Well done fellas

Bloody strange game of footy, not sure what I make of either side after that one. Warriors made the most of their huge possession and territory, and Manly weren’t good enough to stand up and defend them strongly, a few very soft tries
I completely agree with this. I feel f**king ecstatic about the result but I honestly sit back and go 'what did we do so well'?

I do feel like we defended incredibly well, a couple of blemishes from RTS on Saab's wing apart. That's got to be our blueprint, defend well and let the other team implode. I still didn't think like we fired an incredible amount of shots attacking-wise, but scored 36 points. Weird.

Manly started hot, got cute, it didn't work, then got tired.
Mean more in a normal world, the Warriors won’t be getting that much possession and territory, so did we learn a lot about their attack, and on the other side it’s unusual to be defending your line so consistently, so did we learn that Manlys goal line D is weak, that we probably did

Pompey really struggled, when is Berry back?

Also not sure about CHT

The forwards though were outstanding. Manly were really struggling to get out their 20 towards the end of the 1st half

Yep you defended well, perhaps both edges looking brittle early played into their hands with Manly not going up the middle at all after that. The use of Olakau’atu was abysmal

Warriors tries, lots of opportunistic stuff helped with fatigue, what I did like was seeing some offloading, and decent support player should be hanging to the right of JFH because the opportunities were there. They made a break off one early in the first half them Egan hit 2 1 out runners and didn’t make anything of it with a spread

Felt most tries came from Manly mistakes.
Didnt feel like structured attack.
But glad they took the opportunities that got presented.

I put this in the 3-2-1 thread but it was better in here… lol

That had to be one of the worst warriors wins I’ve ever seen.. lol

They need to fix the halves… they seriously have no structure it’s crazy they won so well.

nearly all their tries came from unstructured play/individual brilliance or poor reads on defence.

good on them for winning.. but unless they bring in someone who can run the ship they won’t be playing finals football.

the kicking game was f**ken atrocious.

RE structure and kicking game, what are you comparing it to? Last week against the raiders? Or last year with SJ at 7. Both of those were dog shit and led to many losses.

Tonight wasn't a loss. Not even close. Not even a bad win, was a good win. Kick em when they lose, sure, but they showed they took the raiders loss personally and did something about it. That is an attitude and something to build on.

True.

Manly are right up there, strike all over the park. You should take a lot of comfort out of it.

Was at the game - one of the best live experiences I've had! Tohu tribute, tries galore, dodgy video ref calls, getting stuck into RTS not marking, crowd willing Jazz to drop the ball. Glorious.

Was it pretty and perfect? Not at all, but this was a huge result in context.

Last week so bad I was genuinely starting to think 2023 was lightning in a bottle and we're never going back.

But yesterday the attitude was so much better, we looked fit and ready and played the full 80 minutes. This spine has never been tested, Metcalf is just a kid who's finding his ceiling. Egan, Fish and Barnett went up a gear. When calls weren't going our way, we didn't throw our heads down we got back into the grind.

Last year one of our biggest issues was our inability to put on big points, and yesterday we chalked up 36 with an attack that hasn't quite got it together. It's a good win, that performance won't win a title but it's a start. It's only round two and we at least know there's fight & points within us.

I know what you mean about being left wondering how we gave Manly a hiding out of that disjointed and clunky attacking performance.

It kind of reminded me of the Ivan Cleary Warriors, some individual plays bag a few try's here and there, we kick to Manu, a random player crashes over the Try line - while the rest of the game is spent trying not to stuff up a lead.

Put it this way, it was a far cry from the smooth well organized attack seen in the preseason trial against Melbourne C team, where we put together some really nice combinations, centered around Metcalf and CHT.

A lot of our points came from throwing a dummy and gunning for it or plain old straightening the attack and crash bashing over the line.

Hey if it works stick to it. But it does end up looking like a reliance on individual hard running by players rather than thought out constructed Try's based around ball movement.

So what if it is not good enough to win the comp? (rhetorical) at the moment the club and fans need some joy and the players especially needed some confidence after Vegas. My advice to us all is to enjoy that win, it was a huge upset (however it was achieved).

A win that is likely is going to be one of the highlights of our season, and I don't want to miss out on riding this feeling for the sake of looking ahead and expecting these kinds of wins every week.

The best I can say about that win is that it was honest, we played as hard as we could, and we got a pleasant surprise for our effort. Manly fans should be rightly peeved off with that effort. They showed up expecting an easy win, they had a nice game plan to go around us, and when they tasted success early and possibly too easily. From there they expected to stroll in, the Warriors muscled up and Manly kept trying to take the easy path (going wide before winning the middle/cynical infringements/any cheat hack they could try to disrupt the Warriors).

We deserved that win. There was no fluke about it.

I thought there were encouraging signs of structure. Not always perfectly executed but you could see what they were working towards.

Chanel’s try was well run, sure the gap came from Garrick’s bad read but that’s the purpose of Pompey’s decoy line. They played it perfectly.

Taine’s try was off the back of playing to Niukore short multiple times and then going out back once in the right part of the field. Final execution was poor and needed Taine to improvise for the score, but the lead up was clearly thought out.

And the same structure led to Ali’s try, except hitting a different runner (and executing properly).

Far from perfect obviously, Metcalf was indecisive at times and they panicked a bit when Jurbo was off by trying to go wide too early. But I thought they showed some encouraging stuff. And the effort was brilliant.

I’d like to see us compete for corner kicks more though. The reason for CHT’s selection is now clearer, his left foot allowing them to kick into both corners now instead of just the right so that’s a bit of variation at least. But the Roosters showed in the following game the benefit of actually competing instead of just waiting for the defender to come down with the ball.

Our edge defense needs a ton of work too. That shit was giving me PTSD. Roger and Pompey need to introduce themselves to each other asap.

Compared to a consistent f**king finals football contender… the aim of this football side should be to play finals football and win a premiership.

over the course of an entire season this arsey type of football will not do that.

there were plenty of positives that’s for sure… the fact they hung in the fight when we all know previous sides could have fallen apart when things went against them.

but you have to admit the lack of structure and effective kicking game was concerning.

CHT played well and I don't think he is a bad player at all. I just don't think he's a half. I think his future is more in that Dylan Walker zone, but we have a Dylan Walker (and, for that matter, an Erin Clark)
