The Bears thought that they would be playing out of Bluetongue Stadium, when the Stadium wasn’t finished they had failed to secure a back up Oval, North Sydney Oval was unavailable so the Bears had to play the 1999 season at all away venues mainly in Qld.
The Bears were struggling financially as it was, then the merger happened and the rest in history as unfortunately were the Bears.
As sad as that is, my magpies got booted too, I stand by my comment that they were not a successful club. They offer nothing to a new club.

They weren’t a successful club by any means, in the 80’s they were always competitive with players like Mark Graham, Olsen Filipaina, Fred Ah Kuoi, Don McKinnnon and John Gray, in the 90’s they were consistently semi finalists and they rest unfortunately is fish and chip paper.
As a Bears supporter any luck was good luck, they certainly knew how to lose a match, if the Bears were around today I’d have no doubt that they would have the most losses in golden point lol.

In the media and arlc commissioners opinion

sorry bud to be the bearer of bad news
Media loves a good headline, arlc loves to feed the media to drum up its actual interests - just like the "threats" of moving the GF

Pasifika is a good headline to drum up talk about expansion and nothing else, its a far king shit concept for an actual team, and you'd hope anyone with sense running the game knows this

It's trying to do too much at once, which always results in doing not enough of anything, then throw in that it'll supposedly also be a fifo team in a regional town arguably more isolated than Perth

I agree with you but commonsense has never been high within NRL headquarters and if it doesn’t affect the existing clubs it is very likely to happen, did anybody mention gambling entering new locations ?.

Ignoring the mainstream media is usually a good idea 8 times out of 10 lol

But regardless no, I'm seeing this "talk" for what it actually is, talk to drum up interest in RL expansion and keep progressive and good headlines in the media. Just like vlandys being "open" to taking the GF to Melbourne, i didnt see you taking that headline and start telling everyone it's a sure thing to happen

So stop spruiking yourself as some divine prophet who knows all about the inner working of nrl hq, attempting to present everything you post as an absolute fact, and shooting down anyone's opinions who don't align with yours in a sad attempt at continual trolling

End of the day noone has made any official call on any location to be the next expansion, and the Feds also havnt officially pledged any money, contract or timeframe for the frankenstein pasifika - anything anone here posts is an opinion at this stage, some better than others (imo 😅)

But it does effect the other clubs

It directly stomps on the Cowboys toes if actually based in Cairns, and will see half the clubs fly into the security headache that is port moresby every year, then throw in the nature of fifo and the distance and hours the players of that team will have to travel every week through customs, and what the rlpa will have to say about that

The only reason it's being given any light is the flimsy promise of government funding

So you believe the media when they had Perth as favourites but not when they have png now as favourites

you are a funny person

Sydney Media only ever had perth as favourites when it involved the bears. Kent and co couldnt find perth on a map let alone tell you how realistic an nrl club may be here.

pasifika bears based in australia ,makes perfect sense to Wb and kent lol

Nope

Just like I said before, at that time Perth was the flavour of the month

We've also had brisbane 3 as favourites not long ago

Next month it might be NZ 2, who the f**k knows - everything is an opinion at this stage

Like you’ve been told media will pick a fave every month to keep the story going. Pasifika is just this months fish and chip wrapper, fuelled by an nrl that’s quite happy to keep the attention going And the spotlight off afl bringing in a 19th team. you’ve been following this conversation to know they’ve talked up nz2, perth, go anywhere bears, brisbane3 and now pasifika over the last 9 months.

The media don’t pick a favourite

it was based on comments by the commission

Perth took over from nz due to their govt involvement and a potential link with the bears

now png have blown them out of the water

this competition is healthy for the nrl

Based on his rinse repeat posting it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't remember what happened last week let alone the last 9 months

Thats the point, comments are made all the time, doesn't necessarily mean they are the new favourite

Give it a few weeks and another bid/location/fantasy will emerge

Someone from the arlc will say something
The media will post a dozen articles

Does this mean they are the new favourites? Maybe
Is it more likely it's just fresh material that'll pull some good headlines?
Probably

Haha, so naive, media will spin a story whichever way they think will get the most clicks.
the last statement by anybody official a month ago was all over the place and shows they clearly haven’t decided yet.

form same article

Brisbane3 :"I have a lot of empathy for the fact that rugby league has an Ipswich connection and that area is our heartland," Jones said."We have to always make sure we keep our heartland in our decision making.

pasifika: "We are going to look at all options, but as I have said in the past and as the chairman (V'landys) reiterated today, Pasifika is very strongly in our mind.

perth: "Our goal is to be a truly national competition and that means expansion," she said.

sounds like they know exactly what they want lol

The last offical comment from vlandys, hardly sends a resounding favourite message does it?

The federal government are very keen for us to look at the Papua New Guinea-Pasifika solution, where there would be a PNG team with all the Pacific nations,” V’landys told The Continuous Call team.

“We’ll certainly, out of respect to the government, look at that. And that would be 2025 if that was to occur.

But there are plenty of other options.”
