It did. https://twitter.com/MediaweekAUS

End up with 2.55 million from the metro markets rather than the 2.3 odd the article mentioned with increases in the Sydney market and I think the Melbourne market bumped up to over 800k. So all in all the NRL has ended up with around 4.106 million with the revised figures and NZ taken into account. Keep in mind ratings are not an exact science and I believe the non East Coast capitals are a little over sampled but there you have it.

Of more concern is why can't we crack 1,000,000 in Sydney for the GF...

The public holiday on the Monday means 90% of people watch it either at BBQ's or pubs etc. The ratings system doesn't allow for more then a household watching the game.

The true numbers for both GF's could be double what the figures say. This is what we have sadly. So have to make do

I tend to agree. I cannot believe only 4 million watched each game.

I watched the NRL game in a pub in Hobart. There were about 50 people watching the game and at least 20 were wearing Storm gear.

You would have to think there are literally 100000s of people watching both games in that environment.

I should have laid off the black zambuccas though. Bad move ....

3.8 million tune into Grand Final Nationally

NRL.com Mon, Oct 01, 2012 - 7:00 PM

The 2012 NRL Telstra Premiership Grand Final was the highest rating event on the Eastern Seaboard this weekend as more than 3.8 million Australian based viewers and a further 277,300 New Zealand based fans joined the record 82,976 crowd at ANZ Stadium to watch the Storm’s 14-4 win over the Bulldogs yesterday.

As well as attracting the highest attendance ever in the reconfigured ANZ Stadium, the match attracted a combined metro and regional peak Australian viewing audience of 4.65 million and averaged 3.867 million making it the highest rating NRL Grand Final since 2006 when the Broncos beat the Storm 15-8.

Across Australia’s five capital cities, the 2012 NRL Telstra Premiership Grand Final peaked at 2.993 million on Nine yesterday, averaging 2.551 million viewers (2011: 2.16 million) and a further 1.316 million (2011: 1.15million) across regional Australia on the WIN/ NBN networks.

Sydney led the way with 1.01 million viewers (83.1% audience share), followed by a massive 803,000 in Melbourne (59%) and 600,000 in Brisbane (70.5%).

In New Zealand 235,100 viewers watched on subscription television live through Sky Television and a further 42,200 watched delayed free to air coverage on Prime.

“It was a fantastic day for Rugby League and the number of people in Australia and around the world who watched yesterday’s NRL Telstra Premiership Grand Final shows just how big the event has become,” Interim NRL Chief Executive, Mr Shane Mattiske, said today.

“The event gets bigger each year and with a record crowd at the match as well, I would strongly encourage fans to buy memberships so they can ensure they are part of the excitement week in week out through the season, as well as at Grand Final time.”

There is only a few thousand homes in aus that actually have the ratings system connected to their TVs. Would be very inaccurate...

of course it's inaccurate.

but it's the system used to decide the fate of programs and formulate advert rate cards.

those folks interested in the Swans Grand Final in Sydney would've been huddled around 'dozens' of lcds of the pubs in the eastern suburbs.

others who didn't give a shit either way would've have carried on their normal routine of a saturday afternoon. I'd reckon not many folks are at home with the tele on of a saturday.

Melbourne didn't have a public holiday today so many more potential viewers at home. The NRL led into primetime on a sunday night. Much of the sample tv sets would've been switched on anyway.

Storm v Warriors would be the NRL's wet dream for Australasian totals. Syd + Mel + NZ + Regionals would be 4 million alone.

At those idiots saying it's not a big enough sample size. You do realise a PM was sacked a couple of years ago based on polls done with smaller sample sizes than that. So if you can sack a PM based on what a few thousand people say, then you can decide ratings on what a few thousand households do.

lol the sample size is fine its just not a good representation of what Australia is into because of the size of regional NSW and QLD compared to Perth and Adelaide.

National olitical polls are, at most, 1500 people sampling about 16000000 voters. the margin of error for such a tiny sample is about 2%,

Sport would always rate over masterchef etc yet with this ancient process it doesn't show. The problem is 1 is watched at home the other in groups. I don't see why we can't have logins like netbank and fill in the form. Sure it would take longer to come through but would be more accurate.

Sports is gold to the TV stations because its the one thing people will tune into to see live. You can't pirate it either.

3500 boxes across Australia's 5 capital cities is a such a ridiculously small sample size.

we were pretty happy with the accuracy last year when it said we rated better!
we need to suck it up. you win some you loose some. The main point is that its close enough that the notion of 'national' is subjctive... no of states vs total of population.

There isn't many people on both side of politics who thought that was a rational decision, however.

The AFL rated 991k for the 2005 Swans grand final.

What's more disconcerting? The AFL being within 400k of the NRL for a bandwagon game (which will drop off next year like it always has) or the fact that the AFL lost 382,000 of those bandwagon viewers?

Why aren't you saying that the AFL should be concerned that the Storm in Melbourne outrated the Swans in Sydney...?

Why are you not concerned with the low numbers for NRL in Sydney? 798,000 for NRL in Sydney. 1,406,000 for AFL in Melbourne. For the presentations that is.

957,000 v 1,331,000 for the game.

If ever there was a case for less Sydney teams this is it.
