EMBATTLED winger Cooper Vuna said yesterday that he had no plans to part company with the Newcastle Knights despite attracting interest from Wests Tigers.Tigers recruitment manager Warren McDonnell, Knights strategic development manager Keith Onslow and Vuna's agent have held discussions in recent days about granting the Tongan international an early release so that he could make a mid-season transfer.
The cut-off date for new signings is June 30.
McDonnell told The Herald on Wednesday that the Tigers had explored the option of recruiting Vuna but "it's probably not going to eventuate".
Contracted to the Knights until the end of next year, Vuna said he intended to honour that deal.
"The only thing that I know is I'm here and I'm going to try and get back in the squad," Vuna said.
"I'm just going to try toughing it out, and hopefully I get a game sooner rather than later."
Vuna's hopes of a top-grade recall have been put on hold until after he appears in Newcastle Local Court on July 7 to answer allegations that he was caught driving with a suspended licence twice in seven days.
Knights officials have stood Vuna down from NRL games until he is processed by the legal system, although he is allowed to continue playing for Cessnock.
Newcastle's disciplinary committee will deal with Vuna after his court case, and terminating his contract is one option they will consider.
Vuna's manager, Peter Brown, is in England and it is understood he has made inquiries at Super League clubs on behalf of his client.
But the 21-year-old, who has made only one NRL appearance for Newcastle this season, could be ineligible to gain a United Kingdom working visa should his alleged driving offences lead to a conviction.
He faces up to two years in jail if found guilty.

Du Plessis attended the renowned rugby development school of Paul Roos Gymnasium Stellenbosch. AAP
