ahhh so it looks like Grevsmuhl might be ok to play after all :)
if not, grant will go well

Even if Grevsmuhl doesn't play at least it seems to be only a minor injury that will see him only miss a couple of weeks.

Still 50/50 I heard.

Good to see we have a core 17th man of Grant/Grevsmuhl/Turner so far.

Hoping Lowe can rediscover his 2010 form. Just needs to get the silly penalties and errors out.

Say for instance Grant, Grevsmuhl and Turner are all injured who would come in for the last bench spot in your opinion?

Based on what I saw in the trials from the young guys Brock Gray impressed me most. He looks like he has good size too.

This has probably been answered before in other threads but is Brock related to Aaron?

After Brock I would have to say it would be Sorensen, Gosiewski, Whitelaw and Brown.

Yeah--I reckon he'll get better as the season progresses---I hope Kirisome is back sooner than later--I reckon he was in for a huge 2015!!Nice & fresh for the back end of the season, maybe!

I'm hoping Millard gets better too.

Auva'a is a question mark until Round 22 if the NRL clears him.

Who knows how fit Auva'a will be though if cleared to return?

I'd probably be safe and go for McInnes and use Luke as a lock for some part of the game.

Brock and Aaron are brothers. I'd probably use PJ Los'e before him....just.

Your safe option is a smart choice and something I'm sure Madge would strongly consider if needed too at times this year.

To let you know PJ Lose only just made the U20s team he is 17th man. Brock got a starting spot in 2nd row.

Also this week for Norths I'd expect Gosiewski and Sorensen to play.

Manuleleau isn't named in U20s so I assume Madge wants him to play for Norths to help improve his game for a chance at an NRL debut sometime around origin period or maybe before depending on injuries.

In the backs outside our best 5 currently obviously next is Millard then it would have to be Gray and Manuleleau. At least Madge always has the option of moving McQueen to wing/centre if we have backline issues with injuries/bad form.

On a seperate note our squad for U20s this week looks very good.

I'll be keeping an eye out and reading match reports of U20s this year for sure. Definite future 1st graders in the team this year.

Crichton named in no.14 as well.

Goolagong, Olive and Simone in the backs.

Coleman and Hedges are halves and Booth is captain and hooker.

Very good back row of Saumamao, Brock and Whitelaw.

Musgrove on the bench with Los'e.

Overflowing with talent.

The head referee for the match is Gerard Sutton. He is actually a ref that I find does quite a good job most of the time.

I'm expecting lots of penalties in the 1st few rounds with tightening of the ruck area and whatever other new things they are looking to come down hard on this year.

Considering Los'e made starting prop in the Charity Shield and RTR I think that furthers his case but I wouldn't mind both he and Brock deserve a spot.

Manuleleua finished his last year of 20's last year so he'll be playing for Norths.

I think our 20's can do very well this year. Brimming with talent like you said and a lot of players are part of the first grade squad, that is how highly they are rated, and most are still 18.

Interesting to see Booth given captaincy I thought it would've gone to Saumamao or Whitelaw but great to see. After seeing him in the RTR game I think he can make grade if he continues his form. Funny to see our last few 20's captains have been hookers in Peats and McInnes.

We Need to Start Strong - Johnston

Rabbitohs speedster, Alex Johnston, has highlighted the importance of starting the season strongly as his side prepares to take on the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium in this Thursday night’s season opener in Queensland.
The Rabbitohs will be looking to make it three opening round wins in a row when they take on a new-look Broncos side back under the guidance of coach, Wayne Bennett.
“It’s always a challenge to start off the season strong,” said Johnston.
“That’s what we’re hoping to do – just play a great game against the Broncos. It’ll be a great atmosphere and I can’t wait.”
“We’re just trying to play our own game and focus on ourselves and week in, week out play the best that we can.”
The Rabbitohs enjoyed a successful trial period, picking up the Auckland Nines trophy, as well as the World Club Championship in the process. For Johnston, those performances are encouraging as the side prepares to take on the Broncos.
“We’ve had a big pre-season, it’s been great,” said Johnston.
“I think we’ve fallen into our structures really well and I can’t wait to play this season with them.”

Broncos v Rabbitohs
Suncorp Stadium
Thursday 5 March 7.05pm (AEST)
The look of freshly mown grass, the click-clack of boots on concrete, the smell of oil (both liniment and from the deep fryer), the drinks flowing and the crowd overflowing.
It can only mean one thing – rugby league is back.
An endless summer has given way to autumn and by the opening whistle on Thursday night, 152 days would have elapsed since the full-time siren sounded on the 2014 Grand Final.
Although the Four Nations, Auckland Nines and World Club Series have been run and won in the interim, nothing quite compares to the sheer thrill and excitement of the opening round of an NRL season.
Recent off-field dramas engulfing the game are set to be extinguished when defending premiers South Sydney travel north to take on a Brisbane Broncos side reinvigorated by the return of master coach Wayne Bennett and the addition of some new faces in key positions.
Bennett's return to the Broncos' helm is just one of many subplots surrounding this Round 1 blockbuster. Justin Hodges becomes sole captain of the Broncos with former co-captain Corey Parker lining up for his 300th NRL match – becoming only the second Bronco to do so behind future Immortal Darren Lockyer.
There'll be new faces for the Broncos too with Anthony Milford, Adam Blair and James Gavet all named in Bennett's 18-man squad.
Jordan Kahu starts the season at fullback in place of the injured Darius Boyd and after two years in the rugby league wilderness, outside back Aaron Whitchurch has impressed Brisbane's coaching staff enough to earn a place on the bench.
The Rabbitohs will start the season in a position they haven't been in since 1972 – as defending premiers.
However, they look just as potent as last season despite the loss of Sam and Luke Burgess, with Manly veteran Glenn Stewart a ready-made replacement coming straight into the side.
Success in the Auckland Nines and their 39-0 drubbing of St Helens in the World Club Challenge will provide a massive boost for the Bunnies as they look to become the first side to win back-to-back premierships since the Broncos did in 1992/93.
Chris Grevsmuhl, Tim Grant and Stewart will don the cardinal and myrtle jersey for the first time with Souths coach Michael Maguire naming an extended bench of seven for the trip to Brisbane.
Did You Know: New Broncos recruit Anthony Milford was only six years old when Corey Parker made his first-grade debut against the New Zealand Warriors in Round 6, 2001. Justin Hodges was playing his seventh NRL match.
Watch out Broncos: For Broncos fans the night will be about Bennett and Parker. However another Immortal-in-waiting, Greg Inglis, will be out to break the hearts of the home fans yet again. Inglis scored four tries against the Broncos in 2014 – a hat-trick in Round 23 at ANZ Stadium and a brilliant 85-metre solo effort in Round 8 at Suncorp. The Rabbitohs fullback had another stellar season in 2014 – crossing for 13 tries and laying on 15 try assists – however it's Inglis's kick-return ability that has the Broncos nervous.
Brisbane's fledging halves pairing of Ben Hunt and Anthony Milford have been putting in extra work on their kicking game this week in order to limit the kick return metres of Souths' skipper, who topped the kick-return metres chart in 2014 with 1,658 metres. The Broncos may attempt to kick the ball into touch at times to limit his carries, although keeping him quiet for the full 80 minutes is another story.
Watch out Rabbitohs: Corey Parker will likely lead the Broncos out on Thursday night in honour of his 300th game, but new skipper Justin Hodges will be proudly running out of the tunnel right behind him. Hodges' transition from larrikin to leader over the course of his 15-year career has been a long and winding road. Now 32, the veteran centre is targeting another premiership under the tutelage of Wayne Bennett, fully casting aside their acrimonious split when Hodges signed for the Sydney Roosters in 2001. A right-sided centre by trade, Hodges is tipped to fill in at fullback when the Broncos are on the offensive and then switch back to his preferred position while defending.
South Sydney must also keep a close eye out for Hodges around the play-the-ball due to his notoriety as an effective dummy-half runner. Hodges averaged five dummy-half runs per game in 2014 at an average of almost nine metres per run. Similarly to Inglis, implementing a plan to stop Hodges is easier said than done.
Key Match-Up: Luke Keary & Adam Reynolds v Anthony Milford & Ben Hunt.
The halves match-up of Souths' Keary and Reynolds against new Brisbane pairing Milford and Hunt shapes as another intriguing sidenote. Keary's introduction into the side late last year allowed John Sutton to shift into a ball-playing back-rower, offering the Rabbitohs another dimension in attack.
Halfback Reynolds was a mainstay during Souths' premiership season and managed 16 try assists, seven tries and four line breaks during the year, while kicking an impressive 105 goals from 120 attempts at an average of 87.5 per cent. For the Broncos, Hunt was the clear standout performer in 2014 and the pressure is now on the 24-year-old to avoid becoming a one-season wonder.
Hunt's figures last season were nothing short of astonishing: 13 tries, 19 try assists, 19 line-break assists and 20 line breaks came from his 25 games. His halves partner, Canberra recruit Anthony Milford, only started five matches at five-eighth last year but still had a heavy role in the playmaking duties. Milford ended the season with 12 tries, 14 try assists, 16 line breaks and 16 line-break assists. The 20-year-old is likely to play a more structured brand of football under the watch of Bennett and it's likely to take a handful of games together before he starts to gel with Hunt.
The History: Played 30; Broncos 21, Rabbitohs 8, Drawn 1.
South Sydney may have been Brisbane's perennial whipping boys throughout the 1990s and 2000s, but since 2011 – the season Inglis joined the club – the Bunnies have held a slender head-to-head advantage over the Broncos.
Since meeting in Round 16, 2011, Souths have won four out of seven games against Brisbane including the last three encounters. Souths beat Brisbane by an aggregate score of 70-42 last season, outscoring Brisbane by 12 tries to eight.
What Are The Odds: Brisbane Broncos $2.35 South Sydney Rabbitohs $1.60
Over three times more individual bets have been placed on the Bunnies in the head-to-head market, therefore firming them as warm favourites. South Sydney were $2.03 outsiders at one stage of betting, although this was back in November.
Latest odds at Sportsbet.com.au
Match Officials: Referee: Gerard Sutton. Assistant Referee: Grant Atkins. Touch Judges: Russell Turner and David Munro. Video Referees: Jared Maxwell and Luke Phillips.
Televised: Channel 9 – 7pm (AEST).
The Way We See It: As far as form is concerned, the Auckland Nines and World Club Series are the only guides to read off in 2015. It'll take a few matches before we see both sides fully hit their straps and on paper the Rabbitohs look better equipped to hit the ground running having taken out both of these pre-season trophies. The Broncos will be up for the challenge against the defending premiers and with a raucous home crowd, Wayne Bennett's return and Corey Parker's 300th providing increased motivation, they may well pull off an early-season upset. However, in a low-scoring affair, it's the Rabbitohs by four points.

Maguire Excited About 2015 Season

Wed 4th March, 04:30PM A A
Rabbitohs Head Coach, Michael Maguire, fronted the Rugby League media today at Sydney Airport as his team prepared to fly to Brisbane to take on the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium.
With a new season dawning, Maguire dismissed suggestions of early season nerves, instead pointing to the fact that his team is excited to be getting back into the grind.
“It’s more excitement I think,” said Maguire.
“They (the players) understand the work that we’ve put into the season and we’re looking forward to games.
“We’ve got a few new combinations which are working for us and we just want to be able to utilise those in a game.”

South Sydney's Adam Reynolds says Rabbitohs not satisfied with just one NRL title

Date March 4, 2015 - 10:00PM

Brad Walter

Sports Reporter

As South Sydney prepare to open their first defence of a premiership in 43 years against Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium, star halfback Adam Reynolds has declared: "We're not satisfied with just doing one".
Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire has instructed his players to avoid answering questions about wanting to become the first team since the Broncos of 1992-93 to win back-to-back grand finals but there is a quiet confidence in the Souths camp that if they work hard at training and play to the best of their ability it is an achievable goal.
"We definitely want to perform every week to give ourselves another chance to reach the finals, and put ourselves in the best chance for that glory," Reynolds said.It is that attitude that has resulted in the Rabbitohs winning the Nines in Auckland, retaining the Charity Shield and becoming world champions for the first time in the proud history of the NRL's oldest and most successful club with a record 39-0 demolition of Super League premiers St Helens at Langtree Park just 10 days ago.
After the team returned to their hotel in Liverpool, Souths high-performance manager Troy Thomson instructed the players to adjust their sleeping and eating patterns to Australian time to avoid any symptoms of jet lag when they arrived home last Wednesday.
While there were rumours in England that the Rabbitohs were planning post-match celebrations at The Cavern Club, where the Beatles regularly played before gaining international stardom, it was straight to business for the players and staff.
"It has just been instilled into us at this club and everyone has bought into that culture," Reynolds said. "We are all on the same page and we are all heading towards the one goal, and that is kicking off the season with a winning start.
"I feel we have had a fantastic pre-season. Everyone wants to do their best at training, it is always competitive and everyone goes out there to better themselves every day at training. I think when you have got everyone on the same page like that, it makes each player and the team a lot better.
"The harder we train the more confidence we get to go out there and do our best every week, and everyone has put in. Now it is time to knuckle down and start the season."
Besides the incident in an Arizona bar that led to the arrest of grand final-winning captain John Sutton and prop Luke Burgess, who has been released to Manly, it has been a relatively uneventful off-season for Souths.
With gruelling hikes and runs up the cliff faces of the Grand Canyon in freezing winds, Rabbitohs officials insist the 18-day altitude training camp was no end-of-season trip away and unlike some other clubs who have won premierships in the past, there have been no reports of Rabbitohs players partying throughout the summer.
Reynolds denied Maguire had told the players when to end their celebrations and said after witnessing the impact the grand final win had on Souths fans it was something they want to do again.
"It was a very proud moment, not only for myself but the whole area," he said. "Getting back to the [Souths] Juniors was pretty special. All our families were inside and the fans were outside celebrating. I think it took us just over an hour to walk 100 metres and celebrate it with them. They deserved it as much as us and and I couldn't be more thankful for their support throughout the years I have been here and well before that.
"It was a good reward for them and for ourselves, but in saying that it is all done and dusted now, it's in the past and we will be doing everything right this week to get out there and get a win against the Broncos."
Admitting that steering the Rabbitohs to the grand final had "definitely" given him more confidence, Reynolds also has his sights set on NSW No.7 jersey and knows that if he can continue the form that most people believe should have earned him man of the match in the World Club Challenge final, he will come under consideration for Origin this season.
"Every year it is a goal to play for NSW," Reynolds said. "It is something I am very passionate about. I want the Blues to do the best every year and I thought they did a fantastic job last year, so I just have to bide my time and keep performing to my best. One day the chance might come and I will take it. I have got a job to do here at Souths and if I do that well I am sure I will be looked at."

Taukafa also adds depth to our backs in case of injuries. He will play for Norths too.

Come on Johnston let's show Wayne Bennett the forgetful man once more that we aren't predictable.

As a team Souths this year will play even more different as we all know. We saw good glimpses at the back end of last year but will obviously build on that.

I'm fired up! Let's give it to the Broncos tomorrow night!

The Broncos will have lots of unpredictable plays coming at them tomorrow night. If they aren't prepared Bennett could be in for a surprise.

Honestly I reckon Millard and Taukafa will get over Gray and Manuleleua if there's injuries in the backs.

On second thoughts you're actually most likely going to be right on that one.

I'm not convinced yet though on Taukafa. I need to see more of him play. No doubt he has very good talent though.

I think he'll be a bit like what Justin Hunt was for us. Will most likely play for Norths most of the year but when we need him during Origin he'll come in and do a decent job. Manulelea did better in the Charity Shield but Taukafa did better at Redfern so atm it's a tie for me atm.
