i'm impressed, the sharks have got quite a good team, despite playing no part in the bidding war. i guess it just shows how much depth there really is in the NRL

i just thought of something else - twice a season, we arent going to have a frontline kicker in the team (because of byes). i hope i get to play the chemical ali cup equivalent (not yet decided) of souths those weeks....

well i missed the boat due to not knowing the comp was back up and running .... which was probly enough for me to miss a few quality players - have 25 players and $580,000 left haha .... even bought a couple of injured players on spec

:? :( :? :( - grrrrrrr

but i think i'm still competitive .... and count your blessings if you don't cop the 3 pronged hooker attack from me like Round 1 when Melb have the bye

No. The game works as such, say you have Anasta and he scored 3 tries tries against parramatta in round 1 then you get 12 points for the 3 tries. And if you play him in the forwards and he gets 25 tackles and 15 hitups (total 40) then you get a forward try as well (4 points). Thus anasta would have scored 16 points for you. If they are not named then don't put them in your starting side (unless of course you have to, and believe me you will have to)

hope nobody believed the above, but since recruiting is now done

this is very wrong ..... forwards do not score tries (ie put the ball over the line) - forwards score "forward tries" only .... see FAQ in the help section if you don't believe me

let the Luke Priddis, Cameron Smith, Luke Ricketson, Chad Randall, Anthony Laffranchi tackling machine begin :!:

Oink !

Is that right? didn't play it really last year except for the Champions League (I had the Newtown Jets) which I was invited to and missed the initial draft which meant I had a lot of fringe players, my sole goal was to avoid the wooden spoon! Oh well, I will now know for other comps I am in what I must draft in the way of forwards. Anyway considering this here's a spreadsheet one of my mates at work made, 900 is the cutoff for an average of 40 per game, this spreadsheet was averaged out as if all players played 24 games.

Player Trys Tackles + Hitups Cost Positions
Danny Nutley 2 1274 297,000 Front Rower
Lance Thompson 3 1245 216,000 Back Rower

Pigskin, far be for me to assist the opposition but you should bench Laffranchi for round 1. He'll be out until about round 4.

I played this a bit last season and found that having 3 or 4 players that regularly score forward tries helped a lot.

Petey, Swain was crap in VirtualNRL last year. He didn't play too many full games. And if I recall correctly he was the subject of very fierce bidding in the bidding wars. Whoever got him got no value for money.

This was the easy part by the way. Keeping a full and competitive side on the field every week is the hard part.

I went for the forward try players mainly and tried to back that up with a good rather than brilliant backline.

I also made sure of Brett Hodgson because he may be the Tigers kicker, giving me two frontline kickers this season.

i really wanted cam smith from piggy, but i kept coming up against:
a) the 2 second string kicker limit
b) the max 5 players from each team

i decided to take geyer and slater instead

Brett Hogson I got in all other comps, thought I'd try Luke Burt out as I feel he'll have the kicking duties at parramatta, but only time will tell.

Bidding ended at 10 am uk time and no way that i could get in late for work so i had to put my final bids in with 3 hours bidding left.Managed to keep about 80% of my squad so pretty happy with that.Lost Lolesi and Tahu and maybe would have done some serious bidding for them if able to be online.Way it goes but the"Bushies" are looking forward to the comp.Playing Piston Broke first i think. ;-)

I dunno where the argument is about forward tries.

If a forward scores a real try, you get 4 points. If he gets a forward try, you get 4 points.

Playing the Games

You do nothing! All you do is sit back and watch the weekend's NRL action and see if the players you chose are performing. Throughout the weekend your score will be updated and if, after all 7 (in some cases 6) games on that weekend are complete and you have more points than your opponent, you receive 2 competition points (or however many are set to be awarded in the case of a private competition) towards the league!

Points are allocated largely the same as in the NRL itself:
Tries: 4 points
Goals: 2 points (only if by your nominated first choice goalkicker, or if they do not score a single goal, your second choice kicker)
Field goals: 1 point
Sin Bin: -1 point
Send Off: -6 points
Forward Try: 4 points
Sin bins and Send offs are punished as they affect their team in real life, and should affect your team in Virtual NRL as well. However, this year you can not end up with a negative score. If you have someone sent off and you score no points, you still get 0. You won't be beaten by a team that doesn't score!

Rather than employ a complex formula based on the myriad of stats available through the NRL, only the forwards (front rowers, back rowers, hookers and interchange forwards) have an additional means of scoring. The only forward try method in 2004 is:

All round Workhorse: combined total of 40 tackles and hit ups.
Only players who are selected to play in the forwards in your team are able to score forward tries. If you choose, for instance, a player who can play back row and centre in the centres, you can not receive a forward try even if they play back row in the NRL that weekend. Conversely, if you choose a player in the back row who plays centre during that weekend's NRL action, you are still eligible for a forward try.

Each player can only score one forward try per round.

This is what it says on the web site, I can't see why forwards wouldn't be awarded tries they scored normally, their is nothing their that suggests otherwise, they only introduced it as most forwards would be lucky to get 2-3 per season, why pay $250K for that, that's why I went after players like Wiki who could possibly do both.
