Um yes. The swans totally relocated. Did you know that? The lions not so much. Did you know that?

Um did you know they both moved over 35 years ago?

Um are we in Perth yet?

Um

Difference between swans & bears is the former had a reserves team. That was the 1980's. Today even South's have a feeder interstate.

I wouldn’t mind the nrl copying the afl funding system but not as drastic

Same salary cap for all clubs but the grant is different

Regional clubs get 1 million pa extra in funding

Inter state and international clubs gets an extra 2 million in funding

Would help them spend more money on juniors / development officers and other off field staff to help them grow

Wouldn’t cost a lot either
It actually is somewhat variable now. If you look at clubs accounts the NRL grant payment varies widely from $17million up to $21million depending on a range of factors.

When afl does is it’s an example of being visionary

When nrl does it it’s Sydney centric
1. they were two clubs in the current competition
2. they moved the clubs and lock stock and barrel.

all NRL is doing is forcing a defunct brand on WA to con a few remaining fans on the East coast back into following the game.

The afl saw value in the lions and swans brands

And unlike north Sydney neither club has a leagues club it was purely the brand name

The Swans/Lions thing has been beaten to death because people can't get their heads around supplementing an expansion side with the revival of a club that's been fighting 25+ years for readmission.

At least it's not as confusing as the Oakland > Los Angeles > Back to Oakland > Las Vegas Raiders.

Take out a women’s team what are the other reasons
?
Interestingly clubs are now getting variable funding for 'development and pathways' on top of the standard grant. In 2023 Broncos got $1.5mill for this in '23 up from $980k in '22. As you say nrlw and other womens participation costs are also a factor and not sure what else is causing the discrepancies in amounts.

Agreed. It happened decades ago.

Maybe it’s more spending more on men’s juniors too which is a good thing

or maybe it was because they wanted to reduce number of melbourne clubs and saw it as a way of killing two birds with one stone? expansion and consolidation at same time? Its no secret the NRL was keen for years for Sharks to move somewhere else.

An actual equivalent would be a current Sydney club close closing down its Sydney operations and moving lock stock and barrell to Perth. But thats not whats happening so the Swans/Lions analogies are erroneous.

Whats actually happening is Perth is being forced to 'buy' a defunct Sydney brand.

So because it’s not exactly 100 percent the same as the lions / swans then it’s totally the opposite lol

As I said neither had a leagues club to put in money and fund juniors

Indeed in the lions case they replaced the identity of the local Brisbane side (ironically the bears) to be replaced by the identity of a failed melb side
