WA BEARS

WA is a pipe dream. If the NRL wanted it to stay around, they would've fought harder when the Super League collapsed, rather than investing their attention to Melbourne. I hope they never get a team.

How does what happened nearly 30 years ago have any bearing to circumstances now?

So you’re using one personal experience to say we should get rid of the Storm. Notwithstanding, they have the highest membership in the game, one of the higher average attendance and probably one of the highest supporting clubs

Good call

News Ltd and ARLC invested about $100m in the Storm between 1998 and 2018. It works out at about $5m a year which isn't that much and has brought way more than $100m into the game from broadcast rights and the Victorian government. You have to spend money to make money. Without the Storm our broadcast rights wouldn't be as strong. Everyone benefits from that, from the players to the clubs and the state bodies.
At their worst it was 10 million pa

and this was based on a successful team for much of their 25 yr existence

what happens to their finances if they have a long lean run

They should play 2-3 home and away games at HBF Park per year to gauge support in WA. Not origin games or stupid double headers at Optus.

I dunno.. the crowds so far look reasonable.

Keeping in mind that this is without any commitment from the NRL towards having a Perth team added, and with games taken there purely at the whims of NRL clubs.....

Random teams like they used to. I remember Souths would sell out the ground every year. They’ll have a game spare next year when the dolphins take over Sunshine Coast.

How long do you want to pull that chain? You can run the risk of alienating whatever good will or support without any form of commitment.

If you say for example, we will give you 2-3 games a year over 3-4 years and if you meet certain criteria, then we will guarantee you a side, then it would be (somewhat) understandable. But again that area has been waiting for a while and the crowd numbers have been good.

The Storm were given more advantages than any other club. The only club that had it almost as good as Melbourne was the Broncos back in the 90s.

we had at least 2 games locked in for 3 years prior to covid hitting. They are now talking about a double header plus 3 games during the womens world cup when venues over east are not availble. None of which makes a jot of difference to if perth should have a club, we’ve proven time and again for a decade we have a strong core rl fanbase here.

Salary. So next year expectations between 10.5 and 11 million

Rightio so the argument against going to Perth or Adelaide for example is that it would cost too much, notwithstanding we already give clubs in heartland over 10 million dollars per year each?

The only argument against Perth really (and that would be against any further sides as well) is the amount of player talent. That may or may not be a valid argument considering the scores we have seen this round, although I still think the bigger problem is the division of said talent

No what about the establishment costs and funding of juniors

someone’s got to pay those

you want the arlc to do an afl and throw a billion dollars at it ?

How would they throwing a billion dollars at it? Don’t exaggerate.

In any case, if they are giving existing clubs $200 million a year (some of whom don’t really deserve or need the amount of money coming their way) the argument that they don’t have the money for additional sides is risible.
