AFL wastes hundreds of millions on juniors and is stilll struggling for players

nrl is the opposite

we are lucky we have leagues clubs who fund much of the junior development allowing head office to instead build up its asset base and fund clubs to five million over the cap

clubs are the ones who develop actual nrl players unlike afl where there is a draft

participation numbers are just bs and are basically useless
Stay off drugs kiddies

I started to respond, read it and thought- f**k I’m starting to sound like a famous fellow Queensland poster not seen around in a bit….

All good lads, let’s just chalk it down to a difference of opinion. This opinion really belongs in the “controversial take that would get you stubby burned” thread- happy to send it there.

I do get how the NSWRL had the foresight and balls to expand the comp back in the day and do think the comps won should be counted in some way that matter to the clubs/fans. It would be nice though if other existing clubs enter the NRL that their achievements gets some recognition too.

So back on Western Bears- when is official word happening, GF Day????

Being not around at the time I asked why Broncos joined NSWRL and not just the comps combine. Finances is what I was told.

Not sure if you follow NFL?

Green Bay Packers have always been an NFL team and as such their record counts. 49ers are just as old but came from the AFL as such their before doesn't count.

NBA has similar when they had a comp merger.

So there are examples in other leagues. It is a hard one because you need tradition but things are alot different now

So if Brisbane Easts come in their history shouldn't be used to build their fanbase?

Dolphins have been set as a new club haven't they?
If Brisbane Tigers come in, they should absolutely use their history.

Re: Dolphins, they are the same organisation, it isn't separate. It's just ego and political bullshit from the governing bodies that are preventing an old QRL brand's history to be recognised the same way the old NSWRL brands' histories are.

It doesn’t matter what the competition ownership or brand changed to. The premiership continued.

The Dolphins NRL club isn’t even the same club as the Redcliffe Dolphins.
So why does the NSWRL still exist if it was a name change?

The BRL and NSWRL comps were first grade comps right up until 1994. Do we dispute this? I hope we don't because it's a fact.

With this fact in mind what's the difference between acknowledging the 1921 premiership of the Bears, and the 1965 premiership of the Dolphins?

The NRL is a national body who is supposed to be representing the whole country and are happy to lean on historical Brisbane brands to help strengthen their expansion efforts, but not go as far as honouring that same club's first grade history like they do every other club that existed pre 1995.

It’s the qrl who said they couldn’t use it

the same qrl who were opposed to the dolphins entering the nrl

Nah
Need to wipe off all those broncos comps pre 95 it’s Sydney centric to include them

when they were playing in the nswrl comp
Don't have to go to thaty shit extreme... just acknowledge BRL records pre 1995 same as NSWRL records ... the fact that immortals Wally's Lewis and Mal Meninga appear to have played f**k all first grade games despite having played for and captained Australia while playing BRL is a joke. And if you can't see that The dolphins and Redcliffe are one in the same you are truly blinkered...you can play from U6 to nrl without changing club.. I'd say it's the same place wouldn't you.

Is western the full name the bears are going with? Why not West Coast or Western Australia? We already have Wests as the Tigers and a half-baked article last month about Balmain wanting to leave Wests Tigers and a potential Western Suburbs return which would have to be renamed Western Sydney or MacArthur.

Having Western and a Wests is confusing to a casual viewer. Not to fan like us, but people with fleeting or seasonal interest

They got feedback western was more marketable than Perth

Plus it’s a nod to the western reds

It's more that it's part of the state's name since it's got state government backing, without sounding like a state representative team if they were known as the WA Bears.

It won't cause that much confusion. They've had Western Suburbs and Western Reds before, also North Queensland and North Sydney.

There was a time in the game where South Sydney, South Queensland, North Sydney, North Queensland, Western Suburbs and Western Reds all co-existed.

People weren’t confused then. Why would they be confused now?

It's just so they can revert back to western reds when VLands moves on and keep some brand continuity.
Funny but just remember that the big commercial and IP lawyers in this country live in Sydney, not Perth.

The recent ramblings out of Balmain/Wests should be a lesson. Maybe 20% of the implications of such talks were reported onthe other 80% where NRL/ARLC pulled both their ears and dragged them into the dunce corner wasn’t.

Anything that makes the overall game and controlling/authority bodies look weak or seem like they’ve taken a loss ie. Having a club within their governance self implode and bringing bad headlines like a de-merger, won’t be tolerated.

Commercial strength and reputation is everything.
