Moving forward: Feathers fly as Dragons make record offer to Trent Merrin

By Paul Haigh

Dec. 1, 2014, 3:44 p.m.

Dragons and Roosters are bidding over Trent Merrin with St George making a record offer as they await a decision on Russell Packer.
Merrin, 25, has been tabled a three-year contract offer valued at $1.8 million.
His current contract expires at the end of 2015.
The Sydney Roosters are also clawing for Merrin?s signature.
The offer is under consideration by Merrin and his manager Wayne Beavis.
Merrin, who has played 107 NRL games for the Dragons, made his debut in 2o09.
Dragons recruitment manager Paul Mulholland said the club wanted a a decision on the offer made before Christmas.
??It is the best offer the Dragons have ever made a forward,?? Mulholland said.
?It will make him one of the highest-paid middle players in the game.
?We are just waiting for Trent (to decide).?
The Dragons are keen to sign jailed prop forward Russell Packer, who is to be paroled in January after serving 12 months for an assault.
Packer, who left the New Zealand Warriors to join Newcastle, had his contract ended by the Knights when jailed.
The NRL would have to approve a contract to register Packer before he could sign with any club.

If the Roosters are interested then I would say he's as good as gone. They never miss their mark.

Merrin rejects Dragons: seeks more cash

TRENT Merrin and his manager Wayne Beavis have rejected St George Illawarra Dragons' three-year offer to retain the star forward.

Merrin, 25, comes off contract at the end of next season.

Beavis said on Monday that the contract offer was too low.

"We will be talking with other clubs now. There are plenty of them interested."

Beavis said it was up to the Dragons to come back to him and Merrin with a better contract offer.

"We won't be chasing them (the Dragons), that's for sure," he said.

"The offer they made is not in the spirit of the negotiations."

The Leader understands the Dragons tabled a three-year, $1.8 million deal to keep Merrin in the Big Red V.

Retaining Merrin had been the top priority for St George Illawarra.

The Sydney Roosters have been linked with Merrin for 2016 and beyond.

They have been clawing to get Merrin's name on a contract for several months.

Sonny Bill Williams' defection to rugby union has freed up cash under their salary cap.

Merrin, 25, has played 107 NRL games for the Dragons since his 2009 debut. Merrin went to Tempe High School and was a Newtown junior but he moved with his parents later to the Illawarra region.

He then played his junior rugby league with the Shellharbour Sharks.

I can't post links not enough posts but its on the Leader site.

If this is true then stuff him, move on let the roosters have him.I think 1.8k over three years for him is more than enough. If he does rejct the offer i would play him in the front row for the year with plenty of minutes & burn him out so when the roosters get him he is nice & flat.Or just play him in the cutters.

Politis will pay Merrin that money Saints offered under the table and then offer him 500k a season which will be in the Salary cap just like he did with Sonny Bill. What a rort. Good as gone. What a joke.

Agree,he can get stuffed.Get what we can out of him this season and spend the money on Kasiano or someone.

Totally agree
Over Rated and over paid :x
If he wants out . show him the door now ... Money saved on him could go else where to some one who WANTS to play for the Club ..
Lets however hope Sal stays and gives him the flick

For Wayne Beavis the grub to insult our club like that infuriates me,he can take his client elsewhere, don't give a toss.

Wouldn't be surprised if Trent is at the roosters for 2015 season looks like the platform getting set for an early exit like bmoz.

If true he can go and get f**ked. Greedy souless prick can become another byproduct of what the NRL has become.

So Merrin will be joining Taumalolo, Foran and Folau at the Roosters in 2016?

I'm amazed that people still believe the "so and so is linked to the Roosters line" that agents use for every star player.

So Trent Merrin, a local junior with a premiership ring is offered a contract value above his true worth and rejects it? Is this the kind of leader we want in our club? He is now 25 years old and what has he done in the last 3 years to stand up for the club? Not much according to results. He is over-rated, has not played international football and might as well take his swag and nick off. We can surely use the money allocated for Merrin for some other young big bopper.

Merrin's attitude really puts Ben Creagh's continued selfless contribution to the club into perspective.

Let Merrin go now and lets clean the joint out once and for all. If not I would be making him start every game in the front row and telling him that "Your job is to take 2 hit ups a set for the 1st 20 minutes of each half mate. You can start earning your money mate. No hiding in the backrow for you mate".
