I honestly think Channel nine does a great job. You people whinge for the sake
of whinging. The Tigers are always well represented and the commentary is
always positive. I don't see the problem.

I'm looking forward to the next five years under nine.

The money is excellent but I'd like to see what they actually do with the money first. I just hope it goes towards juniors, local, and country footy before it goes towards players getting $1 million a year.

Given the AFL scored $1.118b in cash with up to $153m of that being for online rights, a quick bit of arithmetic.

AFL - $965m cash for 9 games a week = $107.2m per game
NRL - $925m cash for 8 games a week = $115.6m per game

AFL - $965m cash for 990 games (5 seasons x 198 games) = $975k per game
NRL - $925m cash for 960 games (5 seasons x 192 games) = $964k per game

AFL - $965m cash for 990 games x 3 hours = $325k per television hour
NRL - $925m cash for 960 games x 2 hours = $482k per television hour

Of course none of that includes Origin or Four Nations (finals pretty much cancel each other out). So pull the NRL figures back say 10%. Still not too bad. And we haven't yet sold the NZ rights.

Leigh.

What's the obsession with the AFL comparison?

Diablo on the last thread about this topic posted a link to a BigFooty thread for the lulz, as he put it.

Having a look at that thread, most of the posters seem to think that on the whole, the ARL did well for themselves but have f**ked the fans over, much the same as most on here seem to think.

Exactly! The money is just the means to the end. It is what the ARLC now do with it that really matters. Sure, give some to the clubs and the players but some needs to be retained for strategic investment.

I guess we will need to wait to see what their plans are with this...

No.

Channel Nine still gets to choose this.

The deal offers nothing different to what was already the case except the timing of the release of scheduling is different.

So if 20 rounds are released prior to a ball being kicked, lets start the over/unders for FTA games.

I'll start with:

Broncos at 14.5 (taking into account 2 byes).

It would include NAB cup as the AFL Season is shorter in length but with the NAB Cup mirrors the NRL season (but the 'finals' of the NAB cup mean less games are played).

There is no guarantee that the extra money will go to grass roots - the clubs and players will want that money.

However, it DOES guarantee that the same clubs have better bargaining power with sponsors and attracting fans because they are on FTA 50-70% of the time, whilst others get less than 10% of theirs.

This deal is the old deal just with updated figures. The fans and most clubs get f**ked over again.

Quidgybo's numbers didn't include the NAB Cup ( the regular season is 22 rounds @ 9 games a round = 198 games). What I was getting at, is that it's not point saying "excludes X&Y games" on the NRL side, if you don't say the same fot eh AFL side of the equation as well. What Quidgybo's anayalys points out is that ARCL negotiated a fiar $ value return for the product being sold based on a "revenue per game' basis.

But I agree with you 100% about the fact that some teams (yes Broncos and Bulldogs I'm looking in your direction) get a tremendous leg up in terms of sponsorships because of their free to air coverage. Which is why I personally think the game easily could have sacrificed some "TV" money in order to get more live FTA games, because the lost "TV" revenue should in theory have been able to be compensated by increased eyeballs looking and jersey and signage sponsors.

After listening to Gyngell at the presser, the over/under should be 19.9999 recurring.

Have to say I'm a little disappointed in this deal. Not the dollar value, but what we the viewers get. Nothing changes for us..

I was really hoping that Foxtel would get simulcast rights on all games. I thought we would at least get rid of the delayed game on Sunday.

Plus showing local teams locally on FTA like the AFL does, not sure how this would work with Sydney though.

No mention of games being at the same time in every state. I imagine fans in NT, SA, WA, and Victoria can expect to still wait until 11pm to see the game on Channel Nine.

No mention of next year's World Cup. I'm assuming another year of mediocre coverage on Fox Sports is in line.

Terrible deal for the fans. Just terrible. Nothing good to mention except for the $. It's the same old deal with inflated cash.

I actually had my hopes up too...

I understand people are a bit pissed about the make up of the deal and itself, but jeez the dollar value achieved for just the TV rights is pretty amazing.

Consider how much more the networks are paying for far less content in comparison the to the AFL. It confirms Rugby League is the most valuable sport in the country.

Gyngell said they will be shown on GEM like they are now

And their attitude of "we won the rights, we'll do what we want" signifies that perfectly Timbo.

But its 1 billion dollars. you should be cheering. blah blah blah.

Even though you're being sarcastic you're right. The huge influx of money will do much much more for the game than more live games or an equal distribution of FTA slots.

For my beloved Rugby League, the money will do wonders. That's what we should all be thankful for.

The Northern Territory gets the very same coverage as QLD and NSW on the Imparja network, which broadcasts extensively into Western Queensland.

As to the rest of Aus, the coverage of the three games on GEM is superior as it is in HD, and at the same times.
