As I have said before maybe Peter Cumins is just a really great rugby league sponsor and not really NRL ownership material ?.
This may be true, shame either the Bears or WA don't have any other options though.

And to be honest, its a shame there doesn't seem to be any other option than "taxpayer funded"

There were 5/6 of them in the consortium. It wasnt a one man show. And yeh hes not been successful at business at all lol.
Well they obviously don’t like something about him, that bit is certainly obvious, and from what I’ve heard with negotiations he was very close minded to the East Coast side of doing things.

This would be why they want govts to fund grass roots investments.

Because how do you know x offical body isn't involved until you get the document?
funding grass roots doesn't cover the $50mill start up costs (WA) Or 100mill'ish (NZ) needed. So wheres that coming from if not private investors?

Thats even more worrying though isn't it.

The game is supposedly in rude health, and yet we cant drum up one credible private investor to bid on an expansion team.

For mine, they way the NRL have played this all out in public is slight on our game.

Nathan Tinkler was a Billionaire. Looked great on paper yet didn't play out that way

Obviously, but it isnt a popularity contest! Its not like they are flush will options by look of it. 6 weeks on and still nothing resolved for what's next.

At the very least would it have hurt for the NRL to show him some respect given the millions he's pumped into grassroots RL to keep the game alive in WA? He's been doing their job for them for nearly 3 decades!

Weve seen members owned club (LC's at least) get into trouble and we've seen private owned clubs get into trouble. We've seen LC owned clubs do well and we've seen privately owned clubs do well. That'd suggest either model can work or can fail and its more about the people running them than the model itself?

None have been offically broke though.

Sharks have always owned their home ground for example.

Is an investor going to sell a house or a company to fund the team if need be or will they walk away?

Option 2 always. Hence why you need something more secure behind it as well

So the only new NRL clubs to be admitted must be owned by LC's? Well that's going to discount expansion beyond 3 states lol

Pretty sure the Balmain and Illawarra sides of NRL clubs had to bail when no longer able to afford the ownership? Newcastle were broke hence why they sold to Tinkler. Tigers have been a basket case for years despite rich LC ownership, Sharks just survived selling off assets as they went broke effectively.

Financial risk is easily resolved by either a financial lump sum guarantee that the NRL holds, or a bank surety like Dolphins were made to get (NRL clearly didn't trust the LC model enough in their case).

You still haven't answered who pays the license fee and start up costs if no private investors?

They met with chalmers and searle

That bid is privately backed

The most likely scenario is Perth is privately owned too

Hope the WA Bears get a spot. Perth is a nice spot. Bears fans are like roaches, never say die (literally).

They could be a good club if given the chance. Equally, they could also be an easy 2 points each round.

That is the whole point Matt - the bid team had spend $700,000 to prepare a very significant document that was pumping millions into both Perth & North Sydney Rugby League and V'landy or Abdo couldn't even contact them to discuss the issues before going public. Extremely poor form.
Might have been the slap in the face numeral that was the cause of all this... you know the big fat ZERO

Whilst I'm not surprised by Vlandys poor communication and generally sht way he goes about the games business (I mean leaking the news in the media before talkign to the bids? who does that?), what is clear since is that the bids were expected to put up $20mill license fee.
The fact two of the NZ bids have stated they put that amount in their bids (presuming they are being truthful) would suggest that the NRL had given them that direction. Cant defend the consortium if they knew before hand and tried their arm by putting zero. No reason for the NRL to stone wall them, that's just dumb imo not taking the chance to have a WA club owned by WA people, but was a seemingly stupid play by the consortium.
Well finally you've come around and accepted that Cummins was told twice, yet still went ahead and put zero, and had no intention of investing in the NRL

There was no evidence of it up until now. Now there is I'm happy to concede they knew the expectation and call them dumb/naieve/wishful (the your pick) for thinking they didnt need to.

Still in a world where you are trying to get a good outcome you'd have had that conversation behind closed doors, see if they could front up the fee and make it happen. Not go public, slate everyone off then scramble around for a different solution.

The NZ bid announced last week has no Leagues Club backing but comes with assets built into the bid.

As opposed to Cummins who 'was confident' he'd raise the $30m when the article was printed in July.

That is the difference

As before, all is not as it may seem.
