Leaving the anomaly of Storm's introduction aside every expansion club has struggled on the field in the first couple of years. I am not expecting us to be much different.I'm happy that Perth has a team but I have a lot of questions.
How will they compete? The Dolphins were in a Rugby League heartland, had one of the greatest coaches ever, a pre-existing staff, pre-existing supporters and they still have had their struggles and not been a really competitive side as of yet.
Perth not only are at a significant geographical disadvantage but the rumoured coach is Brad Arthur who is average, they'll struggle to attract actual legitimate key staff members, no support base as of yet, it's a big gamble.
In terms of players, Perth will need marquee players not just for on field success but also marketability, how will they attract them? "Hey Payne Haas want to leave all your friends and family behind to play under Brad Arthur in Perth? We'll pay overs". No way.
For me it's all well and good to have a Perth team but unless you have a way of being competitive on field then it is pointless. Unless I'm really missing something I can't see many players going to Perth, they'll be the team that players with no other options go to instead of Super League.
Hope I'm wrong.
What is more importnat is we get it right off the field from day 1.
Price memberships well, create an amaizng game day experience at HBF park, put the correct investment into marketing and get the pathways set up.
Those are all far more important for first 3 -5 years than if we finish 14th or 11th.
What we cant do is finish bottom for 5 years. We saw how the Forces crowds tanked due to their on field performance for years.
re marquee players, again I'm not expecting us to sign a Hughes or Hass. But up and coming or B grade stars quite possibly. We might get lucky and snag a Galvin or a Ponga but a solid starting squad that can finish around 14th of 18 in yr1 and 12th of 19 in yr2, 10th by yr 3 and challenging for a play off place by yr 5 will do for me.
