I completely agree with this. I feel f**king ecstatic about the result but I honestly sit back and go 'what did we do so well'?
I do feel like we defended incredibly well, a couple of blemishes from RTS on Saab's wing apart. That's got to be our blueprint, defend well and let the other team implode. I still didn't think like we fired an incredible amount of shots attacking-wise, but scored 36 points. Weird.
I know what you mean about being left wondering how we gave Manly a hiding out of that disjointed and clunky attacking performance.
It kind of reminded me of the Ivan Cleary Warriors, some individual plays bag a few try's here and there, we kick to Manu, a random player crashes over the Try line - while the rest of the game is spent trying not to stuff up a lead.
Put it this way, it was a far cry from the smooth well organized attack seen in the preseason trial against Melbourne C team, where we put together some really nice combinations, centered around Metcalf and CHT.
A lot of our points came from throwing a dummy and gunning for it or plain old straightening the attack and crash bashing over the line.
Hey if it works stick to it. But it does end up looking like a reliance on individual hard running by players rather than thought out constructed Try's based around ball movement.
So what if it is not good enough to win the comp? (rhetorical) at the moment the club and fans need some joy and the players especially needed some confidence after Vegas. My advice to us all is to enjoy that win, it was a huge upset (however it was achieved).
A win that is likely is going to be one of the highlights of our season, and I don't want to miss out on riding this feeling for the sake of looking ahead and expecting these kinds of wins every week.
The best I can say about that win is that it was honest, we played as hard as we could, and we got a pleasant surprise for our effort. Manly fans should be rightly peeved off with that effort. They showed up expecting an easy win, they had a nice game plan to go around us, and when they tasted success early and possibly too easily. From there they expected to stroll in, the Warriors muscled up and Manly kept trying to take the easy path (going wide before winning the middle/cynical infringements/any cheat hack they could try to disrupt the Warriors).
We deserved that win. There was no fluke about it.
