Panthers lose ball 10m out, challenged, no camera angle to see lost ball or strip. WTF
Is he refing both sides? All Panthers in front of try line, so easy to see. Then a 24m tap restart by them?
Panthers lose ball 8m out.
DWZ limping in defensive line, can't get Sorenson and CNK slips off.

MGF goes through a gap, nearly loses ball but scores

18-28 79mins

Such a poor game.
Phil, I know you hate 'taking the two' but that moment at 14-12 we probably should've. We lost posession - or bombed out or something - and they raced away to score. It really felt like game over there.

Sheesh mate, we deserved to get penalised, Halasima was just taking people out and not making a genuine attempt at the ball.

But, the good thing is we're now a good side that the NRL and TV peeps like so we get those calls go for us now.

Unusually positive coming from me, but I look back at this game now and I'm not too disconsolate about it, despite it looking like a horrendous loss on paper against such a weakened side.

Losing Niukore and DWZ for the game was major (yes even if you think DWZ sucks, having to reshuffle and only having 2 on the bench is still a big issue) and then you add in Metcalf being hobbled. 2 of their tries came directly through injured players - Sorenson through DWZ's channel after injuring him, Talagi past Metcalf who could barely move - and in Sorenson's case, was scored by a bloke who probably should have been in the bin.

Also I know talking about luck is lame, but it just wasn't our night generally. Jenkins' intercept when we were in for all money, the arsey try by Alamoti. Was just one of those nights.

There was just a hell of a lot that happened in that game that changed the dynamic from "top 4 side vs Origin depleted reserve graders" to more of an even match between two hobbled sides, with the Warriors having to adjust on the fly. Yeah, with a solid 80 minute performance we should've still won, but aside from the Sharks game we're still not a team who I expect to put it all together and win convincingly very often.

Disagree on that. Penrith put players between him and the ball so he had to leap slightly early to have any chance at getting to it. That situation was created by the Penrith blockers, not Halasima.

You can't blame the opposition for that, it's their job, as long as they don't do it illegally. He just flew up taking people out.

I'm not complaining about the outcome, I'm glad we're now a team that gets the rub of the green (it's about f-ing time), but if that happened the other way the response on here would have been completely different.

Felt he had eyes on the ball.

If they put players in the way denying him a fair jump at it then it’s an illegal block play though. So however you interpret it it’s either going to be a penalty to us or play on.
It wasn’t a rub of the green call as much as the ref took the option that let play flow better, but either way the call would’ve been in our favour.

I’ve only seen it once, but from descriptions I’ve read here, Penrith players were standing still, so they aren’t running an escort, they are entitled to be there and you can’t just knock them out of the way. Doesn’t matter where your eyes are looking, any contact into them that effects the catcher taking the ball cleanly should be a penalty

He attempted to jump over them and catch the ball. He chased through on the kick and was going for it the whole time, the Penrith players were loitering in the way. The fact that they were in the way and he knocked them into the catcher isn’t his fault. They are entitled to stand there but they doesn’t mean Leka isn’t entitled to try and get to the ball.
anyway sounds like you didn’t actually rewatch the play? It’s on the match highlights on the NRL website, have a look for yourself.

I don’t know what the specific rules are but intuitively it seems reasonable to allow a player to compete for space as part of legitimately competing for the ball.

Would be consistent with the contest allowed for grubber kicks - no pushing, no grabbing but shoulder to shoulder body contact is fine if you’re legitimately after the ball.

As I say, I don’t know the actual rules and they may say otherwise. But seems fine in principle.

If the situation were reversed, but you could clearly see a legitimate attempt to compete for the catch, I’d have been fine with it against us too. Shitty at the score, but not at the ruling.
