USA to play Greece in Vegas
USA are set to follow up their end of year tour to South Africa by hosting Greece in men's and women's internationals as part of the NRL's Las Vegas rugby league festival.

The nations will play a double header on Friday, February 28 before the quadruple header at Allegiant Stadium the following day featuring a Super League premiership match between Wigan and Warrington, two NRL matches - Raiders v Warriors and Panthers v Sharks - and a women's international between England and Australia.

“Competing against Greece presents a significant opportunity for our players to test their skills,” said USA Hawks coach Sean Rutgerson, whose side will also travel to South Africa in December for a two-game series.

“This fixture is crucial for offering valuable experiences and growth opportunities to our homegrown talent, challenging them beyond the domestic environment.

"Additionally, the fixture supports our strategic goal of developing and expanding our domestic player pool, ensuring our competitiveness on the international stage, and contributing to the overall health and strength of our domestic competitions.”

Rutgerson added: “We can't wait to build on the Las Vegas event from last year. The support and excitement keep building.”

USA women’s head coach, Ady Cooney, noted: “We’re super excited to play Greece. It’s going to be a great test for us and we’ll get to see how we stack up against a team that’s been competing regularly.”

Greece men’s head coach, Steve Georgallis, commented: “We’re really looking forward to travelling to Las Vegas. We are planning a training run with the newly formed Los Angeles Roosters, which our main sponsor Nick Politis is also involved with.

“With many of our players near retirement age, this is a great opportunity to have a look at our next generation of players coming through. We will be using a mixture of heritage and domestic players and have also had some that reside in the USA reaching out to us about being involved.”

The Hawks will visit Pretoria, playing fixtures on 4 December 2024 at the Harlequins Rugby Club (kick off 6pm local time) and three days later at Grizzlies Rugby Club (kick off 4pm). In their only previous meeting, the South Africa Rhinos played against USA and Jamaica in 2011 in a World Cup qualifying tournament in New Jersey; USA winning that clash 40-4.

Both nations will only select players from their domestic competitions, and the hosts will be using the matches as trials for their participation in the inaugural 2025 World Series, which will see the final qualification places decided for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.

“We are looking forward to an interesting and exciting competition,” commented SARL president Dr Frans Erasmus. “This tour is not only a historic milestone but also a crucial step in increasing awareness and development of rugby league in both South Africa and the United States.”

Rhinos coach, Fanie Bredenhann, added: “Having the opportunity to host the Hawks has created an exciting vibe among club coaches and players already, and they are a great help to scouting and development.”

With the USA Young Hawks having recently made their debut in the U19s European Championship, and the NRL and Super League announcing details of their latest trip to Las Vegas next March, this is a further building block for USARL.

“This will provide more than just a game of rugby league for us, it underscores our commitment and dedication to the ongoing improvement and strategic advancement of our national programme,” said USARL chair, Matt Goschnick. “By fostering these opportunities it will help challenge, develop and grow players, teams, coaches, and support personnel which will elevate and enhance our domestic competitions, development pathways and competitiveness.”

Rutgerson, who played for South Africa in the 2000 World Cup, noted: “It's a great opportunity for us. We are working hard to build out our international calendar and this is a great start. We are looking forward to finishing the year on a high note.”

USA should be playing as one of the games in Alligant instead of playing an hour out of Vegas in front of 2k people.

How are these internationals paid for? IRL have no money and these games don't get any $$ from TV or gate.

Not sure about that in the short term but the NRL and SL should at least be promoting it and attending to boost it's relevance, popularity and gate takings. A fan day adjacent before the event...

If you want to get actual Americans in the stadium USA needs to be playing.

I don't want to start a new thread, hoping someone can answer ... does anyone have any idea how internationals involving emerging nations are funded ? USA v Greece, France V Ghana, Jamaica V Canada...etc how are flights, accommodation etc paid for ?

Amateurs aren't going to capture an audience mate, probably turn people away.
If the NFL came to Australia would it fill accor with curious Australians? Yes
If a team of Aussies playing Gridiron played at accor would it fill it? No

No one in America has heard of the NRL and they aren't going to watch a bunch of foreigners play a sport they've never heard of out of curiosity.

Americans only cheer for Americans, having USA as part of the event gives them a reason to attend and someone to cheer for.

Having said that, it doesn't matter how they fill the stadium just so long as it's full for the game shown on Fox Sports FTA channel.

Hey Yak, is there any mechanism for the runners up (Cali RL winners) to move into the game instead of Provo?

Potentially, that's what happened last year when Provo were disqualified for using too many Interchanges last year.

Looking at social media, most of the PCRL clubs are siding with Provo on this, so I'm not sure if the Bandidos would feel comfortable taking Provo's spot.

IMO, I feel like the USARL has made the wrong call here. Multiple clubs have confirmed what counted as an 'eligible player' was not shared until after the West Coast Final took place.

In Provo & URLA's mind they thought a player having a Green Card & thus a US residency would be sufficient, which in fairness is all the IRL require for a player to represent their country after 5 years.

Clearly there is fault by all parties here (which happens in volunteer organisations), they should just let the game happen & then make sure no one is under any illusion of the rules next year.

Agree, “play on”. I don’t want another split in the US just as things are looking up (again!).

TBH when reading the article I was thinking “fair enough” in regards to the Green Card players.

The US Association of Rugby League (USARL) wishes to inform its members and the Rugby League community that Utah Rugby League Association notified the Domestic Competitions Chair late Sunday of their decision to withdraw the Provo Broncos from the National Championship Game.

Prior to Utah’s withdrawal, the USARL made every reasonable attempt to ensure the fixture proceeded and worked diligently with DC & Utah Rugby League Association on behalf of the Provo Broncos. DC complied within the prescribed timeframes and Utah Rugby League did not despite receiving numerous extensions to provide proof of player eligibility. The Board granted a final extension with a deadline Sunday afternoon.

Utah Rugby League submitted information which was assessed based on the paperwork that was submitted against their team list in line with the rules and procedures followed, they were provided a list of eligible players for selection which exceeded the minimum requirement for a match to go ahead. Subsequently, Utah Rugby League Association informed USARL of their decision for the Provo Broncos to not participate in the fixture.

As a result, the board has awarded the 2024 Men’s National Championship to the DC Cavalry.

While the USARL is disappointed by Utah Rugby League’s decision to withdraw the Provo Broncos from the game, we look forward to the off-season during which time we will continue to evaluate and adapt our domestic competition rules to serve our teams and players in the best way possible and continue to build the great sport of rugby league here in the US.

_______

regardless of who's at fault, this is unfortunate and disappointing. I can see this reopening some fresh wounds between parties unfortunately.
