

What were your thoughts on the refereeing that day?

As a favour to you all, I thought I would list, from best to worst, the NRL era PFs of the peoples team, all 12 of them.

1 2000 V Knights - lol@Joey
2 2018 V Souffs - lol@Souffs
3 2003 V Dogs - Probably the sweetest victory I ever witnessed to that point
4 2002 V Brisbane - A very tight and tense affair
5 2013 V Knights - A procession
6 2019 V Storm - A tight gritty affair won without our best prop
7 2004 V Cowboys - Exceptional level of officiating during this game
8 2010 V Titans - Our only away win although 2002 and 2019 we were the lower ranked team
9 2017 V Cowboys - The most enjoyable of the losses
10 2015 V Broncos - lost in the first minute
11 2014 V Souffs - The day rugby league died until we resurrected it in 2018
12 1998 V Broncos - A complete drubbing.
