He was the complete player - a great defender and by a million miles the best attacking backrower that I've seen.

So why did he score so few tries compared to Beaver? SBW hit the line hard, Beaver went straight through it. Defensively, Beaver was also a machine. Hit low, dump them on their arse, realign the headgear then do it all again.

The footwork he had for a bloke his size was phenomenal

Not just the footwork but his hands- I remember him throwing 10 offloads in one game or something ridiculous like that at one point- he seemed to be able to get his hands free at will.

Well heck, when you put it that way I reckon Beaver is the greatest player ever.

Beaver was an absolutely brilliant rugby league player. A natural, instinctive talent.

But if you asked 100 coaches who they'd prefer in their prime - SBW or Beaver - I reckon at least 99 would choose SBW.

There's no shame in not being as good as a once in a generation genius when you yourself are a truly great player.

Beaver is to SBW what Brett Stewart is to Billy Slater in terms of talent. A rung below.

Just different kinds of attacking player, Beaver was an absolute master at running the right lines and hitting holes from close range and going through to score whereas SBW seemed to be more adept at busting through tackles in the middle third and offloading to support. Similarly different kinds of defenders SBW would put in the big shots whereas Beaver had awesome classic tackling technique.

Was watching a game we lost against the Sharks in 2005 over the weekend and I think it was Sterlo singing his praises. How right he was.

I don't disagree with any of that. My point was that contrary to Tommy's assertion, SBW wasn't "by a million miles the best attacking backrower". The reality is, according to Tommy, putting on a Rooster's jersey adds something that other players can never reach.

Tommy doesn’t reckon that at all, check what he says about SBW as an 18 year old playing for Canterbury on the previous page.

What if you told them 1 would be a genuine RL legend who'd devote himself to a single code and play 477 professional games (plus Origin and Internationals), 349 for the one club. While the other will skip out to RU mid contract and spend a total of 6 seasons in RL over a decade?

Beaver was a RL player, he'll always get the nod over a part-timer like SBW.

This. Add to that SBW spent a lot of his time at the Bulldogs injured and was abit inconsistant at times too. SBW at his best was unbelievablely good but I’d prefer Menzies for his consistency and durability.
