Was Walters really better than Elias?

Was Lewis really better than Kenny?

Do not underestimate the power of the Queensland hysteria/hype/delusion/propaganda machine.

It even managed to convince people that Wally is worthy of Immortal status. Hero worship is hell of a thing.

I preferred Lyons over Kenny, purely personal.

Though Kenny was a great centre, and was fortunate enough to be running outside Lewis for Australia.

Elias for mine. Elias was robbed. Wasn't given an Australian jersey after he dominated origin, the year he bled and his mother embraced him after an origin win. Selectors said something along the lines of Elias getting on and looking at younger players.

The following year I think the axe makes his debut for Australia at 32 years of age.

Typical BS from selectors and hardly surprising.

Pretty sure Elias was the starting hooker in the second test at Old Trafford (1990) and almost f**ked it up because he was a massive hog. Even got in a fight with Tigers team mate Hanley and kicked him in the head.

Elias was and older style hooker and very much a "look at me" type of player.
Walters was a team player and had a much better team around him.

On and off the field Steve Walters was much better than Elias.

Too young to comment. I do wonder how many in a similar position are nonetheless claiming Walters was better than Elias. It seems to have become accepted narrative that Elias wasn't anything particularly special and Walters was an all time great.

I do wonder if the gulf was as large as people are suggesting. It doesn't fit with Elias' winning SOO man of the match on 3 occasions against Steve Walters.

I remember the older rakes such as Freddy Jones for Manly,Elwyn Waters for Souths,Easts and Manly,George Piggins and Mario Fenech for Souths,Royce Simmonds and the great Mick Stevenson for Penrith,Johnny Gray for North Sydney,John McMartin for the Eels and Sharkies.

These players played during the old rule were a hooker had the loose feed and had to actually rake for the ball.

Walters was a once in a generation hooker (like C Smith) and Elias was on par with Fenech IMO.

Truthfully, I am too young to give an answer to who was better.

But from everything I've heard, it seems to be a parallel of Smith & Farah,

Elias on a par with Fenech??????? You f**king idiot!!!!!!

You are suggesting Elias was better than Walters. Not much difference to Elias v Mario.

Guys like Kerrod and Mario weren't better than Elias imo but they were very good nonetheless. Elias was very good but Walters was better.

So many overrated Queenslanders over the years. Walters, Langer, 1 touch per game Renouf.

Elias revolutionised the hooking role. Walters was a decent defender, had no kicking game, no creativity but was lucky enough to find himself in a team with champions like Daley and Stuart to do all the work while Walters stood around looking confused. His brother Kerrod was better as, unlike Steve, he had some instinct for the game and some pace from dummy half.

A better contest would be S. Walters vs when Sean Rudder played dummy half.

Hate Queensland, but I was sure Steve Walters was the best hooker of all time, then Smith came along... still think it might be Walters though.

If modern day hookers had to play against Piggins they'd have to practice concussion testing
