Its more than live football, its accepting something that is inherently wrong, broken and a raw deal as great news because we got more money out of it.
And yes i really like my football.
Or he could be alluding to the fact that for less money than the AFL we are getting a lot less in return and Channel nine effectively controlling our game for the next 5 years.
This.
Watching fumbleball get a better deal each time is a f**king disgrace. I cant believe some of you are claiming this is better. f**king moronic on so many levels.

Can somebody shed some light on what the broadcast arrangements are for the Rugby League World Cup?

Is it deemed separate from the ARLC, therefore not covered by this broadcast deal?

Is it something that is negotiated by the IRLF?
The debacle over the television rights for the 2000 World Cup (which lost money in part because the NRL had bundled rights as part of their domestic deal with Nine that the tournament was counting on selling) sorted once and for all that the World Cup is not the ARLC's to sell. It's a RLIF property.

$185m per season cash. Assuming a potential maximum audience of 17.5m Australians, that means 9 and fox are paying over $10.50 per year for each person who is capable of watching a TV for about 262 hours (11 days) of viewing per annum. The olympics cost $120m and looks set to cost 9 about $20m in losses even after splitting the deal with foxtel. (http://www.theaustralian.com.au/med...al-cushions-nine/story-e6frg996-1226439836049) Sure it wasn't prime time telecast, but this is a regular, long time deal that easily exceeds the olympic deal. It is in some degree 9 and foxtels bread and butter. I think it is a good $ outcome. You have to bargain off some rights to get a war chest that should secure the future of the clubs, development and promotion of the game (costs offset on top of the deal)

How they spend the money is the key. If they go blow $10 on a couple of players like AFL did to get Folou and Hunt, then bag them out full time. If they spend it on grass roots, country football and secure the existing franchises, while destroying AFL in Western Sydney and GC along the way... Then it is war chest spent well. The fact they got rid of the first/last rights shows they want a clean start for the next contract too.

I hate 9 and their delayed games. I hate the Broncofest that is Friday night. I hate Foxtel, purely for being the News LTD branch that divided the game in the first place. I love the idea that at the end of this contract RL is completely free.

I wonder what it would cost to start up a FTA TV network of its own.

Secure the future of clubs by ensuring they get as little FTA coverage as possible...

Sounds like a plan!

Winge winge winge...

If you're so caring about the game then get off your *rse and buy a season ticket membership and go to the games. Then you can watch it add free!!! AND live!!!

Not to mention that you'd be contributing to your club financially so they are less dependant on the TV deal in the first place.

If you're going to sit there, contribute nothing to the clubs, and claim that NRL is a "tv sport" then the league will be dependant on tv money. When negotiating time comes around that doesn't play well into your hands.

The more revenue the NRL gets from all avenues, the better position it is in to negotiate.

But I doubt many of you get it.

Go back to complaining.

Channel 9 and Fox have had the deck stacked in their favour ever since SL due to the first and last rights arrangement. They were never giving that up without significant compensation.

Oh wait, they did. The games shown situation is really no worse than before. They practically gave up their advantage for this deal AND we got them to pay twice as much for the privelege. Fixed scheduling is the cherry on top.

The NRL has been a code in repair in this country ever since SL. Not everything gets fixed at once.

The game will be hugely better off from now on. Stop with the tantys.

1 live game a week on free to air in 2012 is a f**king joke.

To have that for the next 5 years is disgraceful.

That is my biggest gripe. For five more years we have ONE live game on channel 9. ONE.
IC are a joke...bring back Gallop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok maybe not

I live in Melbourne, I am an interstate member of the Sharks and have travelled up to Sydney on 5 occasions this season to see their home games (including last weekend over Souths). I also frequently go to AAMI Park for storm games.

I contribute a lot of money to the Sharks and the game - I just want to see a fair deal for the game and the clubs. Some clubs who get FTA so often gives them so much extra power in attracting fans and dollars from sponsors it is not funny. Until the NRL rectifies this one massive glare, I will not be happy with the TV deal.

Apart from extra money, what has the NRL actually achieved with this deal that was different to the last one? NOTHING!

the extra cash will see the grants soon macth the salary cap

a win for clubs

Broncos have 75% of their games on FTA... Gives them a bigger audience, allows them to get better sponsorship deals...

Sharks had 3...

This will continue - a loss of most clubs.

But of course, you wouldn't give a shit about clubs working on equal playing fields at all would you?

Speaking of HD. Is there going to be anywhere in the country where analogue will still be in use come start of next season? Where I am it'd due to be switched off in November

Fox Sports has secured internet protocol TV (IPTV) rights for the five games it will broadcast – both live and catch-up – and has the rights to develop a tablet product, as it had for the Olympics. Those offerings will be available only to Foxtel subscribers who buy the Fox Sports package.

A shame a company like Fetch TV didn't make a play for the IPTV rates. Much cheaper product ($19.95 a month) and they would benefit greatly from the product. Would save people being butt-f**ked by Foxtel on the essential basic package just so they could watch sport.

So basically the game will continue to be dictated to by a tv network with the only difference being they paid more money to control it? Money which will mostly go into players and their managers pockets.

The more things change the more they stay the same.......

Another money merkin.

Get f**ked. We just sold out for more money
The loss of first/last bid rights is not a good thing if channel 9 will continue to get the right anyways.
Its been 15 years since super league and we are still in bed with these f**king merkins. "oh but in 5 years" in 5 years what? We will sign with channel 9/fox once again for more money and nothing will change then.

I Wonder if the native americans were all like "But we got these blankets"
