So is 40 job applications a month to much for the bludgers?

I would have been doing more than that at the start of the year but when you have qualifications and more then happy to move interstate/seas it isn't that difficult. WHen you are a dullard that only went to year 10 and dont want to move outof your parents house the list shortens a fair bit

I was talking to my dad about that this morning. As someone who gets the job of hiring for this side of town it hurts my head.

As it is I can get 90+ resumes a day for 1 position. And about 87 of them aren't suitable. It's going to quadruple. Bah.

What about for those that live in remote areas?

While I agree that they should have to work/volunteer for their money, I don't think anyone did the maths on 40 per months.

My sister has been on the dole for 5 years. There's nothing wrong with her, she's just a lazy merkin with a terrible attitude. The other day she told me she has enough "credits" from centerlink that she can earn $1000 a fortnight without it effecting her dole payments.

She gets these "credits" by doing courses that they pay for...

She makes me so mad.

yet put somone who has been been laid off/made redundant, first time unemployed since they were 15 and would kill for a job ASAP into the centrelink office who has a legit case and getting money out of them will be as difficult as humanly possible.

Small business are gonna get pretty fed up with 40,000 phone calls a week wasting their time.

I agree, they haven't really thought is through. They need to create jobs like they said they would, not waste the time of small business owners.

The jobs just aren't there.

I hate the term dole bludgers being applied as a blanket term for everybody who is unemployed.

The concept of people who gleefully sit at home and enjoy this 'free money' being in some kind of majority is a myth perpetuated by the Liberal Party to frighten hard working Aussies who don't know any better. Very few of my unemployed friends were living a life of luxury or even enjoying being unemployed. $450 a fortnight is hardly enough to live off of.

As somebody who was unemployed for eight months when living in Newcastle and who was desperate for work, I was going out of my mind trying to survive on that budget. It wasn't fun.

This. It's lazy policy making. Bludgers can still bludge - they'll just apply for 40 jobs that are out of their league instead of 16.

There just aren't the jobs in some area. You'll have people in rural NSW applying to jobs in Darwin and Perth that they have no intention of taking (or hope of getting) just to meet an arbitrary quota.

You've lived a charmed life if that was the lowest point in your life.

The 6 months before they give unemployed people any money is the bullshit part and its only for under 30's. Make no sense shouldn't it be the other way around?

You would think so. Give them six months to find their feet and get a job before labelling them as bludgers and making them starve in the streets.

And if you don't have your shit together by 30 then you probably don't deserve as much help as a kid who left school worked for a while then lost their job

I'm just glad I turned 30 while I was here. Life back in Oz would be a lot more daunting if I were 29.

no job, no car, no home, future not looking great and was about 25kg overweight.

Was in higher spirits after i had my heart attack

I'm not sure how having to go into a Centrelink office ranks as a lower point than any of the above, but people have their own priorities, I guess.

Well, that isn't quite the same as going into Centrelink being the lowest point of your life :p

I can see how all of those factors do make for one hell of a low, though.

Ebola is one of those things that can spread very fast if it gets into an airport.

Agree it burns quickly, but not that quickly. I still don't want it floating about...
