It's quite simple really... the selectors rate him as the 3rd best FC all-rounder in the country behind Symonds and Watson. He also contributed well in the 3rd test win in Sydney.

I'd just put Johnson in as the allrounder and play an extra bowler or batsman. On a flat wicket how effective will McDonald be??

After all Australia's weird desire for an allrounder really started after Flintoff went well against us. Well Flintoff is a bowler who can bat a bit, same with Johnson. North or Clarke (when fit) can chuck down a couple of overs of spin if we need a bit of variation.
