red bear, that sucks mate.. hope you and your family are doing ok..

i always try to look for the positives, and in this case at the very least you got the opportunity to say goodbye..

That's something I really regret. I was overseas for the deaths and funerals of both of my grandparents on my father's side. I wasn't close with either of them, but it still would have meant something to me to see them one last time and say goodbye.

My grandmother on my mother's side also passed away before I was able to say goodbye. She was in a hospice for a week or two beforehand, but I'd volunteered to babysit my youngest brother who my parents thought wouldn't be able to handle the situation. Really saddens me that I never got to thank her for everything she'd done for me and say goodbye.

my grandfather is my hero. above anyone else in the world i admire him & his deeds and think if i can turn out anywhere near the man he is, i'll be doing ok..

sad that his mind is slipping away now, i'm already missing the conversations we used to have..

You had the conversations. They'll never really leave you or him.

Death of my grandfather was the reason I moved back to Melbourne. I never got to say goodbye. I'm glad I did, since then I've lost my grandmother and my godmother won't be around much longer.

On that note, I've spent a few hours after work the past two weeks visiting with my godmother. So far parking has cost me over $100. It's ridiculous. Your loved one is dying, let's charge you $10 per hour to visit them. merkins.

Hospital parking?

I know it's a good way to make money for them, but come on - like you said, a loved obe is critically ill, and they charge you an arm for parking? It's a disgrace.

If I owned a hospital - you can be sure as hell I'd be charging. Not the fact I want to be heartless, it's the fact it regulated parking and control for the area. Otherwise, any random could part for the entire day and take a train or bus elsewhere and it lowers competition for spots.

Instead of thinking they're being heartless, look at the logistics of said decision.

I never said they were being heartless.

In fact, I even went as far to claim I understand why they do it.

But the fees they charge are ridiculous, and people who are grieving don't need any extra hassle.

If you disagree with THAT, then I will suggest you are indeed heartless.

Oh, dude. I know that point. I used to be at the hospital week-in-week-out for hospital appointments in my youth/teens. My parents were spending anywhere from $15-30 a week in hospital parking. For some parents, they were so desperate they'd park at in Parramatta park and walk up.

Guess it all depends on the hospital. Visiting my grandmother at Manly hospital cost nothing, but the hospital is nowhere near town so they don't worry about that. St George private costs a bomb, not sure about the public one.

it all boils down to revenue.

unfortunately hospitals require funding, and a LOT of funding, to keep them running..

what the government provides is only a part of it.. health funds do provide some as well, but they need more opportunities to source funding, and parking is a key part of it as it's a lot of real estate that they can generate a return from..

it may seem heartless at times, but at the same time i'd rather pay for parking at a good hospital and know that my loved ones are receiving the best possible care and can get what they need when they need it from the hospital, as opposed to parking for free at a hospital that feels like it's about to fall over..

That's it.

I don't begrudge them charging for parking, but they simply must reduce the costs to patients and visotopes. It's remarkably expensive to park there to visit a loved one for a few hours.

Westmead is the worst hospital in NSW by a country mile and they charge a motza...

When my triplet boys were born they were kept in the neonatal icu and special care for 5 weeks in total at the mater. A 5 day parking ticket was about $100. So we would have spent over $500 on parking. They only offer concessions if you earn below a certain amount, we weren't eligible and we don't earn that much.

Shane walker the ex broncos player had also had a baby in the same ward, he offered for us to use his house to park our car. We didn't take up the offer but was a really nice gesture.
