Still not happy to see Al Baxter there. He does ok at Super 14 level, but he simply cannot match it at international level. Still, not sure who else we would put there. Would like to see Robinson get a go, but at least he's on the bench.

Baxter CANNOT be starting prop at the world cup.

I would have actually gone Stainforth hes been going real well in the centres, our best player in the Ireland A game playing at 12. Should have given that a try for mind.

Ireland post record win over Wallabies

Ireland scored a record-breaking 21-6 victory over Australia at a wet and windy Lansdowne Road in Dublin overnight, their biggest winning margin in a home Test against the Wallabies.

Apart from the opening 10 minutes when Australia took a 3-0 lead with a penalty from captain Stirling Mortlock, the home side dominated the first half, using their possession to repeatedly test the visitors' disciplined defence.

Fly half Ronan O'Gara made the scores even 17 minutes in with a penalty before wing Denis Hickie took the first try of the match 10 minutes later.

Full-back Geordan Murphy followed that with another try in the closing minutes of the half, having earlier been denied when he touched down just short of the line at the end of 21 phases of play in which the Irish laid siege to the Australian defence.

A conversion from O'Gara gave Ireland a well-deserved 15-3 lead going into the break.

Again it was left to Australia to open the scoring after the interval with a penalty from centre Mortlock but Ireland quickly restored their half-time lead with another penalty from O'Gara.

The fly half then took his personal tally to 11 points when he extended that lead to 21-6 with another penalty mid-way through a tryless second half where driving rain seemed to sap the energy of both sides.

Tempers frayed at one stage with South African referee Marius Jonker handing out yellow cards to Ireland's Denis Leamy and Australia's Mat Rogers and Phil Waugh but the visitors failed to take advantage of a more scrappy second half.

Despite a lacklustre final 20 minutes from the Irish, the home side still retained much of the possession and Australia never seemed to pose a serious threat.

The victory surpassed Ireland's previous highest margin of victory at home to Australia of 18-9 in 2002.

The 15-point margin also equalled Ireland's biggest margin of victory home or away against Australia, matching the 27-12 win Ireland chalked up in Brisbane in 1979.

There were very few good points to take from that game.

But I guess the big one is that Benn Robinson's input into the scrum seemed to make it 100% more solid. That and we played dismally, and Ireland appeared to play pretty f*cking well and we didn't get beaten by more.

Moore made a difference to, clearly the best hooker we've got. Baxter please go already.

moore's throwing was impressive, albeit a few got pushed offline by the wind. he's a far better thrower than the water polo player.

how did australia form a rolling maul that went forward? i never seen that before. and how did the scrum turn the irish one 90 degrees on one occasion? i havent seen that before either. other than that and the first three minutes of the match, the wallabies were shocking.

GET RID OF ROGERS ALREADY YOU IDIOTS!

Our rolling maul has actually been a strong point this season. Sadly everything else has fallen apart. Rogers has clearly shown hes a bench utility at best.

Pretty sure both of these things happened soon after Robinson came onto the field. It was almost uplifting when the Aussies pushed the Irish off their scrum and turned it 90 degrees - then the Aussie scrum started cheering and sh*t as if they'd won the game and you realised how low our standards have become.

He came on very late in the game. Can't remember him having much impact, but noone in the Aussie backline did to be honest. And by that point I was getting very drowsy anyway.

the tuquiri/mortlock pairing sucks major ass. lote cant pass, and that one cut out pass he did try was to al baxter, who's more hopeless in general play than at scrummaging.

staniforth maybe is the answer, because he's fast, experienced and isnt a biff 'n barge midfielder. i think what the wallabies are lacking in is direction on the field. they seem to be heading towards no specific aim. i think gregan is an awful halfback and isnt worth his place in the team, but someone needs to step up and kick a few arses on the field. maybe mortlock is too nice to get offside with his team mates.

Exactly right. What Australia gains by having Gits at half is faster delivery to the backs, but what they lose is leadership - and considering Gits is also still an excellent 12, I think that's where he should play in the WC. Gregan at 9.

Gregan has has a ton of time to sharpen his leadership skills, where as Giteau has had two games.

I'd persevere with him till the end of the tour at least to see what he can do.

We certainly cant go any worse than we did while Gregan was there.

Mortlock was good leader for the Brumbies, thought it would have carried through to the Wallabies.
