Mind you, the way they've managed to rationalize Melbourne a little via relocation (Sydney) and something KINDA like what the Western Bears is proposing (Brisbane) and have those two clubs find a decent sustained levels of onfield success - unlike our joint ventures - is pretty admirable.

That’s a hard one as the Western Bears has attributes of both the Lions and the Swans scenarios.
The only thing that makes me lean towards the Swans profile more is that the Brisbane Bears became the Brisbane Lions when Fitzroy merged.
The Swans moved 100% and the Western Bears is located in, and the board is WA.

I was probably going from the angle that North Sydney Bears would still play in NSW Cup, as Fitzroy play in one of the VFL leagues (2nd or 3rd tier from what I gather?).. whereas the Swans look like they don't have any remnant playing in Melbourne.

Might be wrong, but anyway the AFL have done relocation WITHOUT reviving a team.

It's a shame the NSWRL/ARL/NRL couldn't do that - Norths gave them the opportunity to show they could in the 1990s, jumping before they were pushed.

South Sydney to return to Perth as momentum builds ahead of Western Bears NRL entry

Regular visitor South Sydney will return to Perth for NRL games in the next two seasons in the lead-up to the entry of Western Australia’s own team in 2027.

The Rabbitohs are expected to be part of a double-header at Optus Stadium in 2025, with the Dolphins tipped to play in the other match.
South Sydney’s two-year deal with the WA Government ensures live NRL games in WA in the lead-up to the Western Bears entering the competition.

Confirmation the Bears will join the competition is expected in the week after the NRL grand final on October 6.

A doubleheader featuring the Newcastle Knights and Dolphins, Cronulla Sharks and the Rabbitohs in 2023 attracted more than 45,000.

This year’s Dolphins clash with the Sydney Roosters at HBF Park was a sellout despite going head-to-head with West Coast’s AFL clash with Gold Coast.

It will be the Rabbitohs’ 12th visit to Perth to play a home game since 2009 and the club’s third match at Optus Stadium.

“As our discussions progressed with the Western Australian Government, it became clear that we could return to our home away from home ahead of the expected inclusion of the Perth-based NRL team in the coming seasons,” Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly said.

The Rabbitohs and Dolphins’ opponents are not yet confirmed and will be released with the full NRL fixture later in the year.

The Western Bears are likely to play the majority of their home games at HBF Park as Sunday twilight fixtures.

As revealed in The West Australian, the 480-page bid document, lodged on August 14, nominates Sunday at 4.30pm as the preferred timeslot.

The bid is in the hands of the Australian Rugby League’s expansion and bid assessment committee.

A team from Papua New Guinea is expected to enter the NRL in 2028 with a 20th franchise in 2029 or 2030.

While the Bears and PNG are considered locks, the NRL is still a way off approving a 20th licence.

The PNG franchise will receive $600m in Federal Government funding, with $250m set aside for infrastructure as part of a soft diplomacy strategy in the Pacific.

Friday September 27th to Sunday 29th September, the 2024 CAS Championships will be held in Victoria, Victoria will defend their title against Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory.
WA have named its final squad from the initial squad of 62 players, Rockingham Sharks players 5/8 Keelyn Tuuta-Edwards, centre Logan Barclay and Joondalup Giants Hooker River Coleman couldn’t represent due to work commitments.
It is a squad of experience and youth, two time Premiers North Beach Sea Eagles have 8 players selected, as do Grand Finalists the Fremantle Roosters.
The Joondalup Giants 2 players, Rockingham Sharks 1 player and South Perth Lions 1 player round out the squad of 20.
