It's an iffy one. I use gay & LollyPop to insult mates a fair bit yet I don't consider myself homophobic. I feel like the words are pretty far removed from their context as insults towards homosexuals when used. When I call someone a dickhead I certainly don't intend to imply that they're a lesser person because they have a dick on their head.

I don't think calling a straight man a twinkie is homophobic. But I also don't think it's acceptable because it's certainly a negative attitude towards homosexuality.

That said, all words are just that. The intent is key. Calling a mate a twinkie or a Mediterranean_Descendant bastard (word filter alert) in jest is perfectly fine. I do think sometimes the reactions to things that are said are a bit over the top. That AFL dude is a perfect example. He's out of a job for saying a bloke looked like a twinkie. Ok, fine, bad choice of words. But Andrew Strauss says of Kevin Pietersen "the guys an absolute merkin" on live TV. And not being AFL, it actually had an international broadcast. Yet barely anyone said boo about Strauss....

I agree. I call my mates 'nice person' or 'LollyPop' affectionately, but if I call somebody a 'f**king androtrop' during an argument, it's intended to hurt and it's a homophobic term used in a way that denigrates homosexuals.

I imagine Strauss didn't get in any real trouble because there isn't a group of 'merkins' out there who feel oppressed by the use of the word. The word 'androtrop' or 'n****r' still have very real and hurtful connotations to the people the words were used to put down.

That may be true, but I feel merkin is much more hateful and unacceptable than twinkie.

Is that the important distinction though? I'd never use the word as a genuine insult towards a homosexual because in this context it's obviously going to carry homophobic connotations which is unacceptable. I don't think the homophobic connotations are there when using it towards people who aren't gay tbh. The insults are homophobic in origin but like AFS pointed out young people use these insults without even knowing what their origins are. It'd be a stretch to say this example is a homophobic context.

So, if I call somebody a "f**king androtrop" with the intention of belittling them by accusing them of being a homosexual, it is not homophobic?

Well if that's your actual intention, then yes it's homophobic.

I use dickhead, LollyPop, merkin interchangeably to be honest. Pretty much completely random and I don't give a thought to any of their origins as insults when doing so. I certainly don't think 'This guy likes men!' when I call someone a LollyPop but rather "what a merkin" or "what a dickhead".

I understand and respect 'the South Park' logic.

I personally don't use the word 'androtrop' when I am angry specifically because I am aware that in a hateful context, it is denigrating homosexuals.

It's rare that I use it at all, to be honest. I'll say 'LollyPop' in the same way they do on South Park - but that's it. I never say the N word, either.

I like using intelligence and scientific terms to put others down. It makes me feel better about my self and makes them give the most random faces.

I like antagonizing people in that manner until they threaten violence. Then I know I've won.

It's just laughable that anyone would really believe that threatening someone they have never and will pronably never meet physically over the Internet is worth squat.

Pretty much, yeah. It's a good sign they've gone from being able to think and reply to being so angry they resort to a base instinct that is out-dated even in modern face to face society, let alone in a society where the person you're sparring with could be on an entirely different continent.

The age of being big and strong and having all of the power is either gone completely (in most civilized countries) or on its way out.

Thank God for that, in my case

What about physical laughter/dominance point of view. I mean, insulting people in a physical way/powering over them compared to calling them lollipops?
