The ideal outcome would be for the hedge funds to take over, maintain the contract and clean out the rot at nine. If that were to happen it would be a remarkable stroke of good luck.
Perhaps they would even deveop a taste for league while they are there.

If nine go into receivership and a new company is formed would the first and last rights deal with the NRL have been voided anyway?

They'll be the same company. It's just that the secured creditors will take ownership and probably try to sell it in the future unless a buyer can be found in the meantime.

the mezz debt holders aren't likely to allow that to happen without some debt to equity swap and the hedge funds holding the top level debt holders don't want the mezz level lenders to have any equity at all if it comes to debt to equity swap. oops

Why did our new u beaut commission sign a new deal with nine???? Reading the papers today(business section) nine is in all sorts of problems and is a real chance of going into receivership.

The word has been around for month that the network is in real strife,so why sign a big deal when the other networks were talking the same sort of money and probably in a lot better shape.

Maybe they are all in trouble and if that is the case they will bring the NRL down with them. Interesting times ahead, but it seem a crazy move to sign anything with nine at present

There are contingency deals in place with Nine's creditors that will still fund the NRL regardless of what happens with Nine.

Because they pay 90 mil upfront and if they can't pay the rest you can just take your business elsewhere.

If that hedge fund takes control of Nine and wipes out the debt I think the station's in the clear anyway.

If they go under and the NRL "take their business elsewhere" they'll be 33% less FTA competition. It'll be a much worse deal (as will the AFLs next one).

I said at the time and I stand by it, I would have taken 800m from Ten for 4 live FTA games.

So would have I BunniesMan, if that was what they offered.

Unfortunately they didn't offer that.

They aren't going to "go under" they're going to keep operating because they're worth far more as a going concern. The actual business makes money but the debt repayments are what forces them into losses.

800m for all of the games, with a promise to show 4 on FTA nationwide and live and to onsell the rest.

And while we would have gotten about 200 million less in cash than we ended up getting I see live Rugby League as an advertisement.

The 3 extra live games on FTA we would have got every week for 5 years are worth more than 200 million in my opinion.

This!
Let 9 go down the gurgler and senior debt holders lose the lot, continue as a going concern and retain its major ratings producer and it will be worth more down the line.

it has been reported on radio and in the SMH that $800 million is incorrect

Fox were also unwilling to buy the remaining games as they were in dud slots

It's disappointing that 10 didn't get the rights but their deal was compromised the minute Fox abandoned ship. Fox became more concerned with protecting what they had rather than simulcast and managed to get 9 to do more heavy lifting. It's just the nature of the process. It was also speculated by the FIN that 10's deal also covered internet and mobile rights which they wanted in order to boost their new social media arm - so the NRL would have been knocked out of the current round of negotiations.

When you add all of that up and then you think of all the people and organisations in rugby league complaining about a lack of funding for the past 15 years, it makes sound logical sense why they went with 9 & Foxtel.

With $925 million cash in the bank and further $$$ from the naming rights, mobile rights, internet rights and New Zealand rights, it was the right move needed for the current situation.

No coverage of the junior kiwis v junior roos test at the weekend. Disgraceful.

Let's hope the recently-signed tv deal includes quality curtain raisers such as this.
