Under fire: Knights fans unload on Danny Wicks
BY ROBERT DILLON

A FEW months ago he was the toast of Newcastle after his memorable, runaway try against the Roosters.

Now heavyweight forward Danny Wicks rates as the most maligned player in the Knights line-up and a popular scapegoat after Sunday's loss to the Raiders at Canberra Stadium.

Wicks and Knights coach Brian Smith have attracted heavy fire from supporters after the 38-18 defeat that left Newcastle in a precarious position with just three rounds left before the play-offs.

Fans on The Herald's website and other forums hammered Smith for dropping wholehearted toiler Matt White from the team that played Canberra to include Wicks, who had missed the previous three games with an ankle injury.

Smith said yesterday that people were entitled to their opinions but felt it would be unfair to single out any player after such a one-sided result.

He said "faceless people who make outrageous and outlandish comments" on website forums were not worth worrying about.

"Everybody's open to criticism," Smith said.

"If you're an NRL player or coach, people have got the right to criticise . . . you can pull things out and hammer anybody if you want.

"But it is a team game and, as a group, we'll survive and flourish together, or we'll suffer, depending on whether we win or we lose.

"That's how good football teams handle themselves."

Smith said Wicks was far from Newcastle's worst player against Canberra.

The former St George Illawarra prop played 37 minutes off the bench, gaining 68 metres in attack and making 11 effective tackles of the 16 he attempted.

The Raiders already had two tries on the scoreboard and were on the front foot by the time the 22-year-old entered the game.

"Wicksy and Richie Fa'aoso put a bit of spring in our step when they came on," Smith said.

"They made a real difference in terms of our go-forward.

"The reason we lost the game wasn't down to any one player. Even if it was, it certainly wasn't down to Danny Wicks."

Newcastle had won three successive games before the loss to Canberra and four of five games since White was promoted from reserve grade during an injury crisis.

But the return of Ben Cross, Jesse Royal and Wicks from injury meant that White, who has agreed to a one-year contact with the Gold Coast for next season, was squeezed out of Newcastle's squad.

"Whitey did a good, tidy job for us, and we weren't disappointed with him, but the calibre of the team we played on the weekend was ridiculously different to the three we had played previously," Smith said.

"The coaches had been saying for three weeks that we weren't happy with a number of aspects in our games."

Smith pointed out that Newcastle has been competitive in most games this season, despite the fact that senior forwards Steve Simpson and Cross had played only 10 and six games respectively.

"The improvement that we've made as a team this year largely on the back of the younger players in our team our forward pack has had an awful lot to do with it," Smith said.

The coach acknowledged that the 118-kilogram Wicks was still a work in progress.

"He's like a lot of players in our team," he said.

"He's got improvements to make, he's done some good things this year, and he's got a way to go before we're dominating teams."

As for criticism on websites, Smith dismissed it as irrelevant.

"I'm not disappointed at all," he said. "I pay no attention to it."

The Herald was unable to contact Wicks yesterday.

Wicks retained his place on the bench yesterday when the Knights named their team to play North Queensland in a do-or-die home game on Saturday night.

Back-rower Chris Houston will miss his first game of the season after being rested. Cooper Vuna, Akuila Uate and Marvin Karawana have also been omitted.

Smith has reinstated Adam MacDougall, Wes Naiqama, Scott Dureau and Chris Bailey to his squad. He has also named Mark Taufua as 18th man, but there is a chance the rugged bench forward could play.

"We've got a number of guys who need to be cleared medically, so we'll see how it goes," Smith said.

That is classic.

Seriosuly faceless. I know alot of people who would tell Wicks to his face that he doesn't deserve to be in first grade.

Smithy just dismised Whites job as tidy. What the f*ck does he call what Wicks does then?

In 2001 i was on the old world of RL website talking up the Knights chances and got into a running battle all year with some very knowlegable Parra fans - who turned out to be Smith's assistant coaches.
I doubt he still does it, but in 2001 Smith and all his assistants were forum junkies.
I had a big argument with a guy about how i thought Mad dog was as good as Eric Grothe and it turned out i was arguing with the guy who played beside Grothe for Parra, NSW and Aus - Steve Ella.

So, which one of our coaching staff is Karma?

 I told you , I'm Michael Hagan

That article shows just how arrogant and out of touch Brian Smith really is.

Tell you what Smithy, make your email address or your infamous cell phone you send your thousand text messages to the players public, and fans will not become just faceless people on a forum and I'm sure many will tell Wicks and you what we really think to your face.

Idiot.

Wicks could be anything. The guy is a freak of nature.
I'm starting to doubt he will ever reach his potential, but if Smith gets him up to near that level he will be the star of our side.

It's not the fact Wicks had a good game and what not.

It's the fact White was in great form and playing as our top front rower and got dropped for someone who came back from injury, isnt fit AND hasnt proven himself in a game this year.

Are you serious? I'd be very surprised if there is a coach in the NRL who wouldn't feel the same way. Some may express it a little more tactfully on the record. To be honest anyone influenced by what people say on fan sites shouldn't be anywhere near an NRL coaching position.

One of Smith's best qualities is that he does what he thinks is right without being influenced by public perception. If he gets it wrong too often he deserves to be criticised and vice versa. If he were to let himself be infuenced by what he thought would be popular he should be sacked without delay imho.

Note that this is completely different to absorbing opinions from his coaching staff, his players and trusted, well-informed people close to the team. From what I've read, Smith takes plenty of advice on board from knowledgeable people. How closely he listens, or is prepared to be influenced is harder to judge. The best people in decision making positions are flexible but strong in making the final calls. I've no doubt Smith would be the type to always back his final judgement; how much he lets it be modified by those he consults only he would really know.

Dropping White and replacing him with Wicks explains exactly why Smith has never coached a premiership side. He trys to outsmart himself. There is no way Wicks earnt that spot over White. Forget weather that would alter the result, think about the message it sends to the other players.

Well I hope you are reading this Smithy or the journos - because we happen to think Wicks should've been on the end of the boot out the door rather than White (if someone had to get booted). I also wonder if Smithy is telling fibs with 118kg when we were reliably told 126kg last week...

Anyway it is now perfect timing for this (courtesy of Pumba) - in the same vein as UATE FOR FIRST GRADE!

So Smith doesn't drop players because of us. Woopty doo, he clearly doesn't drop them on form either. I'm gonna get on the fog and horn to Japan and tell them we have an extremely rare landfaring whale for them to study.

We're not about to play a grand final. We're desperately tyring to make the eight. Smith actually has a great record at this.

Doesn't look like he'll add to it this year though. :(

No we're not about to play a grand final, yes we are desperately trying to make the eight, All the more reason to selecthe best 17 you've got, if you think Wicks is one of that 17 well good on you.

Post 16 suggests you think that. If not then please accept my appology.

I wouldn't pick Wicks. Apology accepted.

Taufua and White have both been more impressive than him. Where we might differ is that I don't think it's quite as major an issue as you do. I find it hard to believe that the result would have been hugely different on Sunday with White instead of Wicks.

I said nothing about Wicks in post 16. I was replying to one of your posts in which you made assertions as to why Smith hasn't won a premiership. Aside from grand finals (which we agree isn't relevant at the moment) his coaching record is fantastic. His week-to-week selections can't have been too bad over the years. Of course that doesn't mean he isn't making a mistake with Wicks.
