I know most of you don't like the guy but personally I think he can be... something... I don't want to use the word 'answer' because he will never be Johns but...

I think, per usual, we are expecting too much from our halfback. The whole team is playing crap so it's even harder for a newbie halfback to do his job. His defense is pretty good, his kicking was okay and his passing looks good too. Sure he isn't organizing our team like a onfield general but given the chance I think he'll be a great option for us. Furthermore, he is young and local.

Personally I would have love to have seen this year:

1. Boyd
6. Mullen
7. Kidley
9. Bedsy
14. Roberts

So for 15 to 20 minutes a game, Bedsy goes to the bench, Kidley into hooker and Roberts into the halves. OR even see Roberts straight into the hooking role as an impact sub. A season or so to get used to first grade would have done him a world of good. Pity Kidley got injured...

I know Pearce or Wallace are much better options. However, do they fit in with the HSG philosophy? I would love to have either here as well but I think everyone is being a little too harsh on Roberts lately...

My 2 cents.:D

I am at a deadend with the half situation. It is all guess work right now. Roberts is too green to gauge yet. He has the same disease all our halves have had for the last 6 years. No framework to get comfortable in. All off the cuff stuff.

He is copping it everywhere at the moment. When it relaxes and plays his natural game he looks great but when he tries to organize the team he looks rubbish. Mullo should be running the team anyway as the senior half, his played his worse month of football these last 4 weeks and that's contributed to making Roberts look worse. The last two weeks Roberts has shown glimpses of his ability especially running the ball and had Boyd scored yesterday and Adams held onto the ball from Roberts it may have been a different result. Mullen also was rubbish when we had a chance in that second half to grab the lead with poor pass to Wes and his rushed kick on 3rd tackle all in the attacking 20m.

I don't know where our answer in the halves is going to come from. Mullen really just needs an organiser with a short kicking game inside him. It doesn't sound like too much to ask for, really. Roberts could be it, but I haven't seen it yet. He does run the ball well, though. Has shown a lot of tenacity in defence for a little bloke, too.

He excelled in the 10 back at school. Was captain of the first XV.
If I'm reading this correctly, you think we should make him an NRL 5/8th because he was a good schoolboy fly-half in union?

At least you had a reason, I suppose.

Mullen is no good in the 7. Gagai has been groomed far more recently as a fullback and then a centre. I'd suggest that is where he'll be played. By the sounds of things, he would be lost as shit if we threw him in the 6. Wouldn't help Mullens game, either.

Gagai is sounding like the next Inglis to me, f**k there's some expectations on him!

The Broncs had a young inexperienced back line and he couldn't even make that, it just makes me wonder..

As far as Tyrone Roberts, to me he just seems limited and he doesn't excel in any particular skill. Dureau was better.

He played all his junior league in the 6 as well.
It wasn't until the Broncos signed him they chucked him on the wing in the under 20s, then fullback. He went on to become junior Kanagaroos fullback the last two years. Best player in both series mind you.
He'll do well in any position in the backline but I would like to see him in the 6.

Fair enough, but I think you'll find he'll rightly be played at fullback (possibly this week due to Origin) and centre. Our halves arn't fantastic, but our centre situation is dire. Gagai will have been recruited to be Akus long term partner in crime. I'd bet a sizable amount on it. I can't refute you either way on Gagai's merit as a 6, I had never heard of it until now. I will be surprised if that eventuates. I'll be surprised if Bennett ever plays Mullen at halfback again.

In fact, is that you, Dane? You are new around here, arn't you? Lol.

He started the 2011 season but then got injured round 3 I think it was.
He can fend like Inglis but he's also good on his feet like Hodges.

Go to the 6.55 mark. Cronk puts up a bomb. Does he not remind you of a Hodges?

I want to give Roberts at least until the end of the season.

He has a dig in defence so he gets the nod from me to be given a proper opportunity. I can cop a guy finding his feet if he is willing to put his body on the line and not be a liability in the meantime.

Yeah no doubt Wayne bought him down to be a strike centre.
Wayne always wants one strike center in his team.
Thats why he bought Gasiner back to the Dragons.
He doesn't care about the other center as long as he can defend.
He often had David Stagg playing center at the Broncos.

Mullen being better in 6 is a myth. The only thing that improves is his running game he's gone backwards rapidly with his other jobs. People got super excited because his defence has improved and he scored a couple of trys, but seriously he's our senior half and how many try assists/lb assists does he have? Move him back to 7 where he's just as bad and have a look at Boyd at 6. We couldn't go any worse than we are currently.

Why would we f**k around with our 1, 6, 7, 9 unless we have to due to injuries? Mullo always has been and always will be a better five-eighth than halfback, he doesn't seem comfortable with organising the team. We need to give Tyrone a decent shot at the seven without saying "we've given him three games and he's shit, lets try someone else."

And most importantly we should never move Boyd from fullback. Ever. His last two games have been his best two games - he's getting more involved, but lets move him to five-eighth. Brilliant idea.
