I'm happy that Perth has a team but I have a lot of questions.

How will they compete? The Dolphins were in a Rugby League heartland, had one of the greatest coaches ever, a pre-existing staff, pre-existing supporters and they still have had their struggles and not been a really competitive side as of yet.

Perth not only are at a significant geographical disadvantage but the rumoured coach is Brad Arthur who is average, they'll struggle to attract actual legitimate key staff members, no support base as of yet, it's a big gamble.

In terms of players, Perth will need marquee players not just for on field success but also marketability, how will they attract them? "Hey Payne Haas want to leave all your friends and family behind to play under Brad Arthur in Perth? We'll pay overs". No way.

For me it's all well and good to have a Perth team but unless you have a way of being competitive on field then it is pointless. Unless I'm really missing something I can't see many players going to Perth, they'll be the team that players with no other options go to instead of Super League.

Hope I'm wrong.
Leaving the anomaly of Storm's introduction aside every expansion club has struggled on the field in the first couple of years. I am not expecting us to be much different.
What is more importnat is we get it right off the field from day 1.
Price memberships well, create an amaizng game day experience at HBF park, put the correct investment into marketing and get the pathways set up.
Those are all far more important for first 3 -5 years than if we finish 14th or 11th.
What we cant do is finish bottom for 5 years. We saw how the Forces crowds tanked due to their on field performance for years.

re marquee players, again I'm not expecting us to sign a Hughes or Hass. But up and coming or B grade stars quite possibly. We might get lucky and snag a Galvin or a Ponga but a solid starting squad that can finish around 14th of 18 in yr1 and 12th of 19 in yr2, 10th by yr 3 and challenging for a play off place by yr 5 will do for me.

Funny thing is when the analysis is released and it reveals what everyone already knows, having a major sporting franchise in your city is a financial boon, there will be egg all over these silly buggers faces.
Yeh they'll announce some ridiculous figure at launch event like this will be worth $400mill over the first ten years or some such nonsense. Be interesting to see what the $25mill event money is going to buy and how theyll merge that into the figures overall.

In terms of signings they will need 2 or 3 marketable players for sure. A good mix of recruits would be a gun player that commands a lot of attention, someone with a larrikin personality that is good with media, and maybe a rugby international or two that would attract interest from the rugby crowd (like the South African picks people have mentioned)

the rest of the squad should be a mix of promising juniors and some experienced old heads

Are we expecting an announcement sometime next week after Magic round? Like mid week?
yep. Election and MW out of way and start the build up to Origin and Dolphins game in Perth. You'd have to be thinking next week or week after would be the windows.
I did get a text at the weekend saying it was going to be next week after election and Vlad is likely flying over, but given the track record of in and out of this thing I'm way beyond believing anyone these days lol

You think Perth is tough, what about PNG?

The reality is that Sydney people disappear a bit up there own arse about how great their city is.

If no-one wants to live outside of Bondi, then the whole sport is f**ked.

In the real world though that's not that big a problem.

Greek plus accountant

Means worlds biggest tight ass

I was mates with one for 30 years lol
I thought the Scots were the winners.
Although had a mate who tends to discretely leave early on occasions before his shout. And he is as Aussie as a wombat's droppings.

James Brayshaw on 100 percent footy is a bears fan

Gus wasn’t overly positive on how they can attract players

The panel joked they should sign him up as club chairman

Chammas says the bears wanna target haas

Gus usually looks at the negatives. Drinking from same the same glass as FitzSimons.

ah the good old days lol. Used to have to go to the pub to watch a game live on Impaja!
Imparja was a god-send at times. I managed to get it installed at home, and so long as you didn't mind all the ads being about cattle auctions or public announcements not to sleep on roads (seriously), it was awesome for someone living in WA. I still have my box and the dish is still up on my roof, but it wouldn't work these days. Thankfully 9/Gem have come to the NRL party..!

Have you ever read Tasmania's reports into the economic benefits of having an AFL team and the Mac Point stadium? To say that they were optimistic is an understatement. Their stadium report predicted that Mac Point would host a ridiculous amount of events a year, it was something similar to half a dozen rugby, soccer, and NRL events each annually...

I guarantee that WA's "analysis" of letting the Bear leech off them will be the same, and can you really expect any less when they're effectively doing a report into themselves?

Of course their own report will justify their own expenditure. It's like the police doing an investigation into themselves and finding themselves innocent.

PNG will also struggle to attract players but the whole tax free thing will help them significantly because if you're a million dollar player do you take 650-700k after tax to stay in Brisbane/Melbourne/Sydney or do you go to PNG for a million or more tax free? Easy decision for young top tier players that may be more financially motivated PLUS the Papua New Guinea side will have PNG heritage players that will be motivated to play for/be staff for PNG and represent PNG, Xavier Coates is a high profile example of this.

With Perth, I'm not saying Perth wouldn't be a great place to live because it would be but if you're a NSW based player it's pretty far away to move is all I'm saying. We have seen in the past that marquee players do not want to go to the smaller market teams which is why teams like the Cowboys, Knights, Raiders and Titans aren't hugely competitive when it comes to recruiting players (Especially high end ones). Most players seem to want to live in either Brisbane, Melbourne or Sydney which is why teams from those places do so well recruitment wise.

Western Bears: NRL announcement set to come as early as next week, forcing Labor’s hand on cost

Roger Cook could be forced to come clean with West Australians on the true cost and value of a local NRL side as early as next week, with a deal due to be announced after sign off by club bosses this weekend.
The West Australian understands NRL club chief executives will meet on Friday in Brisbane to formally agree to resurrect the North Sydney Bears and base the side in Perth.
Following the meeting — which will be held amid Magic Round in Queensland this weekend, where all clubs are due to play — an announcement is set to be made as early as next week in partnership with the State Government.
Such an event would force the Premier to disclose WA’s final offer and the economic modelling which underpinned the agreement, as he has vowed to release the details upon the acceptance of the deal.
“We’ve done our own analysis and, if the NRL responds positively to our proposal, we’ll provide all that information to you all,” he said on Monday.
“The moment we have an agreed proposal, if one comes about, we’ll be completely transparent about not only the details of that proposal, but with evidence and modelling.

The North Sydney Bears are expected to move west. No
“We make agreements and we form partnerships with companies, with entities, with organisations, which boost the WA economy and make Western Australia a great place to live. And we’ll be held accountable for that in the normal way.”
An announcement would end a brutal, near-year-long negotiation from Mr Cook, an avid rugby league fan, with the Sydney-based League, after regular updates as part of the discussions were leaked to east coast media.
During the election campaign, Mr Cook was blindsided by claims the League was demanding as much as $320 million from taxpayers, including renovations to HBF Park, forcing him to rule out any money going east as part a deal.
Talks collapsed late last month after the Premier accused the League of treating the State like a “cash cow.” Instead, the Government’s first public offer included $35 million for growing the support in WA, through schools and the Clontarf Foundation, and a centre for excellence for league in Malaga.
Premier Roger Cook won’t reveal economic benefit of Bears bid until after deal is signed
As recently as last week, further details emerged the Australian Rugby League Commission had signed off a revised $50 million bid from WA — which is understood to be more funding for growing the sport.
The announcement comes ahead of the second State of Origin match set to be played at Optus Stadium in June and a regular season match between the Wayne Bennett-coached Dolphins and the Newcastle Knights.
Asked on Tuesday if plans were underway to hold an announcement next week, a State Government spokeswoman said: “If any agreement is reached, the State Government will be transparent about the details, as has been repeatedly stated,” she said.
“If any events are planned, you will of course be invited.”
The NRL was contacted for comment.
WA Government says no NRL deal yet but North Sydney Bears legend Billy Moore says it’s going ahead
